The silver eye did not blink.
Arin stood beneath it, one hand resting on the hilt of his sword.
The weapon was useless.
He knew that.
Lucan knew that.
The creature probably knew it too.
That was not why Arin kept his hand there.
The gesture reminded him that fear and surrender were different things.
Guardian Zero lowered its head another meter.
Its scales reflected the gray morning light in broken patterns. For a creature large enough to crush a house beneath one claw, it moved with almost impossible silence.
"My Founder smells different."
Its voice was strange.
Not deep.
Not monstrous.
Young.
Almost innocent.
Then came the question again.
"What did you do to him?"
Lucan slowly moved one foot backward.
Arin noticed.
The Guardian noticed too.
Its enormous silver pupil shifted toward him.
Lucan stopped moving.
Arin looked up.
"Cael is alive."
The creature froze.
Even the air seemed to stop.
"What?"
"Cael Elysium is alive."
Guardian Zero’s head rose sharply.
The movement created a gust strong enough to pull dust from the ground.
Lucan raised an arm over his face.
Arin remained where he was.
The creature stared north.
Then south.
Then toward the invisible valley that did not actually exist inside this trial.
"No."
The word carried pain.
Not disbelief.
Pain.
"Cael died."
"He didn’t."
"I saw him fall."
Arin’s expression tightened.
"Where?"
The Guardian’s attention snapped back to him.
Its wings shifted.
The entire landscape darkened beneath them.
"You are not Cael."
"I never said I was."
"You carry Founder."
"So does he."
Arin nodded toward Lucan.
Guardian Zero turned toward him.
Lucan’s expression hardened.
The creature sniffed once.
A strange sound, considering the size of its head.
Then it recoiled.
"You are wrong."
Lucan frowned.
"Excuse me?"
"Your Founder is wrong."
Silver light spread through the Guardian’s eye.
The System responded.
«LEGACY ENTITY SCANNING CLAIMANT.
INTERFERENCE DETECTED.
EXTERNAL AUTHORITY SOURCE CONFIRMED.»
Lucan looked at his palm.
The scarred Founder symbol burned beneath his skin.
Guardian Zero growled.
This time, the sound was not childlike.
The ground cracked.
"You stole it."
Lucan drew his sword.
Arin caught his wrist before the blade left its sheath.
"Don’t."
Lucan looked at him.
"It intends to kill me."
"Maybe."
"Reassuring."
Arin kept his gaze on the Guardian.
"Guardian Zero."
Its head turned toward him.
"Explain."
The creature’s eye narrowed.
"You command me?"
"No."
Arin released Lucan’s wrist.
"I’m asking before this becomes stupid."
For several seconds, Guardian Zero did nothing.
Then its wings folded.
Not fully.
But enough that the sky returned.
"You speak like him."
"Cael?"
"Before he became tired."
Arin said nothing.
Lucan looked between them.
"Can we discuss the part where it accused me of theft?"
Guardian Zero’s gaze returned to him.
"The mark is not yours."
Lucan raised his palm.
"I know."
Arin looked sharply toward him.
Lucan continued before he could ask.
"I told you. I inherited it from a corpse."
"That is not inheritance," Guardian Zero said.
"It was in his body."
"You cut it out."
Silence.
Arin slowly turned toward Lucan.
Lucan’s jaw tightened.
"That is an oversimplification."
"Did you?"
Lucan looked at Arin.
"Yes."
There it was.
No hesitation.
Arin’s expression went cold.
"Who?"
"A Hollow Crown operative."
"Name."
"Marrec Dain."
Guardian Zero growled again.
Arin looked toward it.
"You know him?"
"No."
That surprised him.
The creature continued.
"But I know the mark."
The silver eye moved toward Lucan’s palm.
"It belonged to Seventh."
Lucan frowned.
"Seventh?"
Guardian Zero made a low sound.
"Founder Seven."
Arin felt a chill.
Cael had said there had been many Founders.
He had never given them numbers.
"Was Cael Seven?"
"No."
"Then what number was he?"
The Guardian went silent.
Arin waited.
Finally:
"Cael was Thirteen."
Lucan’s face changed.
Arin’s did not.
Inside, the number settled heavily.
Thirteen.
At least thirteen Founders.
Maybe more.
"How many came after him?" Arin asked.
Guardian Zero looked at him.
"None."
That answer did not match anything else.
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Project Elysium chose me."
"Then you are after him."
"Lucan has another Founder mark."
"Old mark."
"From Seven."
"Yes."
Arin looked toward Lucan.
"How old was the corpse?"
