The moment Gu Zhenyang saw Ye Baoguo and Huang Qiaoyu, only one thought flashed through his mind—Su Yiyi must have caused trouble again, and they had come to the door to confront her.
“Ah, Zhenyang, you’re at home too? Perfect, perfect!” Ye Baoguo said with a smile.
Hearing this, Gu Zhenyang became even more certain they were here to cause trouble. His expression immediately turned a little unpleasant, but he couldn’t just shut them out.
No matter what it was about, he still had to invite them in and hear the full story. After all, he was still Su Yiyi’s husband. If she really had caused some issue, he would have to help deal with it.
“Sister-in-law, Brother Ye, come in and sit!” Gu Zhenyang said politely. His rank was actually higher than Ye Baoguo’s, but he still addressed him respectfully as “Brother Ye.”
Ye Baoguo and Huang Qiaoyu had no idea that Gu Zhenyang had already misunderstood everything. They were both smiling as they entered, and Huang Qiaoyu even walked straight toward Su Yiyi.
Seeing this, Gu Zhenyang frowned immediately. Without a word, he stepped forward and subtly blocked Su Yiyi behind him, then asked calmly, “Sister-in-law, what brings you here?”
As soon as he saw this protective gesture, Ye Baoguo instantly understood what was going on and couldn’t help but laugh.
“Captain Gu, you’re not thinking I’m here to cause trouble for your wife, are you? You’ve really misunderstood. My wife and I came to thank her. If it weren’t for her help this morning, we really wouldn’t have known what to do.”
Gu Zhenyang froze.
Help?
Wasn’t she asleep at home this morning when he left?
Huang Qiaoyu turned to Su Yiyi and said gratefully, “Sister Su, the medicine you gave this morning worked amazingly well. My Xiaohai’s fever has gone down now and he’s resting at home. Your Brother Ye insisted we come and thank you properly.”
Gu Zhenyang stood there, completely confused.
Su Yiyi smiled lightly. “Sister-in-law, we all live in the same compound. Helping each other is what we should do. If it were me in trouble, I’m sure you wouldn’t stand by either. You really don’t need to take it to heart.”
Only then did Gu Zhenyang finally understand.
So they weren’t here to cause trouble.
He was slightly surprised. After all, in his impression, this woman was someone who constantly created problems. He hadn’t expected her to have such a considerate side.
But… it didn’t really matter to him.
Whether she changed or not, he was still going to divorce her anyway.
A person doesn’t just suddenly become good overnight. Even if she seemed better now, who knew what she would become later?
Ye Baoguo, however, spoke again with a straightforward tone. “Sister, you can’t say that. My wife was at home alone with three children. If it weren’t for your medicine, we would’ve had to rush the kid to the hospital—and that would’ve cost a fortune.”
As he spoke, he directly handed a net bag to Su Yiyi.
Su Yiyi quickly waved her hands. “No, no, this is too much. We’re all military families, it’s not easy earning money. If I accept this, what if I need help from Sister-in-law in the future?”
She refused firmly.
That made both Ye Baoguo and Huang Qiaoyu pause awkwardly.
In their memory, Su Yiyi wasn’t someone like this. She was known for not letting herself suffer any loss. And she had already given medicine this morning, which wasn’t cheap in this era.
But now she was refusing gifts so decisively—it left them unsure how to react.
Gu Zhenyang, standing aside, said nothing. He just observed quietly.
This woman really seemed… different.
After a moment of hesitation, Su Yiyi finally sighed. Seeing they weren’t leaving unless she accepted something, she picked out a slightly wilted apple from the bag.
“This is enough. Take the rest back. The child just recovered and needs nutrition. I can’t take food meant for a sick child.”
Her tone was firm.
Huang Qiaoyu immediately smiled.
She genuinely wanted to give it, and Su Yiyi genuinely refused. That sincerity made her like Su Yiyi even more.
“Alright then, I won’t say more. If you ever need anything in the future, just call for me. As long as I can help, I won’t refuse.”
“Alright. Thank you in advance, sister.”
After a bit more conversation, Ye Baoguo and Huang Qiaoyu left.
Once they were gone, Su Yiyi turned around and immediately met Gu Zhenyang’s probing gaze. Her heart skipped slightly.
Why was he looking at her like that?
“Why aren’t you going back to the unit?” she asked.
“I’m leaving,” he replied, snapping out of his thoughts. He picked up his coat and walked out.
Su Yiyi watched his back and instinctively shivered.
Was this guy not cold at all? Carrying his coat instead of wearing it in this weather?
She quickly shut the courtyard door and went back inside where it was warm.
On the way back to the unit, Gu Zhenyang kept thinking about what had just happened.
He wasn’t thinking of her differently in a romantic sense, nor had his intention to divorce changed.
He just felt… something was off.
She used to be like a firecracker—exploding at every word, whether talking to him or even her own family.
But after waking up from that illness, she had changed.
Polite. Calm. Even thoughtful.
It was as if she had become a completely different person.
How could someone change so drastically overnight?
Or… had she finally regretted everything and decided to live properly now?
