A chill crept up from behind.
Almost at the same instant the wind hissed past his ear, Jian Yue rolled sideways in reflex. A sharp gust of air brushed past his cheek, and a red shadow slammed hard into the heavy shelf beside him with a thunderous crash.
Fortunately, the shelf had been backed against the wall, otherwise that blow would have sent the whole thing crashing to the ground.
His flashlight nearly slipped from his grasp. On the other side of the shelf, a low cabinet caught him just in time, keeping him from slamming to the floor. If not for that, he suspected that one fall would have left him unable to get up again.
He turned around.
Jian Yue raised the flashlight and aimed it behind him.
In the beam of cold light, he finally saw what had attacked him. A red figure crouched there, its nails long and razor sharp, its black hair rising as though stirred by an invisible wind of resentment. The last time he had seen her, her face had at least still looked human, clean even. Now her eyes glowed crimson like fresh blood.
That diary, he realized, must have triggered something inside her.
The moment he opened the box, he had angered her.
“You… how are you here?” Jian Yue blurted out in shock. “Weren’t you supposed to be at the ancestral hall?”
The female ghost didn’t answer. Her robes were completely soaked through, stained in a deep, dreadful red. Her gaze locked tightly onto the diary clutched in his hand. When she spoke, her voice was low and hollow, chilling like wind howling through a tomb.
“Where is he… where is he… give him to me…”
Jian Yue thought fast. It must be because the diary carried Ji Feng’s aura. She recognized it.
And judging from the look of her now, she had lost nearly all reason, her killing intent was so thick it almost felt solid in the air.
Just as she spoke, a glowing system panel suddenly appeared before him.

She lunged forward. Jian Yue reacted instantly, sliding to the side. Her nails plunged deep into the wooden floor with a crack. If that blow had struck him, he would’ve been dead before he even had time to scream.
The system timer ticked on: 4 minutes 30 seconds.
Jian Yue backed away quickly. The ghost’s hand was stuck in the table, but he knew that wouldn’t buy much time. She was fast, so fast that even if he ran, she’d catch him halfway.
The room was completely dark. No light except the flashlight, and it wasn’t exactly a weapon.
Cold sweat trickled down his spine.
A deafening crash echoed, she had ripped her hand free. The floor beneath her feet was now a pool of congealed blood. She turned toward him, eyes gleaming like twin red flames, and rushed forward again.
“Wait!” Jian Yue shouted, raising a hand. “You want this diary, right?”
Her voice came again, echoing with madness. “Give it to me… I want to find him…”
Jian Yue nodded rapidly. “Alright, I’ll give it to you.”
The live stream chat instantly exploded with noise.
“Is he insane? He’s really giving it to her?”
“Damn it, my newbie nightmare is back!”
“I was ready for a jump scare but still screamed!”

The ghost seemed momentarily taken aback by his response. Jian Yue smiled slightly and said, “But tell me one thing first. If I give you this diary, can you even read what’s written inside?”
Silence filled the room. Even the chat went quiet.
Only Jian Yue could come up with something like that at a time like this.
The timer continued: 3 minutes 20 seconds.

