For a long moment, Arin did not move.
Guardian Zero’s enormous silver eye slowly closed.
The creature’s breathing settled into deep, uneven vibrations that traveled through the ground beneath Arin’s boots.
But Arin barely noticed.
Two words repeated inside his head.
Elara Elysium.
His mother.
Not Elara Valerius.
Not originally.
Elysium.
Lucan was the first to recover.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
Not dismissive.
Not mocking.
Simply unwilling to accept what he had heard.
Arin looked toward him.
Lucan’s face had gone pale.
"Guardian Zero could be corrupted."
"Possible."
"The Memory Purge damaged it."
"Possible."
"It confused names."
"Also possible."
Lucan’s eyes snapped toward him.
"You seem remarkably calm."
"I’m considering whether killing you would improve my mood."
"Ah."
Lucan exhaled.
"There you are."
Arin looked back at the unconscious Guardian.
His outward expression remained controlled.
Inside, his thoughts were anything but.
His mother had possessed an Elysium dagger years before Arin awakened.
She had apparently known Project Elysium would react to him.
She had been secretly imprisoned.
And now an ancient Guardian claimed she was Cael’s daughter.
If that was true, then House Elysium had not selected Arin randomly.
It had recognized him.
His family had been connected to this place before he was born.
Which raised another question.
Why had Cael acted as if he didn’t know?
Arin remembered the prisoner staring at him through the transparent cell.
The same gray eyes.
The same familiar structure in his face.
At the time, Arin had assumed Cael resembled him because both were Founders.
Now that assumption felt embarrassingly convenient.
Lucan approached Guardian Zero carefully.
"Can we wake it?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because it just survived another Memory Purge."
"Exactly why I want answers before something tries again."
Arin looked toward him.
"You’re welcome to climb inside its mouth and shout."
Lucan considered the enormous jaw.
"I’ll wait."
"Wise."
Arin activated his System.
"Show Guardian Zero’s condition."
«ELYSIUM GUARDIAN — ZERO
STATUS:
STABLE.
CONSCIOUSNESS:
SUSPENDED.
MEMORY INTEGRITY:
38%.
FAMILY PROTECTION:
TEMPORARY.
PRIMARY BOND:
CAEL ELYSIUM.
SECONDARY RECOGNITION:
ARIN ELYSIUM.»
Thirty-eight percent.
Less than half.
That alone made every statement Zero offered questionable.
But not useless.
Arin tried another command.
"Search archive for Elara Elysium."
«SEARCHING...
RECORD FOUND.»
His heart tightened.
Lucan saw the screen.
Neither spoke.
The record opened.
Then immediately corrupted.
«ELARA ELYSIUM
STATUS:
[DATA REMOVED]
BLOODLINE:
FOUNDER DESCENDANT
PARENT:
CAEL ELYSIUM
SECOND PARENT:
[RECORD SEALED]
BIRTH LOCATION:
ARK NURSERY — PRIME
CURRENT STATUS:
UNKNOWN»
Arin stared.
Not corrupted testimony.
Not a damaged Guardian’s memory.
A System record.
Lucan read it twice.
Then muttered something unpleasant.
Arin almost agreed.
"Founder descendant," Lucan said.
"Yes."
"That makes you..."
"Cael’s grandson."
The words sounded ridiculous aloud.
Arin rubbed his forehead.
Somewhere inside Sublevel Nine, an ancient prisoner was apparently his grandfather.
Possibly.
Assuming House Elysium had not invented family records as part of some larger manipulation.
At this point Arin considered paranoia a survival skill.
Lucan looked toward him.
"And me."
Arin lowered his hand.
"What?"
"If I am truly Aldric’s firstborn..."
Lucan gestured toward the record.
"...and we share the same mother."
Arin’s expression changed.
"You said you’re Father’s firstborn son."
"Correct."
"You never said Elara was your mother."
"No."
The silence that followed carried an edge.
Arin stepped closer.
"Explain."
Lucan looked toward the horizon.
"My records list Lady Elara as my mother."
"Records?"
"I don’t remember her from infancy."
"Convenient."
"I was removed from House Valerius before I was old enough to remember much."
"By who?"
"The Hollow Crown."
"You expect me to believe they kidnapped a Duke’s firstborn and erased every trace of him?"