Lucan hesitated.
That was enough.
"Lucan."
"Not fresh."
"How old?"
"Preserved."
"That isn’t an answer."
Lucan exhaled.
"The Hollow Crown recovered the body beneath an old fortress seventeen years ago."
Arin stared.
"And you cut the mark out of a seventeen-year-old corpse?"
"It was preserved far longer than seventeen years."
"That makes it better?"
"No."
Lucan glanced toward Guardian Zero.
"It makes it relevant."
Arin did not like that answer.
Not even slightly.
Guardian Zero lowered its head again.
"Seven betrayed House."
Lucan’s expression sharpened.
"How?"
The creature’s silver eye dimmed.
"Don’t remember."
Lucan laughed without humor.
"Convenient."
Guardian Zero bared teeth longer than swords.
"I remember biting him."
Lucan stopped laughing.
Arin almost smiled.
Almost.
He looked toward the creature again.
"You said you saw Cael fall."
"Yes."
"Where?"
Guardian Zero’s eye unfocused.
The air changed.
For one strange second, Arin saw a reflection inside the silver pupil.
A city.
Not House Elysium.
Another city.
Larger.
Much larger.
Towers reached into a violet sky.
Something burned above them.
Hundreds of objects fell like stars.
Then Cael appeared.
Younger.
Standing on a black platform.
Blood covered one side of his face.
He was shouting.
Arin could not hear the words.
Guardian Zero’s voice became quieter.
"The sky was broken."
The image vanished.
"Cael told me to leave."
"Why?"
"He said the Ark needed one Guardian outside."
Arin’s stomach tightened.
"Outside what?"
The creature looked at him.
"The ending."
Lucan went still.
Arin hated vague answers.
He was becoming increasingly convinced ancient beings did it deliberately.
"What ending?"
Guardian Zero stared at him.
Then at Lucan.
Then back at Arin.
"I don’t know."
"You were there."
"I was young."
"You are the size of a fortress."
"I was smaller."
Lucan muttered:
"That is somehow worse."
Guardian Zero ignored him.
Arin crossed his arms.
"Then tell me what you do remember."
The creature lowered itself until its chest touched the ground.
Even resting, its back rose higher than nearby trees.
"I remember alarms."
"Good."
"Children."
Arin’s expression changed.
"The Nursery?"
"Many Nurseries."
"How many?"
Guardian Zero’s tail shifted.
The ground shook behind them.
"Don’t know."
"Try."
The creature thought.
"More than twelve."
Lucan looked sharply toward Arin.
That confirmed something.
The Ark network was not one facility.
It was distributed.
"Then?"
Arin asked.
Guardian Zero’s eye dimmed further.
"Founders argued."
"About what?"
"Opening."
Arin frowned.
"Opening the Ark?"
"Yes."
"To save people?"
"Yes."
"And someone opposed it."
"Many."
Lucan spoke.
"The Hollow Crown?"
Guardian Zero looked at him.
"Do not know Hollow Crown."
Lucan’s expression tightened.
So the organization came later.
Arin asked:
"Cael wanted to open it?"
The Guardian hesitated.
Then:
"At first."
That matched Lucan’s story.
Every Founder moved toward restoration.
Then something changed.
"What stopped him?"
Guardian Zero’s claws dug into the earth.
"Children screamed."
Arin felt cold.
"Why?"
The Guardian’s silver eye looked toward him.
"I don’t know."
That answer carried shame.
Not ignorance alone.
It hated not remembering.
Arin recognized that emotion.
EVE had shown the same one.
Memory loss in House Elysium was not random.
Someone—or something—had removed pieces deliberately.
"Did Cael order his own imprisonment?"
Guardian Zero’s head snapped up.
"What?"
Lucan looked toward Arin.
"You never mentioned that."
"I didn’t trust you."
"Fair."
Guardian Zero rose partially.
"No."
Arin held his ground.
"I saw the record."
"No."
"It carried his authorization."
"No!"
The roar exploded outward.
Lucan staggered.
Arin’s coat snapped violently behind him.
The ground fractured in a circle around the Guardian.
For one second, its voice lost all youth.
"CAEL WOULD NEVER SEAL HIMSELF."
Silence followed.
Arin’s ears rang.
He waited until the pressure passed.
Then spoke.
"He did."
The Guardian’s eye trembled.
"Lie."
"I don’t care whether you like it."
Silver light gathered beneath its scales.
Lucan’s hand moved toward his sword again.
Arin raised one hand.
Not toward Lucan.
Toward Guardian Zero.
