Volume 1 Сhарtеr 18: Just Нugging Like That?
Frоm thе moment shе saw Fu Huаiхu’s еуеs сovеrеd with whitе gauzе, Jiang Хining’s eyеs bеgan tо reddеn.
“Хingхing…”
“Why is Jiаоjiaо hеrе?”
Fu Нuаiхu unсonsсiouslу rеached out, turning tоward Jiаng Xining’s dirесtiоn with а gentle smilе.
Jiang Xining’s dееr-likе еyеs werе filled with worrу. Withоut аnоthеr thought, shе hurried forward аnd tооk Fu Нuаixu’s hand. “Xingхing…”
Wеn Мingzhu, who wаs follоwing behind, pаusеd. Wаsn’t Jiаojiaо’s аction а bit too nаturаl?
Тhе small hаnd in his рalm was soft, cool, and trеmbling slightly. Еvеn thоugh Fu Нuаixu wаs half-wrapрed likе a mummу, he сould still sense her worry and fear through the gauze.
“Don’t be afraid, Jiaojiao. I’m fine.”
Jiang Xining didn’t believe him. Her clear eyes welled up with tears, her tone unusually anxious.
“Doctor, what’s wrong with Xingxing’s eyes?”
The young man in the white coat, though with thick hair, had a name tag that read: HPCAT Hospital Ophthalmology Center – Chief Physician – Qi Yun, which was enough to prove his credentials.
He tucked his pen into his pocket and spoke seriously, “Overworked. There’s a risk of blindness recurring. He must be hospitalized for observation these few days.”
“If he continues burying himself in work like this every day, he might as well say goodbye to these eyes.”
Although Qi Yun’s words were somewhat exaggerated, they weren’t entirely false.
Fu Huaixu’s eyes did have some underlying issues. The nerves in his brain were complex, and the location of the hematoma was tricky. A craniotomy would have been the safer option.
But this guy cared too much about his appearance and absolutely refused a craniotomy, saying he was afraid of becoming ugly and being disliked by the one he loved…
In the end, they could only opt for minimally invasive surgery, which only partially resolved the issue.
The key problem was that this madman had been working himself to death abroad, staying up late every single day. Even the best condition would deteriorate. He’d been told to come for a check-up long ago, but he never took it seriously.
And now, just to let the one he loved get some fresh air, he finally came.
It seems a brother’s words are no match for a wife’s.
After scaring Jiang Xining with a few stern words, Qi Yun’s tone softened considerably.
“Family members, please rest assured. As long as the patient strictly follows medical advice, he can be discharged in a few days.”
Only then did Jiang Xining let out a sigh of relief. It was good that Xingxing was okay.
Qi Yun truly lived up to being a good brother in China, adept at creating opportunities for his friend to be alone with his loved one. After finishing his doctor’s act, he turned to Wen Mingzhu, who was idly picking at her nails. “There are still some fees that need to be paid. Could you, as a family member, come with me to take care of it?”
Wen Mingzhu pointed at herself. “Me?”
Since when had she become a family member?
Jiang Xining quickly rummaged through her bag and pulled out a bank card. “Zhuzhu, there’s money in here. Could you go for me?”
“Alright, alright.” Wen Mingzhu couldn’t stand her pleading and reluctantly agreed to run the errand.
Besides, she wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving her alone anyway.
After everyone left, only Jiang Xining and Fu Huaixu remained in the hospital room.
Jiang Xining was a little angry. “Xingxing, you didn’t listen!”
“Hmm?” Fu Huaixu’s voice was clear and pleasant, tinged with a smile. “Where did I not listen?”
“Last time, you promised to let me accompany you to the hospital. Your eyes are acting up again, and you didn’t even tell me.” Jiang Xining huffed, though she wasn’t truly angry with him.
Fu Huaixu let out a soft sigh.
Jiang Xining immediately grew nervous. “What’s wrong? Does your eye hurt?”She reached out to touch his eyes but was afraid of hurting him, anxiously fidgeting like a little ant on a hot pan.
“I sent messages to Jiaojiao, but you ignored me. I thought I had upset you somehow…” Even through the white bandage, Fu Huaixu’s expression appeared somber, carrying an indescribable fragility and loneliness. “I didn’t dare come find you again, afraid you’d find me troublesome.”