"Not kidnapped."
Lucan’s voice turned cold.
"Given."
Arin’s stare sharpened.
"By Father?"
Lucan laughed.
There was no amusement in it.
"Ask him."
"That’s not an answer."
"It’s the only one I have."
Arin hated that phrase almost as much as Guardian Zero’s I don’t know.
Lucan continued.
"I grew up knowing Aldric Valerius was my father. I knew Elara was recorded as my mother. But every time I asked why I had been removed, I was told I had been born incompatible."
"Incompatible with what?"
Lucan raised his scarred palm.
"Founder inheritance."
Arin looked at the mark.
The pieces shifted.
House Valerius.
The Hollow Crown.
Founder bloodlines.
His mother’s connection to Cael.
Lucan having another Founder’s authority carved into his body.
"You weren’t born with that."
"No."
"They gave it to you."
"Eventually."
"To force compatibility."
Lucan’s expression tightened.
"Yes."
"How many times?"
No response.
Arin’s voice became colder.
"Lucan."
"Three."
Arin stared.
"The first two failed."
"What happened?"
Lucan’s jaw flexed.
"The bodies rejected the fragments."
"Bodies?"
"Other candidates."
Not Lucan.
Children, perhaps.
Young nobles.
Bloodline experiments.
Arin felt anger spread through him slowly.
Not explosive anger.
The kind that became clearer the longer it remained.
"The Hollow Crown has been experimenting with Founder Authority."
"For decades."
"And my mother knew."
"Eventually."
"Father?"
Lucan hesitated.
Wrong thing to do.
Arin took one step closer.
"Father?"
"I don’t know how much Aldric knew."
"You know something."
"I know your mother believed someone inside House Valerius was cooperating with the Hollow Crown."
"Serena told me that."
Lucan’s eyes narrowed.
"Then Serena survived."
"Obviously."
"She was supposed to die seven years ago."
Arin went still.
"Who ordered it?"
"I wasn’t part of the operation."
"Name."
"I don’t have one."
"Then stop speaking like you know more than you do."
Lucan’s expression hardened.
Neither brother looked away.
Then the System intervened.
«INSTITUTIONAL CONTINUITY TEST:
12 HOURS ELAPSED.
COMBINED CIVILIZATION STATUS:
STABLE.
INTERVENTION:
NOT REQUIRED.»
Arin dismissed it immediately.
The cities were functioning.
Good.
That gave him another twelve hours before the continuity test ended.
He looked toward Guardian Zero.
Leaving it here was not an option.
Taking it back to House Elysium remained dangerous.
But it was Cael’s Guardian.
And now possibly the only living being with intact memories of Arin’s mother as a child.
"We bring Zero with us."
Lucan looked at him.
"Back to the cities?"
"No."
"House Elysium?"
"Eventually."
Lucan shook his head.
"We’ve already discussed how terrible that idea is."
"You discussed it."
"And you ignored me."
"Correct."
The older brother sighed.
"I am beginning to understand why Aldric exiled you."
Arin’s expression flattened.
"Say that again."
Lucan saw the change immediately.
He lifted both hands.
"Poor joke."
"Very."
For all his increased confidence, Arin discovered some things remained effortless ways to irritate him.
His father was one.
Lyra was another.
His mother was rapidly becoming a third.
Guardian Zero stirred.
Both men turned.
The silver eye opened halfway.
"Elara..."
Arin immediately approached.
"Zero."
The Guardian looked at him.
"Small."
"You remember her?"
"Running."
"Where?"
The creature’s massive head shifted slightly.
"Garden."
"What garden?"
"Prime."
"The Nursery?"
"Yes."
Lucan stepped closer.
"Who was her mother?"
Guardian Zero’s pupil contracted.
A red symbol appeared beneath one scale.
Arin saw it immediately.
"Stop."
Lucan frowned.
"We need—"
"No."
Arin moved between him and the Guardian.
"Every time it touches a sealed memory, the purge starts."
"We need the answer."
"We need Zero alive."
Lucan’s jaw tightened.
Arin looked at Guardian Zero.
"Don’t search for anything that hurts."
The creature blinked.
"Founder asks strange things."
"Get used to it."
Zero’s eye softened.
"Cael said same."
Arin almost smiled.
"Of course he did."