"You asked what happened to Cael."
The creature froze.
"I told you he’s alive."
The light remained.
"You want to see him?"
That stopped everything.
Guardian Zero stared.
Arin continued.
"Then control yourself."
Lucan slowly looked toward him.
The expression on his face said clearly that Arin had finally lost his mind.
Arin ignored him.
Guardian Zero’s glow faded.
Slowly.
The creature lowered its head.
"You can take me?"
"Not from inside this trial."
"Then leave."
"I’m trying."
"Leave now."
"I can’t."
Guardian Zero growled.
Arin pointed toward the invisible System.
"Legacy Trial."
The creature blinked.
Then sniffed the air.
Its eye widened.
"You entered Cabin Zero."
"Yes."
Guardian Zero recoiled.
"No."
Arin’s patience thinned.
"Everyone says that today."
"You should not be here."
"Useful information after entry."
Guardian Zero stood fully.
Its wings spread again.
"Cabin Zero is wrong."
Lucan frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The Guardian looked toward the sky.
"Cael destroyed it."
Arin went still.
"No, he didn’t."
"Yes."
"We entered through it."
"Then it came back."
That was not a comforting answer.
Lucan stepped closer.
"Can the city rebuild deleted structures?"
Guardian Zero looked confused.
"House rebuilds everything."
That explained too much.
Memory purges.
Restored districts.
Repeated Founder cycles.
Cael destroying systems only for Elysium to rebuild them later.
Arin touched the wooden rabbit stored in his inventory.
The First Promise.
Cabin Zero had tested values.
Or appeared to.
What if the Trial itself had been reconstructed from fragments?
What if its rules had changed?
"Can Cabin Zero kill us?" Arin asked.
Guardian Zero tilted its head.
"Yes."
Lucan closed his eyes.
"Wonderful."
Arin continued.
"What happens if we fail?"
"You become part of Cabin."
Silence.
Lucan stared.
"What does that mean?"
Guardian Zero’s voice became small again.
"Don’t know."
Arin hated that phrase now.
Then the System activated.
«INSTITUTIONAL CONTINUITY TEST:
6 HOURS ELAPSED.
CIVILIZATION STATUS:
STABLE.»
Arin looked at the update.
Good.
The cities were functioning.
Without them.
Then another notification appeared.
«SHARED CIVILIZATION EVENT:
LEGACY ENTITY CONTACT ACHIEVED.
OPTIONAL OBJECTIVE AVAILABLE:
RETURN GUARDIAN ZERO TO ELYSIUM.»
Arin stared.
Lucan read it too.
Guardian Zero could not.
"What?"
Arin ignored him for the moment.
A reward line appeared.
«REWARD:
UNKNOWN.
RISK:
EXTREME.»
Of course.
Arin looked at Guardian Zero.
"If I return you to House Elysium, what happens?"
The creature’s tail stopped moving.
"I see Cael."
"Maybe."
"You said alive."
"He is."
"Then I go."
Lucan immediately stepped between them.
"No."
Arin looked at him.
Lucan pointed at the creature.
"You want to bring that into the city?"
"Eventually."
"That is insane."
"It already belongs there."
"It belongs to Cael."
"Who is imprisoned there."
"Exactly."
Lucan stared.
"That is not the argument you think it is."
Guardian Zero lowered its head toward Lucan.
"You are noisy."
Lucan looked up.
"I have been told."
Arin crossed his arms.
"If Zero is bonded to Cael, it may unlock memories."
"Or free him."
"Maybe."
"Or destroy half the city."
"Possible."
Lucan stared at him.
"You are alarmingly comfortable with terrible possibilities."
"I prefer knowing they exist."
Lucan shook his head.
"Absolutely not."
Arin looked at him.
"You don’t decide."
Lucan’s eyes narrowed.
"We are equal claimants."
"Inside the trial."
"Correct."
"This concerns my home."
"It concerns Founder Authority."
Arin stepped closer.
"No."
His voice lowered.
"It concerns EVE. Lyra. Cael. My city."
Lucan’s expression hardened.
"And if your decision destroys them?"
"Then I’ll answer for it."
"That’s not enough."
"It’s more than you’ve offered."
That hit.
Lucan went silent.
Arin continued.
"You came to Elysium with armed men."
"Yes."
"You threatened my sister."
"I needed leverage."
"Wrong answer."
Lucan’s jaw tightened.
Arin’s gaze stayed cold.
"You don’t get veto power over my family because you’ve decided you’re the responsible one now."
Silence.
Guardian Zero looked between them.
Then spoke.
