Jiang Wanyin chatted about everyday things with her boyfriend for a while longer, until Lin Wenhao finally mentioned that he’d recently been pestered by his roommate’s girlfriend’s best friend to attend some event.
This immediately put Jiang Wanyin on alert. Lin Wenhao was a student council officer who frequently participated in various activities.
Although everyone knew he came from a rural background and carried heavy family burdens, Lin Wenhao was nonetheless good-looking and an excellent student.
Being a strong academic performer was a huge plus on campus.
Lin Wenhao said casually, “I’m about to graduate anyway. When would I have time for that?”
Though Jiang Wanyin vaguely sensed something off about the women appearing around Lin Wenhao, the very next day her younger brother Jiang Qi’an fell ill and needed medical expenses, leaving her no time to dig deeper.
Jiang Qi’an fell sick every few days, yet he still managed to get into a key municipal high school. He was both sensible and hardworking.
The bond between brother and sister was deep.
Jiang Wanyin kept only five thousand for emergencies and transferred the rest of her savings—fifty thousand—to her mother.
After handling all that, Jiang Wanyin rushed to the office and sat down at her workstation, pressing a hand to her forehead. The sleepless night had her temples throbbing.
She stared at the 3D house model on her screen, and the image of that golden young gentleman flashed through her mind.
Sigh. Some people were devastatingly handsome and filthy rich to boot.
So enviable that she wanted to grab his suit pants, cry a little, and beg the “golden-haired angel” to sprinkle some cash and toss out a few more projects.
Little did Jiang Wanyin know that one day in the future, that “golden-haired angel” would end up pinned beneath her—”fallen from the heavens.”
…
Determined to secure her commission as quickly as possible, Jiang Wanyin gritted her teeth and worked overtime revising her design drawings. No matter how busy she got, though, she always kept tabs on her boyfriend Lin Wenhao’s progress.
His resume had passed the initial screening at Blueprint Investments, and he was coming to Magic City for an interview.
Jiang Wanyin worked overtime until 2 a.m. the night before, and only the next day did she have time to go pick up Lin Wenhao at the train station and take him to his interview at Blueprint Investments.
“You go on in. I’ll wander around nearby and wait for you.”
After seeing Lin Wenhao off, Jiang Wanyin figured she might as well go back to the car and wait for him.
She walked to the elevator lobby. Of the three elevators, one was under maintenance. Just then, one was descending, so Jiang Wanyin quickly pressed the button.
The elevator doors opened. Jiang Wanyin’s phone buzzed with a message, so she kept her head down and stepped straight in.
Once the elevator started moving, Jiang Wanyin noticed the button for floor B1 was lit, and only then did she sense an exceptionally tall man beside her—at least over 1.9 meters.
The pressure from the height difference made her instinctively shuffle a few steps away.
The elevator descended slowly, and a somewhat appraising gaze fell on Jiang Wanyin.
She tugged uncomfortably at the hem of her cheongsam, covering more of her legs.
Since Lin Wenhao was coming to Magic City today for an interview at such a good company, Jiang Wanyin had brought out that pale green cheongsam again.
Just as Jiang Wanyin was enduring the awkwardness, the elevator suddenly changed its descent speed and plummeted rapidly.
“Ah—”
The jolting elevator threw Jiang Wanyin off balance. Just as she was about to fall, a strong, powerful hand caught her.
“Don’t scream. Lean against the wall and hold on. Bend your knees.”
The man’s voice was cold and firm as he pulled her along to grip the handrail inside the elevator.
With a loud clang, the fall stopped abruptly, but the entire elevator plunged into darkness.
The pitch-black darkness sent cold sweat trickling down Jiang Wanyin’s spine. She asked in a trembling voice, “Wh-what’s going on?”
“Elevator malfunction. At least it didn’t drop too many floors. We just have to wait for someone to come rescue us.”
A cold male voice answered, then took out his phone and made a call: “It’s me. I’m trapped in Elevator No. 1 at Blueprint. Send someone over right away.”
After finishing the call, he tilted his phone slightly and shone it toward her.
“You… you have claustrophobia?”
