Every light in New Haven went dark.

The Hall of Awakening vanished beneath a blanket of absolute blackness.

Then panic began.

“What happened?” “Where are the emergency lights?” “Is the barrier failing?” Voices rose from every level of the enormous chamber.

Parents called for their children.

Military officers activated wrist-mounted lamps, only for the devices to flicker and die before producing any light.

Even the glowing runes covering the ancient walls had disappeared.

Kael stood at the center of it all with his palm pressed against the Awakening Pillar.

He could no longer feel the platform beneath his feet.

He could no longer hear his family.

The crystal had dragged his awareness inward.

Deep into the place where his four Beast Souls waited.

The volcanic land beneath D-Rex’s feet trembled.

The primordial ocean surrounding Mosasaurus rose in towering waves.

Lightning tore through the endless sky where Quetzalcoatlus spread its wings.

Behind them, the sealed territory of the Queen pulsed like a living heart.

All four Beast Souls had awakened at once.

Not fully.

But enough.

The Awakening Crystal had reached into Kael’s soul and touched something it could not understand.

A stream of pale light descended from the dark sky of his inner world.

It moved toward D-Rex first.

The Land Sovereign raised its enormous head.

Its black scales shifted over layers of dense muscle.

Unlike the common Tyrannosaurus Kael remembered from Earth’s museums and documentaries, D-Rex was larger, broader, and far more terrifying.

Four powerful arms extended from its body, and the armored ridges along its spine glowed faintly with buried heat.

The light touched one of its scales.

The entire inner world shook.

A broken sequence of symbols appeared in the air.

LAND-TYPE BEAST SOUL DETECTED.

SPECIES— The symbols shattered.

The crystal tried again.

PREDATORY REPTILIAN LINEAGE.

SPECIES— Another failure.

D-Rex released a low growl.

“It cannot name me.” There was pride in its voice.

And irritation.

Kael stared at the fragments of light falling across the volcanic plain.

“That is good.” “No.” D-Rex’s golden eyes narrowed.

“It is insulting.” Before Kael could respond, the light abandoned D-Rex and crossed the inner world.

It descended toward the ocean.

Mosasaurus rose from beneath the waves.

Its colossal body displaced enough water to drown a city.

Dark blue scales reflected the silver light, and rows of teeth filled jaws capable of crushing armored warships.

The crystal’s power touched the surface of the sea.

WATER-TYPE BEAST SOUL DETECTED.

MARINE APEX PREDATOR.

SPECIES— The words collapsed.

The ocean turned violent.

Mosasaurus opened one ancient eye.

“It lacks the memory required to comprehend us.” “That is still good,” Kael replied.

“It is inconvenient,” Mosasaurus said.

The crystal moved again.

It reached toward the storm.

Quetzalcoatlus unfolded its wings.

The sky vanished beneath them.

The enormous flying beast did not resemble the fragile fossils Ethan remembered from Earth.

Its long beak looked capable of piercing fortress walls.

A crown of backward-curving horns protected its skull, and thin silver feathers covered parts of its wings and neck.

Lightning gathered around its body.

AIR-TYPE BEAST SOUL DETECTED.

PRIMORDIAL FLYING LINEAGE.

SPECIES— The crystal failed a third time.

Quetzalcoatlus looked down at the broken symbols with obvious contempt.

“The sky of this world has forgotten true rulers.” Kael rubbed his forehead.

Even during a crisis, the three Sovereigns were competing over which failure sounded most impressive.

Then the pale light turned toward the sealed territory.

The Queen stopped smiling.

The chains surrounding her throne tightened.

Black walls of organic armor rose from the ground around her domain.

They formed an enormous cage of curved ribs, claws, and blade-like structures.

The crystal’s light struck the outer wall.

Every chain inside Kael’s soul vibrated.

DEATH-TYPE— The Queen moved.

Darkness exploded outward.

The symbols vanished before the crystal could complete the reading.

For the first time, the Hall’s power recoiled.

Kael felt the Awakening Pillar trying to pull away from his hand.

The Queen rose from her throne.

Her tall black form remained partly hidden behind the chains.

Her elongated crown brushed against the darkness above, and her long tail moved slowly behind her.

“You have seen enough,” she said.

The pale light returned.

It struck the walls around her again.

The Queen’s silver eyes narrowed.

“I said enough.” Her second jaw snapped forward.

The crystal’s light broke apart.

Outside Kael’s soul, the Hall of Awakening trembled.

People screamed as the floor shifted beneath them.

Headmaster Orion Graves remained standing.

Unlike the audience, he did not waste time asking what had happened.

He was watching the Awakening Crystal.

The enormous structure above the platform had become completely black.

Not unlit.

Black.

The stars normally moving beneath its surface had disappeared.

Every examiner in the Hall was attempting to restore the systems.

