June 2026 The atmosphere in the global broadcasting studio was full of melancholy.
The 2026 World Cup was days away from starting, capturing the hearts and minds of billions around the globe.
Yet, amidst the fervent tactical analysis and the highlight reels of spectacular goals, breaking news had brought the panel of seasoned pundits to a dead silence.
He adjusted his earpiece, his expression solemn but laced with the admiration reserved only for the legends of the beautiful game.
“Breaking news just reaching us,” the Reporter declared, “Vitinho, the legendary, forty-one-year-old midfielder, former Ballon d’Or winner who has accomplished everything possible, has declared that the 2026 World Cup will be his last dance.
He is going to retire at the end of the tournament, drawing the curtain on what is arguably not just the best midfielder ever but arguably the best player ever.” But to understand the weight of a forty-one-year-old legend bowing out on the grandest stage, one had to rewind the tape.
Long before the medals, the individual accolades, and the global adoration, he was just an eighteen-year-old kid stepping onto the professional stage.
His full birth name reflected his rich dual heritage: Ricardo Cesar Carvalho Victor Sterling.
Born to a Brazilian mother and an English father.
His mother’s side of the family had bestowed upon him a cascade of names, a nod to his Brazilian roots.
To his family and everyone who knew him personally, he was called Rico.
However, when he officially stepped onto the pitch, the name across the back of his shirt was “Vitinho,” a moniker that would soon become synonymous with midfield mastery.
At just eighteen years of age, Rico was already a physical marvel.
Standing at an imposing six feet three inches.
He was lean and muscular, yet he was not too big; he carried no unnecessary bulk that might hinder his natural agility, fluidity, or graceful movement on the ball.
Beyond his athletic build, Rico possessed striking and jarringly handsome features.
With high cheekbones, piercing eyes, and a flawlessly sharp jawline, he was very attractive.
In fact, he had the aura of a high-fashion supermodel rather than a gritty footballer.
He was an eighteen-year-old specimen.
It was Rico’s very first professional game, and he was starting at CM, which was his preferred position.
He didn’t just enjoy playing in the centre of the pitch; he loved it.
He loved pulling the strings, dictating the tempo almost like a puppet master pulling at invisible threads.
He had the vision of a seasoned veteran trapped in the body of a teenager, and today, against the Columbus Crew, the LA Galaxy fans were about to witness the birth of a king.
The game started slowly.
The Columbus Crew came out with physicality, bogging down the midfield and trying to establish an early physical dominance.
Rico started slowly, taking the opening ten minutes to adjust to the game.
He jogged purposefully, making conservative passes, allowing the opposition to think he was just a nervous debutant.
Receiving a firm pass out from the LA Galaxy defence.
Rico checked his shoulder, allowing the ball to roll across his body, taking a Columbus Crew midfielder out of the equation.
He accelerated into the created space, dribbled past another Columbus Crew player with a drop of his shoulder, and scanned the final third.
Without breaking stride, he played a precise through ball behind the Columbus back line, directly into the path of Carlos Ruiz.
Ruiz found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but scuffed the shot, dragging it wide of the post.
The crowd groaned, but then erupted into applause for the spectacular build-up.
Minutes later, the Columbus Crew launched a counter-attack down the right flank, forcing a deflection that earned them a corner.
The ball was whipped into the crowded penalty area, swerving toward the penalty spot.
Rising like a salmon above a sea of bodies, Rico headed it, sending the ball out of the danger zone.
Undeterred, the Columbus Crew midfield collected the clearance and immediately tried to loft the ball right back into the LA Galaxy box.
Rico was positioned perfectly.
He tracked the trajectory of the falling ball, stepped in front of his marker, and gracefully took it down on his chest.
As the ball dropped to his feet, he executed a one-two with a nearby teammate, getting the ball straight back in his stride as he ran out of the defensive third.
Suddenly, the Columbus Crew realised the danger the young debutant posed as he got hounded by three separate Columbus players converging on him from different angles.
They pulled at his shirt, kicked at his shins, and threw their weight against him, but Rico absorbed the contact.
He carried it until he was finally brought down with a clip to his ankles.
The referee blew his whistle loudly, awarding him a free kick in the center circle.
Displaying the quiet arrogance of a maestro, Rico didn’t even wait for the opposition to retreat.
Rico played it back to Lalas, instantly demanding it back.
Upon getting it back, Rico kept passing it around the midfield, orchestrating a dizzying carousel of passes.
He kept getting it back, acting as the pivot of the LA Galaxy team.
The Columbus players were forced to chase shadows, growing frustrated by the eighteen-year-old who was making them look like amateurs.
Spotting a sudden gap in the Columbus defence, Rico finally played a pass to Carlos Ruiz near the edge of the final third.
As Rico sprinted to receive the return pass and burst into the box, a burly Columbus Crew defender recognized stepped directly across his path, blocking the run before Rico could get the ball.
In the collision, an elbow was thrown, and Rico got hit flush in the face.
But Rico stayed on his feet.
He stopped, wiped his jaw, and locked onto the defender with a cold, terrifying intensity.
