The group that had come searching quickly ran to the edge of the deep pit. Xiao Guohua, leading them, jumped straight into the pit.
“Regiment Commander. We…”
“We’ll talk back at base,” Qi Jun cut him off.
Several soldiers helped Qi Jun out of the pit, and Lin Yiqiao was also pulled out by someone.
Qi Jun glanced back at Lin Yiqiao. “She’s coming back to Beidu with me.”
Xiao Guohua’s gaze shifted between the two with some surprise, but Lin Yiqiao paid him no mind. Hearing Qi Jun’s words, she immediately jogged to catch up.
At the foot of the mountain, a line of jeeps crowded the narrow path, looking somewhat out of place.
Several people in white coats quickly approached with a stretcher as soon as they saw Qi Jun, then worked together to lift the man onto a tightly sealed transport vehicle.
Lin Yiqiao followed them aboard. She really was seeing something new—like a small knife opening her eyes from an unexpected angle.
She had ridden in a transport vehicle on the way here too. She remembered that the back of that truck didn’t even have a place to sit; the soldiers had all sat directly on the floor.
But this vehicle was fully equipped with many instruments and could even perform surgery.
After starting a blood transfusion for Qi Jun, a group of doctors and nurses began methodically taking his blood pressure, measuring his temperature, and confirming his vital signs.
“Comrade, we need to begin removing the bullet now. Please step down for the moment,” a nurse said to Lin Yiqiao.
“Alright.” Lin Yiqiao felt the nurse’s attitude was a bit odd, but she didn’t bother overthinking it.
She turned to look at Qi Jun and found he was also looking at her.
Lin Yiqiao gave him a smile, made a fist and held it near her face, then jumped off the vehicle without looking back.
Only after getting off did she realize the transport vehicle was already completely surrounded by soldiers armed with rifles. The jeeps were also positioned defensively around it.
Startled, she cautiously stepped out and noticed telephone lines set up near one of the jeeps. Xiao Guohua was standing in front of it, speaking on the phone with a respectful expression.
“Yes, yes… Regiment Commander Qi is still in surgery. The doctors said the bleeding was stopped in time. Please rest assured, there won’t be any problems.”
Lin Yiqiao didn’t dare listen further and moved aside, but she was still caught in Xiao Guohua’s peripheral vision.
After hanging up the phone, he walked over to Lin Yiqiao. “Comrade Lin, you’re quite resourceful.”
Hearing this, Lin Yiqiao felt a spark of anger. What’s his problem?
“What’s wrong? Do you like Qi Jun too?”
Her retort made Xiao Guohua flush with anger. “You…”
Lin Yiqiao thought to herself that this man really hadn’t seen much of the world if he couldn’t handle such a mild jab.
“Don’t make such a fuss over nothing. You’d be better off spending your time investigating this case.”
With that, Lin Yiqiao turned and walked away, her long braid swinging behind her with each step.
Soldiers holding rifles were all around, and the jeeps were full of people too. Lin Yiqiao didn’t dare go near them.
She walked over to a large tree, plucked a blade of foxtail grass, and quickly wove it into a little rabbit.
Xiao Guohua watched her from the side and gave a cold laugh. Lin Yiqiao rolled her eyes and turned her back to him.
Soon, several doctors came down from the transport vehicle.
Lin Yiqiao hurried over and asked, “How did the surgery go?”
Seeing her acting like a family member, Xu Ruyun frowned and was about to speak when she was stopped by a kind-looking female doctor beside her.
“The surgery was very successful. Regiment Commander Qi is in good health and will recover quickly,” the female doctor said.
“Good, thank you all for your hard work,” Lin Yiqiao replied with a bright smile.
After speaking, she jumped into the car, clutching the little rabbit in her hand and pouncing toward Qi Jun, her body carrying a faint dew-like freshness.
The man slowly lifted his eyelids, and what met his eyes was this scene.
Lin Yiqiao leaned by his bedside and softly asked, “Does it hurt?”
Qi Jun shook his head.
“I’ll go back and make chicken soup for you.”
He nodded again.
“But you’ll have to provide me with a chicken.”
“Alright.”
Outside, Xu Ruyun heard everything clearly, but she didn’t have the courage to burst in and make a scene in front of Qi Jun.
“What’s going on with them? How long has it been since Zhao Hui left?”
Tang Fenghua glanced at her. “People can’t always live in the past.”
“But…”
“Enough.” Tang Fenghua’s gaze sharpened. “Xu Ruyun, don’t meddle in things you shouldn’t.”