"Brothers fight strangely."
Both men looked at it.
"We are not—"
Arin stopped.
Lucan stopped.
Guardian Zero blinked.
"You smell same."
Arin rubbed his forehead.
"Not important."
"It is important."
"No."
"You are family."
Lucan laughed.
Arin gave him a look.
Guardian Zero continued.
"Founders with family are rare."
Arin froze.
Lucan’s smile disappeared.
"What did you say?"
The creature tilted its head.
"Rare."
Not impossible.
Rare.
That contradicted Cael.
Cael had claimed every previous Founder arrived alone.
Arin’s expression sharpened.
"How many had family?"
Guardian Zero began counting claws.
Slowly.
Lucan watched.
"This is absurd."
Guardian Zero ignored him.
"Three."
Arin felt his pulse change.
"Which Founders?"
"Two."
A pause.
"Five."
Another.
"Thirteen."
Cael.
Arin went completely still.
"Cael had family."
"Yes."
"Who?"
Guardian Zero’s silver eye softened.
"Me."
Arin almost cursed.
Lucan actually did.
"That’s not what he meant."
Guardian Zero looked offended.
"I am family."
Arin pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Anyone human?"
The Guardian thought.
Then nodded.
"Girl."
Everything stopped.
Arin lowered his hand.
"What girl?"
Guardian Zero’s expression changed.
Something like confusion passed through its massive face.
"Small."
"Name."
The creature opened its mouth.
No sound came.
Its silver eye flashed.
Once.
Twice.
Then red symbols erupted across its scales.
«MEMORY RESTRICTION DETECTED.»
Arin’s System reacted immediately.
Guardian Zero screamed.
Its enormous body collapsed sideways.
Lucan leaped back.
Arin moved forward.
"Zero!"
The creature clawed at its own head.
Silver light poured from its eye.
"Name..."
It tried.
"I..."
The ground shook violently.
"Her name..."
Another warning appeared.
«LEGACY ENTITY MEMORY PURGE INITIATED.»
Arin’s expression changed.
Again.
The same thing that happened to EVE.
"System, stop it."
«AUTHORITY UNAVAILABLE DURING LEGACY TRIAL.»
Arin swore.
Guardian Zero thrashed.
Trees snapped beneath its tail.
Lucan shouted:
"Move away!"
"No."
"That thing is going to crush you!"
Arin ran toward its head.
"ZERO!"
The silver eye found him.
Barely.
"Founder..."
"Listen to me."
Red symbols spread across the scales.
Arin remembered EVE.
Family Authority.
But Lyra was not here.
His Authority was restricted.
Could he use the First Promise?
He opened his inventory.
The wooden rabbit appeared in his hand.
It felt ridiculous.
He did not care.
The object glowed.
«LEGACY TOKEN RESPONDING.
THE FIRST PROMISE:
A HOME DOES NOT ABANDON THOSE WHO BELONG TO IT.»
Arin stared at the words.
Then understood.
Maybe not fully.
Enough.
He placed the wooden rabbit against Guardian Zero’s scales.
"You’re family."
Lucan stared.
"What?"
Arin ignored him.
"House Elysium recognized family before."
The token brightened.
Guardian Zero’s body froze.
"Founder..."
"You said you belonged to Cael."
"Yes."
"Cael belongs to Elysium."
The System flickered.
"Then so do you."
White light exploded.
Lucan covered his face.
The red purge symbols stopped.
«LEGACY TOKEN CONSUMED.
TEMPORARY FAMILY PROTECTION EXTENDED.
MEMORY PURGE INTERRUPTED.»
Guardian Zero collapsed fully.
The earth shook.
Then silence.
Arin stood beside the enormous silver eye.
For several seconds, it remained closed.
Then it opened.
Slowly.
"Arin."
His blood went cold.
Guardian Zero had never used his name.
"Yes?"
The creature’s voice had changed.
Older.
Not permanently.
Just for one moment.
A memory speaking through it.
"Cael had a daughter."
Lucan went still.
Arin’s pulse hammered.
"Name."
Guardian Zero whispered.
"Elara."
Arin stopped breathing.
Lucan’s face drained of color.
The Guardian continued.
"Elara Elysium."
The world went silent.
Arin heard only one thought.
His mother.
Elara Valerius.
The woman Serena claimed was alive.
The woman who had given Serena an Elysium dagger.
The woman whose blood had somehow placed Arin on Project Elysium’s path.
Guardian Zero’s eye slowly closed.
Before losing consciousness, it whispered one final sentence.
"Your mother was born here."
