Volume 1: Enrollment at Magias Academy of Magical Arts
Chapter 12: Walker Saw Something Lewd and Got a Nosebleed
Someone who always worked hard.
That was Filiestra Addison’s image of Brendan Walker.
Despite saying he wasn’t accustomed to it, he organized everyone as representative, completed Professor Blanchard’s requests, and shut himself inside his research room immediately after class.
He was still there whenever Filiestra left, and already there when she arrived the following morning.
She worried about when he slept, but had never seen him doze off during class.
They weren’t close, but their relationship wasn’t bad.
They occasionally spoke during confirmation work.
They didn’t speak outside school.
That was her relationship with Brendan.
Then, yesterday, he suddenly proposed a joint research project.
His reason made sense, and Filiestra was interested too, so she agreed.
Apparently, he would prepare a magic sword for her by the end of today’s classes.
He seemed to be forging it even now, because he wasn’t in the classroom.
According to Professor Blanchard, he’d been marked absent due to illness.
“I wonder if Bren feels unwell.”
Amae, Filiestra’s friend, murmured between lessons.
Gary Rock immediately denied it.
“No. He was in his research room today.”
“Huh. Maybe he’s sleeping, then.”
Amae’s indifferent reply came through a yawn.
Watching her, Filiestra had an idea.
If she knew little about Brendan Walker, she could simply ask someone close to him.
“Amae?”
“What?”
“What kind of person is Walker?”
“What? Why?”
“You speak with him often, so I thought you might know him well.”
“……………Wait. Is that what this is?”
“What?”
She hadn’t phrased that very well.
Filiestra hurriedly shook her head and properly explained.
“No, um, I’m helping with Walker’s research soon. I’ve hardly spoken with him before.”
“Huh.”
“You seem close to him.”
“Do I?”
“Yes.”
For some reason, the sleepiness vanished from Amae’s eyes only then.
“…Bren is strangely clueless sometimes, so I just teach him things.”
Amae fell silent.
After a short pause, she slowly spoke again.
“About Bren…”
“Yes?”
“He gets nosebleeds when he’s thinking lewd thoughts, so be careful.”
A question mark seemed to float above Filiestra’s head.
She couldn’t understand the statement.
“When his nose is bleeding, it means he’s thinking about something lewd. Be careful. He did it to me once.”
“What? What?”
“That’s about his most distinctive trait, I suppose.”
“What…?”
“Oh, and Bren eats the vegetables I dislike.”
What should I do?
None of this makes sense.
“Lady Amae! Lady Fily! Our next lecture is outdoors!”
“Let’s go too.”
At Luluk’s call, Amae rose from her seat.
Filiestra remained behind, unable to make sense of what she’d just heard.
“What kind of person is Walker…?”
She whispered in the empty classroom, but only the gentle breeze answered.
◇
After class.
Their meeting place wasn’t an official training ground, but behind an old, unused warehouse.
When Filiestra arrived, the magic sword truly was complete.
“It’s finished, Filiestra.”
Brendan wore a smile Filiestra had never seen in class.
A pure-white, single-edged sword rested in his right hand.
Its texture resembled ceramic, and its blade had a shape similar to the scalpels Filiestra often used.
It was a perfectly immaculate blade without a single blemish.
Though the fine details remained unfinished, it possessed the presence of a work of art.
“It’s beautiful… Is this mine?”
“Yes. Filiestra Number One.”
“About the name… Yes. We’ll think of one together later.”
In any case, their objective was to analyze why Filiestra could use Brendan’s magic sword.
If they investigated the conditions Brendan and Filiestra shared, they might discover something new.
“Then let’s begin—Ah!?”
The instant Filiestra reached for the hilt, an electric sensation and a chill ran through her entire body.
This felt completely different from yesterday’s flaming magic sword.
The deeply unpleasant sensation resembled the blade unilaterally connecting its nerves to those in her hand.
Goose bumps rose across Filiestra’s skin.
“Wh-What is this? What’s happening?”
“I made this one specifically for you.
“The weight, length, and grip shape should all fit your hand better than the last sword.
“I’m glad it seems to have accepted you without trouble.”
The ease with which Brendan said that frightened her.