The Guardian shifted one wing.
"Elara liked flowers."
Arin froze slightly.
"What kind?"
"Orange."
That struck deeper than expected.
Candied orange peels.
The eastern greenhouse.
A tiny habit Serena had used to prove she knew Elara.
Arin remembered his mother’s hands smelling faintly of citrus after visiting the greenhouse.
A useless childhood detail.
Except now it wasn’t useless.
It was a thread.
Something real connecting the woman who raised him to this ancient place.
"She grew them?" Arin asked.
Zero gave a rumbling sound.
"Stole them."
Lucan snorted.
Arin looked at him.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"Apparently our mother stole flowers."
"Fruit."
Guardian Zero corrected him.
Lucan’s mouth twitched.
Arin felt something unfamiliar then.
Not happiness.
Something quieter.
For years, Elara had existed mostly as a collection of fading memories.
A voice.
A face.
A mother who supposedly died.
Now she was becoming a person again.
A child who stole oranges from an impossible garden.
A daughter.
Perhaps a Founder descendant.
Someone who had known about Elysium long before Arin.
He wanted answers.
Badly.
But he would not destroy Guardian Zero’s remaining memories to satisfy himself.
That was the difference between wanting truth and consuming everything in pursuit of it.
Arin stood.
"Rest."
Zero closed its eye.
"Wake when Cael."
"That’s the plan."
The Guardian went silent.
Lucan looked toward Arin.
"You believe it."
"I believe enough to investigate."
"That’s very different."
"Yes."
Lucan crossed his arms.
"So Cael may be our grandfather."
"Possibly."
"The prisoner you refused to free."
"Correct."
Lucan smiled faintly.
"Family gatherings will be entertaining."
Arin imagined Lyra meeting Cael.
Then EVE.
Then Guardian Zero.
Then Serena.
Possibly his mother.
Possibly Lucan.
His headache returned.
"No."
"What?"
"We’re not discussing family gatherings."
"You’re afraid."
"I fought a mountain."
"But the thought of everyone eating together frightens you."
Arin gave him a long look.
"Guardian Zero has room beneath one claw for you."
Lucan stopped smiling.
"Understood."
A signal appeared in the distance.
One flame.
Then another.
Arin immediately turned.
Not from the System.
A physical signal tower.
The closest hill toward the cities had activated.
Two fires.
Supply request.
Another tower responded.
Then a third.
No Founder required.
No emergency.
The network worked.
Arin watched the lights.
Something loosened in his chest.
Lucan followed his gaze.
"They didn’t call us."
"No."
"Does that bother you?"
"No."
It pleased him more than he expected.
The people had encountered a problem.
They solved it without Arin.
That was the entire point.
A System message confirmed it.
«INSTITUTIONAL CONTINUITY:
68%.
CIVILIZATION HAS RESOLVED MULTIPLE RESOURCE DISPUTES WITHOUT FOUNDER INTERVENTION.
BONUS CONDITION ACHIEVED.»
Lucan stared.
"Sixty-eight."
"What was yours before?"
"Twelve."
Arin looked at him.
Lucan sighed.
"You don’t have to look pleased."
"I’m not."
"You are internally."
"Very."
Lucan shook his head.
They remained beside Guardian Zero for several hours.
The creature slept.
Arin used the time to inspect their surroundings.
Guardian Zero had crossed enormous distances invisibly, but traces remained where its claws struck the ground.
No mana.
No ordinary biological signature.
Its body seemed partially integrated with technology far more advanced than the Central Workshop’s current unlock level.
Arin’s System eventually produced a scan.
«GUARDIAN ZERO MATERIAL ANALYSIS:
ORGANIC COMPONENT:
41%.
SYNTHETIC COMPONENT:
46%.
UNKNOWN:
13%.
REPAIR CAPABILITY:
LOCKED.
REQUIRED FACILITY:
GUARDIAN FORGE.»
Arin paused.
"Guardian Forge."
Lucan looked over.
"What?"
Arin showed him.
Lucan’s eyebrows rose.
"House Elysium has a facility for building those?"
"Repairing, at least."
"That’s worse."
"Or better."
"Depending on whether you’re insane."
Arin ignored him.
Another facility.
Another future restoration objective.
But not now.
Arin had learned something during the trial.