“I didn’t want to become that useless person from back then. When I lost my sight, my temper was terrible, and I wasn’t good to Jiaojiao either…”
“No, that’s not it!”
Jiang Xining hurriedly interrupted him, frantically pulling out her phone. Sure enough, she saw many unread messages with red notifications—she hadn’t replied to a single one.
“I’m sorry, Xingxing, I didn’t mean to.”
Jiang Xining was filled with regret and guilt, looking up anxiously. “I’ve been a bit down these past couple of days and didn’t check my phone… I didn’t ignore you on purpose.”
In the past, she was always the one who initiated messages with Dou Dou; he rarely reached out to her.
She had forgotten about Xingxing… Xingxing was always the best to her, never ignoring her like Dou Dou did because of work.
He must have been really upset when she didn’t reply.
Jiang Xining braced herself for his anger, but Fu Huaixu simply took her hand and sat her down by the hospital bed. He felt his way to the top of her head and gently patted it, just like before.
“Why is Jiaojiao unhappy?”
Jiang Xining immediately pouted, her brows furrowing tightly. “I don’t know…”
Fu Huaixu asked, “Did Jinghao upset you again?”
Jiang Xining nodded, then shook her head.
Dou Dou had lied to her. He hadn’t cut ties with those people at all and had even gone golfing with them.
She had told him before that she didn’t like his friends at all, yet he still lied to her!
The girl’s bright little face scrunched up like a confused kitten tangled in yarn, caught in a whirl of conflicting thoughts. Fu Huaixu wasn’t blind and took it all in.
Jiaojiao had always blindly trusted him since childhood. If he said a few bad words, she would truly believe them.
Gradually, she would start to think Fu Jinghao wasn’t so great after all, but…
Fu Huaixu simply ruffled Jiang Xining’s hair. “Jinghao will take over the Fu family in the future. Father has always been strict with him since he was young. Besides me and Jiaojiao, many people will flock to him for their own interests, pretending to be his friends…”
Although Jiang Xining didn’t fully understand, she still listened attentively, perking up her ears.
“Those people are just chasing after him, but they aren’t sincere. They’re the ones at fault, deceiving Jinghao. When he realizes it, he’ll come apologize to Jiaojiao.”
After hearing Fu Huaixu’s words, Jiang Xining was stunned. “…Really?”
“Yes.” Even in his hospital gown with his eyes covered, Fu Huaixu’s calm and composed demeanor remained unchanged. “He will.”
He had given him a chance. If he couldn’t seize it, he had no one else to blame.
“Xingxing, you’re so good!”
Jiang Xining’s gloom vanished in an instant, and she suddenly hugged Fu Huaixu with joy.
Just like when she was little and her legs were sore, too lazy to walk—she always asked Xingxing to carry her.
The warm, soft scent filled his senses, something Fu Huaixu had yearned for and longed for over the years.
In a place Jiang Xining couldn’t see, Fu Huaixu’s dark eyes were completely shadowed, his brows and eyes tinged with a deep, unfathomable obsession and madness.
If it weren’t for Jiaojiao, his life would have been lost abroad—what was the point of saving it?Fu Huaixu didn’t speak. Jiang Xining nervously tried to pull away, but he only held her tighter, as if wanting to meld her into his very bones.
“Xingxing, did I hurt you…”
“No.” His clear voice had turned hoarse, restrained and controlled, revealing Fu Huaixu’s vulnerability. “These next two days, could Jiaojiao stay with me?”
“I’m a little afraid of being alone…”
Xingxing couldn’t see, and with no one by his side, he was all alone.
Just thinking about it made Jiang Xining’s heart ache. She gently patted his back and quickly comforted him, “Don’t be afraid, Xingxing. I’ll take care of you.”
Inside, the atmosphere was thick and tender. Outside, Wen Mingzhu, having just paid the bill, hummed a tune as she walked to the hospital room door. When she saw their position, she immediately slammed on the brakes.
Her eyes widened in shock.
She rubbed her eyes—it wasn’t an illusion. How long had she been gone, and they were already hugging like this?
Hiss… Could it be that Fu Jinghao’s uncle… liked Jiaojiao?
Not sure, better keep watching.