Nothing responded.

“Headmaster!” one of them shouted.

“The crystal is registering multiple transformation signatures!” Graves turned sharply.

“How many?” The examiner looked at the tablet in her hands.

Her face had gone pale.

“The number keeps changing.” “That was not my question.” “Three.

No—four.” Silence spread across the command platform.

Another examiner shook her head.

“That is impossible.

A human body can possess only one Beast Soul pattern.” “I know what the law says,” Graves replied.

His gaze returned to Kael.

The boy had not moved.

His hand remained against the pillar, and his eyes were closed.

The darkness surrounding him appeared thicker than the darkness elsewhere in the Hall.

“Could it be a Bloodline Variation?” someone asked.

“No,” Graves said.

A Bloodline Variation changed one Beast Form.

It did not create four different transformation structures.

“Then what are we seeing?” Graves did not answer.

Because he did not know.

And he hated not knowing.

Inside his soul, Kael faced the Queen.

“The crystal detected all four of you.” “For a moment,” she replied.

“That may be enough.” “It will not remember clearly.” “How can you be certain?” The Queen stepped down from her throne.

The three Sovereigns reacted immediately.

D-Rex lowered its body.

Mosasaurus surfaced further.

Quetzalcoatlus pulled lightning around its wings.

The Queen ignored them.

“Because I am going to give it something else to remember.” D-Rex growled.

“You will not alter my form.” “I will alter what the crystal sees.” “You will make me weak.” “I will make you uninteresting.” “That is worse.” Kael stepped between their territories.

“We do not have time for this.” The Queen looked at him.

For all her cruelty, possessiveness, and suspicion, her attention became strangely calm whenever it settled on Kael.

“Choose,” she said.

“Choose what?” “Which of them the world will believe belongs to you.” D-Rex answered before Kael could speak.

“Land.” Mosasaurus opened its jaws.

“Sea.” Thunder rolled through the inner sky.

“Air,” Quetzalcoatlus said.

The Queen smiled.

“Death.” “No,” Kael replied immediately.

Her smile widened.

“A wise answer.” Kael looked between the other three.

Mosasaurus would be difficult to explain in a landlocked ceremony chamber.

Any water-based transformation could attract attention from the Ocean Dominion.

Quetzalcoatlus would be worse.

Flying Beast Souls were heavily monitored because they allowed unrestricted travel through protected airspace.

D-Rex was still dangerous.

But at least his abilities could be hidden behind a common land-reptile classification.

“D-Rex.” The Land Sovereign lifted its head triumphantly.

“As expected.” “You will be disguised.” Its expression changed.

“No.” “Yes.” “I refuse.” The Queen extended one clawed hand.

Black threads emerged from her fingers and wrapped around D-Rex’s body.

The Sovereign roared.

Mountains split.

“I WILL NOT BE REDUCED TO A COMMON CREATURE.” “You are not being reduced,” Kael said.

“You are being hidden.” “They are the same.” “No.

One protects our pride.

The other protects our family.” D-Rex became silent.

Kael felt the beast’s anger.

Its instinct demanded dominance.

It wanted the Hall to tremble.

It wanted every Beastified human present to understand that a superior predator had awakened among them.

But beneath that pride existed something older.

Territorial protection.

The family had become part of Kael’s territory.

D-Rex understood that.

Slowly, the Land Sovereign lowered its head.

“Do not make me pathetic.” The Queen considered the request.

“I will make no promises.” Kael almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

The black threads tightened around D-Rex’s presence.

They did not alter the creature itself.

Instead, they folded its spiritual signature inward, hiding layer after layer of power.

Gravity disappeared.

The volcanic heat dimmed.

Its ancient bloodline became blurred beneath a false pattern.

The Queen constructed a new identity from fragments the Awakening Crystal already understood.

Small reptile.

Wingless drake lineage.

Dark scales.

Common physical enhancement.

A weak trace of earth affinity.

The result was deliberately unimpressive.

A Shadow Drake.

D-Rex stared at the false pattern floating before him.

“This creature has poor posture.” “It does not actually exist,” the Queen replied.

“Then improve it.” “No.” “I hate you.” “The feeling is mutual.” Kael felt the crystal searching again.

This time, it found the false pattern.

Its light wrapped around the disguise.

The Hall’s systems responded.

Outside, the ancient runes began glowing one by one.

Emergency lights returned across the chamber.

The audience fell silent as the Awakening Crystal slowly cleared.

Words formed upon the holographic display.

BEAST SOUL IDENTIFICATION IN PROGRESS.

The examiner nearest Kael raised her hand.

“Participant, remain still.” Kael opened his eyes.

The Hall returned around him.

Thousands of faces stared at him.

He could see fear in some.

Curiosity in others.

His mother stood with one arm around Noah and the other gripping Lyra’s shoulder.