Unlocking everything because it existed was a poor strategy.
Resources.
Purpose.
Need.
Those came first.
House Elysium would grow deliberately.
Not simply because the System dangled another locked door.
The thought felt important.
The city should serve the family.
Not the family serve the city.
At exactly twenty-four hours after leaving their settlements, the System activated.
«INSTITUTIONAL CONTINUITY TEST COMPLETE.
COMBINED CIVILIZATION STATUS:
FUNCTIONAL.
FOUNDER INTERVENTIONS:
ZERO.
RESULT:
PASS.»
Guardian Zero woke at the sound.
Lucan stood.
Arin did as well.
Then the world around them began dissolving.
The cities.
Roads.
Mountains.
Everything faded into white.
Zero looked around.
"Founder?"
Arin reached toward its snout.
"Stay close."
The System flashed.
«LEGACY ENTITY DETECTED WITHIN TRIAL.
ENTITY IS NOT PART OF CABIN ZERO SIMULATION.
EXTRACTION AVAILABLE.»
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
Not part of the simulation.
That meant Guardian Zero had entered from outside the trial somehow.
Interesting.
"Extract with me."
«WARNING.
GUARDIAN ZERO WILL BE TRANSPORTED TO HOUSE ELYSIUM TERRITORY UPON TRIAL COMPLETION.
CONFIRM?»
Lucan immediately spoke.
"No."
Arin selected yes.
Lucan stared at him.
"I hate making decisions with you."
"Then make faster ones."
White light swallowed them.
The last thing Arin saw was Guardian Zero’s silver eye closing.
Then the trial disappeared.
Arin landed on one knee.
Cold metal beneath his hand.
Cabin Zero.
The real one.
Lucan appeared several meters away.
Both immediately looked toward the System.
«LEGACY TRIAL STAGE TWO COMPLETE.
CIVILIZATION SCORE:
ARIN ELYSIUM — 9,884.
LUCAN VALERIUS — 6,972.
SHARED CIVILIZATION BONUS:
BOTH CLAIMANTS +500.
INSTITUTIONAL CONTINUITY BONUS:
ARIN ELYSIUM +1,000.
FINAL STAGE UNLOCKED.»
Lucan exhaled.
"You are annoyingly ahead."
Arin stood.
"I’ve noticed."
A deep impact shook the chamber.
Both turned.
Guardian Zero materialized behind them.
The ancient structure groaned beneath its weight.
Its enormous body barely fit inside the buried forest.
«GUARDIAN ZERO SUCCESSFULLY EXTRACTED.
HOUSE ELYSIUM CONNECTION:
REESTABLISHING...»
Arin’s Authority Band came alive.
Messages flooded his vision.
«FAMILY LINK RESTORED.
LYRA:
SAFE.
EVE:
SAFE.
SERENA:
STABLE.
ARK INFANT:
STABLE.»
Relief hit immediately.
Then another alert appeared.
«CAEL ELYSIUM:
STATUS CHANGE DETECTED.»
Arin froze.
"What?"
Lucan stepped closer.
The message continued.
«SUBLEVEL NINE HAS REACTIVATED.
PRISONER RESTRAINTS:
RELEASED.
CAUSE:
GUARDIAN ZERO RETURN.»
Guardian Zero lifted its head.
"Cael."
Arin’s Authority Band flashed red.
A live feed opened from the Central Workshop.
Sublevel Nine.
The cell.
Empty restraints lay on the floor.
Cael stood outside the barrier.
For the first time in thousands of years, he was free.
He looked directly toward the surveillance lens.
Then smiled.
"Arin."
His voice traveled through House Elysium.
"I see you’ve brought my daughter home."
Arin went completely still.
Lucan did too.
Guardian Zero made a sound of confusion.
Cael’s smile slowly disappeared.
"Wait."
His face changed as he looked at something outside the camera’s view.
"No."
The prison alarms erupted.
«UNKNOWN FAMILY SIGNATURE DETECTED.
LOCATION:
SUBLEVEL NINE.»
Another person stepped into the frame.
A woman.
Thin.
Older than Arin remembered, but unmistakable.
Dark hair threaded with silver.
Pale green eyes.
His mother’s eyes.
Elara looked directly into the camera.
And whispered:
"Arin... don’t come down here."