Jiang Wanyin couldn’t manage a reply. She collapsed onto the floor, clutching her chest and breathing rapidly.
Pei Yunchi turned on the phone’s flashlight, set it face-down on the floor to cast light across the elevator car, then looked back to see the woman sitting on the ground, drenched in sweat, her face flushed red, her breathing growing more labored by the second—on the verge of suffocation.
He made a split-second decision, laid her flat, and leaned down to breathe air into her mouth.
After about a minute of this, the woman’s breathing finally steadied somewhat. Only then did he realize he had just kissed a complete stranger.
Pei Yunchi couldn’t help but study the woman lying on the ground. She wasn’t the striking type—willow-shaped brows, a soft and gentle facial contour that felt pleasant and comforting.
At that moment, her hazy, watery eyes were fixed on him, seemingly full of dependence.
Something stirred faintly in his chest. Pei Yunchi half-lifted her into a sitting position, leaning her against himself.
With a slightly stiff motion, he patted her back gently—the first time he had ever comforted anyone: “Alright, don’t be scared. Look, it’s bright all around us, and I’m here. Nothing scary at all.”
Consider it good karma—maybe he could help her overcome this condition.
Just then, the elevator doors suddenly opened.
“Sir, are you alright!”
“I’m fine.”
Pei Yunchi looked down and saw the woman still hadn’t recovered, so he scooped her up in his arms and walked out of the elevator. “To the hospital.”
“No… no need.”
Jiang Wanyin was weak all over, but her mind was gradually returning to clarity. She spoke slowly: “I… just need to rest.”
“Then find a rest room.”
“Alright, alright, alright. There’s one on this floor. Follow me.”
Pei Yunchi gave a slight nod and followed behind, carrying the woman in his arms.
When they reached the rest room, he laid her horizontally on the sofa, only then noticing that her skirt had ridden up, exposing most of her two straight, fair legs.
Pei Yunchi’s brow furrowed slightly. He shielded her with his body and ordered the others out in a low voice.
“Do you have any strength now? Your… skirt…”
Hearing this, Jiang Wanyin looked down and hastily said with embarrassment: “You… turn around first…”
Her soft, sweet voice was like a little hook, scratching at Pei Yunchi’s heart and leaving his throat dry and itchy.
He turned around, thinking for the first time that women weren’t such an annoying presence after all.
Jiang Wanyin struggled to summon her strength, feeling as though the blood in her body was rushing back into her limbs. Finally, she half-rose and straightened her skirt.
“Alright.”
The man turned back, and only then did she get a clear look at him.
Unexpectedly handsome—absolutely stunning, in fact!
The man was around twenty-eight or twenty-nine, with sharp, piercing brows and eyes, standing there with an imposing bearing that exuded an unspoken arrogance.
His gaze drifted down to her face.
Jiang Wanyin couldn’t avoid meeting his eyes. They were deep and bright, carrying an unfathomable calm and intelligence.
Her internal radar went off again. She simply couldn’t withstand the man’s overwhelming presence. Instinctively, she made small movements to create distance, lowered her gaze, and murmured: “Thank you.”
Pei Yunchi looked down and swept his eyes over the woman, lingering a few seconds on her jade-white legs that were still quite exposed. His fingertips unconsciously rubbed together as he said: “Seems you’re fine now. Once you’ve rested enough, you can leave.”
With that, he turned and walked away without looking back.
Jiang Wanyin let out a silent sigh of relief. That man clearly wasn’t an ordinary person.
She rested for a while, then left the rest room. A middle-aged man was waiting at the door.
Seeing her come out, he smiled very politely: “Miss, are you still feeling unwell?”
Jiang Wanyin shook her head. Her phone rang—it was Lin Wenhao.
“I’m much better now. I have something to take care of, so I’ll be going first.”
She answered the call and walked toward the stairwell: “Hey, are you done?”
When she met up with Lin Wenhao, Jiang Wanyin noticed his expression was no longer as upbeat as it had been at the start. “What’s wrong? Was the interview too hard?”
Lin Wenhao pressed his lips together, and when he spoke, his voice sounded a bit hoarse: “It might… not go so smoothly.”
