“Jiang Li, you crazy woman!”
Jiang Li stood in the backlight, her fair face completely cold: “Yes, I am crazy. If you continue to interfere with my treatment of patients, I don’t mind personally sending you to the morgue.”
Cao Qi was stunned. He hadn’t expected such a frail-looking female comrade to have such a frightening presence.
He had assumed Jiang Li, like Jiang Xiaoxiao, would be easy to handle.
After all, because of his “reform,” he didn’t earn much at the clinic. Jiang Xiaoxiao sent him ten yuan a month, which helped him with living expenses.
Since Jiang Li had been sent back to Baisha Island, she should have been even easier to deal with than Jiang Xiaoxiao.
Cao Qi gritted his teeth: “If I don’t allow you, what can you do?”
In an instant, a flash of silver light was seen—three silver needles flew out and pierced directly into Cao Qi’s body.
“Ah! My leg is numb!”
Everyone only heard Cao Qi scream and then fall to the ground.
The three farmers carrying a stretcher no longer waited and simply rushed forward.
One, two, three—all stepped over Cao Qi.
Finally, a pair of transparent Roman sandals stepped right across his face.
Cao Qi’s face was twisted from the stepping, shoe prints all over it, even mud in his mouth, making him furious and red-eyed.
“What a great humiliation! This is an utter humiliation!” Cao Qi struggled to get up with numb, weak legs. “Jiang Li, come back! What did you do to me! Why are my legs so weak!”
Jiang Li walked quickly at the front and opened the door of a ward.
Zhao Lan helped guide the patient inside and quickly asked, “Doctor Jiang, what do you need me to do?”
She had not assisted Dr. Jiang before and didn’t know her working style.
But Zhao Lan was fully prepared.
“Give oxygen immediately,” Jiang Li said, pulling out several more silver needles and signaling them to move the patient onto the bed.
Chaos broke out. Zhang Hongfu rushed in holding a large bowl of medicine; dark brown liquid splashed onto his white coat, but he didn’t bother wiping it off.
“The medicine is here,” he said.
Jiang Li took the bowl and forcefully poured the medicine into the patient’s mouth.
The patient had completely lost consciousness; some of the medicine was vomited back out. Fortunately, there was plenty prepared, and more bowls were brought in continuously. No one knew how much medicine had been given.
Suddenly, the patient coughed violently, opened his eyes, and vomited a large amount onto the floor.
Everyone looked closely and saw it was all black blood.
After vomiting, the patient fainted again.
Jiang Li checked his eyelids and pulse and said to Zhang Hongfu: “More.”
“More! Right away!” Zhang Hongfu wiped the sweat from his forehead and brought another bowl.
One after another, bowls of detox medicine were administered. The patient vomited blood twice more afterward.
After everything was done, all that remained was waiting.
At this moment, no one urged or complained—compared to someone at death’s door, they themselves were still alive.
Inside the ward, only soft sobbing from Li Jinlian could be heard.
After a while, a weak voice sounded:
“W… where am I?”
The patient slowly opened his eyes. The frightening bluish-purple color on his face had disappeared, and his previously dilated pupils gradually regained focus.
Though still weak, he was no longer in mortal danger.
Jiang Li looked at Li Jinlian and sighed in relief: “Don’t be afraid, he’s fine now.”
Upon hearing this, Li Jinlian’s sobbing turned into loud crying. She rushed to her husband’s bedside and shook him: “You scared me to death! If you had gone to see the King of Hell, I wouldn’t live either!”
After just helping save a life, Zhang Hongfu was still sweating from shock. He checked the pulse again and found that, unlike before, it was now extremely weak but present.
“The pulse is faint, but it’s there. This is severe depletion of vital energy, but he has survived a near-death state.”
In simpler terms:
He survived.
Zhang Hongfu looked at Jiang Li excitedly.
There were many snakebites on Baisha Island every year. Antivenom serum was extremely rare.
If Jiang Li could really save such patients, did that mean…
People no longer had to watch helplessly as snakebite victims died?
The patient briefly regained consciousness again, then fell asleep.
Jiang Li instructed: “Sister Li, give him two more doses of detox medicine later until he regains full consciousness. Also, don’t remove the silver needles—they are protecting his heart meridians.”
Li Jinlian nodded firmly: “I will do it.”
She then knelt again, trying to kowtow in gratitude.
Jiang Li quickly stopped her: “Sister Li, treating patients is my duty. I can’t accept such a big bow.”
Li Jinlian held Jiang Li’s hand, eyes full of tears: “Doctor Jiang, I know that people bitten by snakes here used to be doomed. Without you today, my husband would have died no matter who he met. You saved our whole family.”
She continued: “I’ve only knelt to my parents and my late in-laws in my life, but I am willing to kneel to my savior.”
She forced herself to kneel and kowtowed three times.
Everyone outside watched this scene with mixed feelings.
A forty-year-old woman kneeling to a nineteen-year-old girl—it was striking.
Jiang Li, having been a doctor in her previous life, had seen grateful patients before, but never anyone kneeling. She quickly helped her up: “Sister Li, please don’t kneel again.”
Li Jinlian finally smiled: “I remember.”
Zhao Lan came in with a mop, about to clean the blood on the floor, but Li Jinlian quickly grabbed it: “How can I let you clean? You just saved my husband—you must be exhausted. Rest, I’ll do it!”
Zhao Lan, as a nurse, tried to stop her, and they began tugging over the mop.
Taking advantage of the chaos, Jiang Li quietly left the ward.
Outside, a large crowd stood watching, peering inside curiously.
“His face isn’t purple anymore—he’s probably fine now.”
“Doctor Jiang is amazing!”
“I won’t see Dr. Zhang anymore, I’ll go to Doctor Jiang!”
The hallway burst into laughter.
Cao Qi, meanwhile, discovered the truth behind his numb legs—it was caused by three silver needles inserted into his acupoints beneath his pants.
He was still in disbelief at her strength, but hearing the patient had been saved made him even more unwilling to accept it: “Impossible. This is absolutely impossible.”
He looked up and met Jiang Li’s gaze.
Jiang Li smiled at him: “Doctor Cao, you should be careful when speaking to me in the future. This time I only made your legs numb. Next time, I can’t guarantee where the needles will land.”
Cao Qi shivered when he saw the shining silver needles and quickly backed off.
He entered the clinic but noticed one of his former patients standing at Jiang Li’s desk.
“Comrade Huang, why are you there? Weren’t you here to see me?”
The patient shouted: “Dr. Cao, I’m not seeing you anymore. You didn’t cure me twice!”
Cao Qi’s face turned pale and he quickly went into his consultation room.
Laughter erupted again in the hallway.
Jiang Li’s desk was now crowded with patients—more than Dr. Zhang Hongfu’s.
Zhang Hongfu laughed: “Good, they finally understand.”
Jiang Li also began seeing patients.
Zhang Hongfu felt warm inside. He knew she called him “teacher” out of respect, not because she needed him.
Soon it was the last patient of the morning: a 57-year-old woman named Shou Chenghua, who had been coughing for over ten years…
After examining her, Jiang Li said seriously: “If I treat you, you must agree to three conditions.”
Zhang Hongfu was surprised: “Since when does treating a patient require conditions?”
Shou Chenghua quickly agreed to everything.
Jiang Li said:
Strictly follow my prescription.
Only take medicine from the hospital.
No additional private medicines added to my prescription.