The completely unknown sensation frightened her.
It was honestly repulsive.
Yet an inexplicable pleasure existing in contradiction to that disgust drew Filiestra in without her realizing it.
“Could you cut that? I’ll observe the mutual reaction while you use it.”
A training target had been prepared.
It was an expensive model whose hardness and toughness could be freely adjusted, from the texture of flesh to armor.
“I set it to roughly the hardness of stone. Cut it lightly.”
Stone.
Even with Filiestra’s magical coefficient far above average, she couldn’t destroy something that hard without considerable effort.
She was uneasy, but followed his instruction and swung the sword vertically.
The blade smoothly entered from the top and slid through to the middle.
A mysterious shiver swept over Filiestra.
Before she knew it, sweat had dampened her skin.
Was this truly a sword?
It felt as though it had been part of her body from the beginning—
“Just as I thought. It’s functioning perfectly. Next—”
Drip.
As Brendan prepared to continue, something cold touched her skin.
Rain.
Before she even fully recognized it, a curtain of water enveloped the clearing.
“We should go back for now.”
“Y-Yes. With rain like this…”
Filiestra had also wanted to interrupt the experiment, so the timing was fortunate.
The magic sword’s sensation was too unfamiliar, leaving her body confused.
She needed time to organize the information.
◇
The passing shower was stronger than expected.
By the time they returned to Brendan’s research room, both were fairly wet.
Isn’t my outer clothing a little transparent…?
In reality, Filiestra’s concern was unfounded.
Only the white shirt beneath her robe had grown slightly damp.
But the situation made her sensitive.
“He gets nosebleeds when he’s thinking lewd thoughts, so be careful.”
Amae had said that, but it couldn’t have been less scientific.
A nosebleed ordinarily occurred when the small blood vessels in the nasal membrane were damaged by dryness, irritation, trauma, or similar causes.
“When his nose is bleeding, it means he’s thinking about something lewd. Be careful.”
Naturally, there were no cases in which sexual excitement ruptured the blood vessels of the nasal membrane, nor was there any recognized correlation.
The most reasonable conclusion was that her classmate had misunderstood something.
As a doctor and friend, Filiestra should correct Amae’s misconception.
“Bren is lewd, so be careful.”
Whether Brendan personally possessed such tendencies was another matter.
She hadn’t considered it until now, but a boy and girl were alone in a closed room.
The front of her clothing wasn’t especially wet.
Her back, however, worried her slightly.
“Bren is the Great Demon Lord of Lewdness, so be careful.”
Amae hadn’t said anything of the sort, but Filiestra unconsciously pulled her shoulders inward, straightened her posture, and grew more vigilant.
Meanwhile, Brendan searched for something they could use to dry themselves.
He couldn’t leave the kind person helping him soaked.
Smithing was a battle against heat.
He always kept cloth available for wiping his body.
He reached for a new cloth stored deep within a shelf.
The moment he extended his hand, a metal ruler leaning nearby fell and struck the bridge of his nose.
“Ow…”
It hit fairly hard, but the pain wasn’t unbearable.
He took towels for Filiestra and himself, then pulled his face out from behind the shelf.
“Filiestra, I have a towel. Use this.”
“What? Oh, thank—”
She looked over her shoulder toward Brendan.
Blood streamed from his nose.
“Hhk…”
She inhaled sharply.
Could sexual excitement truly have raised his blood pressure until his nasal membrane failed?
But that was impossible.
“Th-Thank you…”
She accepted the towel with a stiff smile.
The atmosphere didn’t allow her to say, “Your nose is bleeding. Are you all right?”
Brendan himself looked as though he had no idea anything was happening.
But if it’s true, he can’t help it… It’s a physiological reaction…
She calmly analyzed the situation while drying her head.
It wasn’t actually a physiological reaction, but in any case, this incident was beyond his control.
Filiestra decided not to make much of it.
If it happened repeatedly, she could warn him as a classmate.
The rain never stopped that day, so they ended the session.
Brendan’s nosebleed stopped at some point.
◇
The next day.
“Good morning, Fily. How was it?”
“Walker saw something lewd and got a nosebleed.”
“See?”