The referee aggressively blew his whistle, sprinting over to award the LA Galaxy a free kick from twenty-five yards out.
Rico didn’t look at the bench for instructions.
He walked over to the ball, took control, and set it down.
He took four deliberate steps backward, his eyes fixed dead on the top right corner of the net.
The referee blew his whistle.
Rico stepped up and leathered it.
A knuckleball that swerved through the night air, soaring over the terrified four-man wall, and slamming right into the top corner of the net, as the goalkeeper hadn’t even moved.
He had made it 1-0 on his debut.
The stadium went into bedlam as Rico stood near the corner flag, a cold expression on his face, soaking in the adulation.
As the second half commenced, the Columbus Crew came out desperate to salvage the game, throwing more bodies forward and increasing the physicality.
But Rico was unrelenting.
Within minutes of the restart, Rico hunted down a Columbus Crew midfielder as he went to carry it forward.
Rico lunged in with a perfectly timed tackle, cleanly winning the ball and immediately springing to his feet.
As he went to transition into an attack, carrying the ball forward, he got kicked from behind by a frustrated Crew defender.
The kick bounced off his leg, momentarily disrupting his stride, but Rico ignored the foul, maintained his footing, and kept carrying it forward with momentum.
Seeing the LA Galaxy winger peeling off his marker, Rico played a outside-of-the-boot through ball straight into the winger’s path.
The winger drove down the touchline and crossed it into the penalty area, but a Columbus defender got his head to it and cleared it away.
The ball looped out toward the edge of the box, falling perfectly out of the sky.
Rico was already there, anticipating the clearance.
He took it down on his chest with a touch softer than silk, as he went to unleash another shot, a Columbus Crew player rushed out frantically to throw his body in the way.
Rico dribbled past him, leaving the rushing defender in the dust as he drove to the byline before he pulled it back for Carlos Ruiz.
Ruiz wound up to bury the shot, but the other Columbus Crew defender got in the way with a desperate block and cleared it out for a corner.
Rico jogged over to the corner flag to take the set piece as Rico raised his left arm, signalling the routine, and whipped an in-swinging cross into the heart of the box.
It fell onto the head of the towering Alex Lalas, who was unmarked.
But Lalas scuffed the header, sending the ball harmlessly over the crossbar into the stands.
Rico threw his hands up in exasperation.
Sensing time slipping away, the Columbus Crew goalkeeper bypassed their midfield, going for a desperate long ball over the top.
Rico got up incredibly well, and won the header against the Columbus striker.
However, the Columbus Crew player won the second ball.
Thinking he had a momentary advantage, the player tried to dribble past Rico but Rico poked it free.
As the ball rolled loose, Rico looked up and saw the Columbus goalkeeper standing far off his line.
Rico didn’t hesitate.
From nearly forty yards out, he went for it.
The stadium held its breath as the ball arced beautifully through the night sky.
The keeper backpedalled frantically, his eyes wide with panic as he scrambled toward his own goal line.
The keeper leapt backwards and poked it over the top of the crossbar with his fingertips.
The crowd gave Rico a standing ovation as he jogged over to take the resulting corner off the other side of the pitch.
He wiped the sweat from his forehead, and delivered another impeccably flighted cross.
This time, the delivery was practically begging to be finished.
Lalas finally got his header on target, burying the ball into the back of the net as he scored to make it 2-0.
The rest of the game was nothing short of a masterclass.
Rico dominated everything in the middle of the park.
He was omnipresent, breaking up opposition attacks, dictating the rhythm with short passes, and frustrating the Columbus players who could not get near him.
Every time they pressed, he pivoted away; every time they sat back, he punished them with penetrating balls.
Though LA Galaxy failed to score another goal in the dying minutes, Rico had made sure that Columbus Crew didn’t even sniff a chance to score.
As the clock ticked into the 89th minute, a Columbus forward finally found a sliver of space on a counter-attack, bearing down on the LA Galaxy defensive line.
Sprinting back with terrifying speed, Rico closed the gap and slide tackle to cleanly strip the forward of possession to seal out the game.
The referee brought the whistle to his lips and blew for full-time.
The stadium erupted in joyous celebration as LA Galaxy won their match 2-0.
Rico had won his first-ever professional game, fundamentally announcing to the world that a new generational talent had arrived.
It was the very first chapter of a story that, twenty-three years later, would culminate in a tearful retirement announcement as a World Cup-winning legend.
The puppet master had begun his show, and the footballing world would never be the same again.
A/N) What did you guys think?
The reason why I didn’t give the MLS players’ names is that I think it fits his narrative of I’m so much better, I don’t belong here, I’m not going to bother learning your names.
There are exceptions like Lalas for being an idiot, the striker who kept missing all of the chances he created, and there are some others.
The whole Brazil or England thing is really interesting to me.
Because Brazil is stronger at the start then falls off and just never reaches those heights again as they have some good years but they’re not great.
Meanwhile, England is decent at the start, then gets bad really fast and then gets better as they’re good but they just never have the juice to cross the finish line.
It’s literally, how much do you want this protagonist to suffer?