Marcus had partially Beastified during the blackout.

Thick brown fur covered his forearms, and the beginnings of curved horns pressed against his temples.

His father had been preparing to fight his way onto the platform.

Kael’s chest tightened.

Even surrounded by soldiers and powerful awakeners, Marcus’s first instinct had been to reach his son.

The display flickered.

SPECIES: SHADOW DRAKE.

CLASSIFICATION: COMMON.

ELEMENTAL AFFINITY: EARTH.

INITIAL COMPATIBILITY— The final line froze.

The crystal pulsed.

The Queen’s voice sharpened.

Do not move.

A thin stream of energy passed through Kael’s body.

For one dangerous instant, the disguise weakened.

The display changed.

INITIAL COMPATIBILITY: ERROR.

Murmurs spread throughout the Hall.

The examiner touched the control panel.

The system recalculated.

INITIAL COMPATIBILITY: UNABLE TO DETERMINE.

The Hall became quiet.

Then the transformations began.

Awakening ceremonies did not summon external beasts.

The crystal forced the newly awakened person into a brief partial Beastification, allowing examiners to confirm the Beast Soul’s physical pattern.

Heat spread through Kael’s body.

His bones ached.

The skin along his arms tightened.

The Queen held the disguise firmly around D-Rex’s power.

Remember, she whispered.

Small.

D-Rex growled inside him.

I despise that word.

Black scales emerged across Kael’s right hand.

They spread to his wrist before stopping.

His fingernails darkened and sharpened slightly.

His pupils narrowed into golden slits.

A faint ridge formed along the center of his forehead, but no horns emerged.

That was all.

No massive increase in size.

No monstrous limbs.

No gravity crushing the platform.

Just a scaled hand and reptilian eyes.

The examiner studied him.

“Can you move your fingers?” Kael opened and closed his transformed hand.

“Yes.” “Any pain?” “Some.” “Loss of control?” D-Rex wanted to bite the pillar in half.

“No.” The examiner inspected the readings.

The tension in the Hall gradually faded.

After the blackout and the crystal errors, everyone had expected a legendary transformation.

Instead, Kael appeared to possess a weak reptilian Beast Soul with limited partial Beastification.

Disappointment moved through the audience like a breeze.

“A Common rank?” “All that trouble for a few scales?” “What even is a Shadow Drake?” “I’ve never heard of one.” Several noble teenagers laughed quietly.

Adrian Vale did not.

He stared at Kael’s hand with a slight frown.

The reaction had been too large.

The result was too small.

Even he understood that something did not fit.

Then Noah’s voice echoed across the Hall.

“BIG BROTHER HAS DRAGON EYES!” Everyone turned toward him.

The five-year-old stood on his chair with both arms raised.

“I KNEW HE WOULD GET SOMETHING COOL!” Lyra pulled at his shirt.

“Sit down!” “No!” Noah pointed at Kael’s transformed hand.

“CAN YOU CLIMB WALLS NOW?” A few people laughed.

Kael looked toward him.

“I don’t know.” “CAN YOU BREATHE FIRE?” “No.” “CAN YOU FLY?” “No.” Noah’s excitement faded slightly.

“Can you bite bad people?” Kael glanced at his sharpened nails.

“Probably.” Noah immediately brightened.

“THEN IT’S AWESOME!” The laughter in the Hall changed.

It was warmer now.

Less cruel.

Elara smiled at Kael.

Marcus allowed his partial transformation to fade and gave his son a proud nod.

They did not care that the display said Common.

They cared that he was safe.

Kael slowly released the Beastification.

The scales withdrew beneath his skin.

His eyes returned to normal.

The examiner cleared her throat.

“Participant Seven Hundred and Seventy-Seven, Kael Draven.

Awakening complete.” Kael removed his hand from the pillar.

The moment he did, the Awakening Crystal became still.

Headmaster Graves watched him leave the platform.

The old man ignored the classification.

He ignored the whispered jokes.

He ignored the examiners already blaming the blackout on an ancient energy fault.

His attention remained fixed upon one line.

INITIAL COMPATIBILITY: UNABLE TO DETERMINE.

Every Beastified human possessed a measurable compatibility with their Beast Soul.

Even unstable awakenings produced a number.

Kael Draven had produced none.

Graves looked toward the platform where the boy’s scaled hand had briefly rested.

A shallow indentation marked the surface of the reinforced floor.

It was small.

Almost invisible.

But the material used to construct the platform could withstand the weight of an Elite-ranked elephant transformation.

A Common-ranked Shadow Drake should not have damaged it.

Headmaster Graves leaned back in his chair.

He did not know what Kael Draven had awakened.

But he knew one thing with certainty.

It was not a Shadow Drake.

And whatever it truly was had chosen to hide.