The ghost froze. She looked down at her own hands, as though confused by the words.
Jian Yue exhaled softly in relief. There was still a chance to stall. Moving as discreetly as he could, he inched toward the staircase while speaking in a gentle tone. “Then it’s settled. I’ll read it to you.”
He opened the first page.
He had already read it once before, so he could recite it easily.
“Year 1752, February 3rd.
Weather: clear.
Received an assignment from the organization to head to Wanfu Village. They say the place is famous for its longevity. Some of the villagers are said to live for more than a hundred years…”
His tone was calm, his voice smooth and even. As he read, the ghost’s wild expression began to soften, her violent aura slowly settling. Jian Yue felt a flicker of hope and continued climbing the stairs while reading.
“Year 1753, February 4th.
Weather: cloudy.
Xiao Yue doesn’t agree with me going to Wanfu Village. She says that place is dangerous…”
He had barely finished the line when the ghost’s face twisted. Blood poured from her eyes, streaking down her cheeks. She screamed and lunged toward him.
“Damn it!” Jian Yue cursed. Standing midway up the staircase, he saw her claws reaching for his wrist. At the last second, he hurled the flashlight downward with all his strength.
A heavy thud resounded. The ghost lost her footing and tumbled down several steps.
Darkness swallowed the room as the flashlight shattered. Jian Yue didn’t dare hesitate. He sprinted upward, heart hammering. Behind him came the thunderous sound of impact after impact, the ghost was raging, shaking the entire staircase.
Light appeared above.
At the top of the stairs, Tiantian was leaning over, peering down in fear and confusion. When she saw Jian Yue, her eyes lit up. “Brother!”
Jian Yue scrambled up the last few steps. Just as he was about to reach the top, something clamped around his ankle and yanked hard. He was dragged back.
A small hand shot out and caught his wrist, Tiantian’s. Half her body dangled over the edge as she shouted, “Butler Wang!”
With her help, Jian Yue finally managed to haul himself up. He slammed the wooden hatch shut behind him and collapsed onto the floor, panting heavily.
Tiantian was pale with fright. “Brother Wang, what happened? Why did you suddenly go silent down there?”
Jian Yue was still catching his breath. He patted his chest and gasped, “I… I ran into that female ghost again. I found a diary, and she wanted to kill me for it. I had to come up with something to stall her… just to get out.”
Tiantian stared wide-eyed. “Brother, you actually dared to trick her?”
Jian Yue sat on the floor and said, “How can you call that tricking? I’ll give her the diary, sure, but at least let me finish reading it first. It’s just a temporary plan. People change, reputations change. The past is the past. Now…”
He stopped mid-sentence.
Puzzled, Tiantian followed his gaze, and froze.
The wooden hatch behind them was soaked in blood. The surface began to rot and melt away, and from beneath it, a red shadow slowly rose.
Their eyes met.
When Tiantian’s gaze locked onto those crimson, bleeding pupils, she went completely rigid. Her lips trembled as she turned to Jian Yue and forced out a smile uglier than crying. “Brother Wang… she’s up here now. What do we do?”
Jian Yue, surprisingly, looked much calmer. He took a deep breath, gave both women a wry smile, and shouted, “What else can we do? Stop standing there, grab your cards and run!”
In the old mansion’s study, a flock of birds suddenly burst from the back garden.
Shen Yushu turned slightly toward the window, frowning.
On his desk, the computer screen glowed with a video call. The man on the other end was laughing. “From the way you talk, it sounds like that butler of yours treats you pretty well. You’ve been alone all these years. If you’ve found someone who suits your taste, why not keep him? Once your mother’s health improves, bring him back to City A and make it official.”
Shen Yushu withdrew his gaze from the window, his tone cool and distant. “I’ve never considered workplace romance. It’s improper and beneath my dignity.”
The man on the screen chuckled. “If he becomes your husband, he won’t be your subordinate anymore. Stop pushing him away. If you reject him too many times and he stops liking you, you’ll regret it later.”
Shen Yushu’s eyes glinted coldly, his expression tinged with disdain. He tilted his sharp, elegant chin slightly. “Hmph. Foolish mortals.”
He was about to say more, When a loud crash echoed from outside.
The sound wasn’t small. It was sharp, jarring, and carried a faint, all too familiar cry. Shen Yushu paused, frowning as he listened carefully.
He rose from his chair and strode out of the study, only to freeze in disbelief.
On the grass outside the corridor lay Jian Yue and a young girl, both rumpled and disheveled, tangled together in a heap. When they heard the door open, Jian Yue turned toward him, face still pale with shock.
Oh no.
The teleportation card had sent them here?!
He looked up just in time to see Shen Yushu’s expression darken, his face turning an ominous shade.
“Master, I can explain… ” Jian Yue began.
“Butler Wang.”
Shen Yushu cut him off sharply. The tall man’s handsome features were tense, his hand trembling slightly as he pointed at Jian Yue, disbelief flashing in his eyes.
Jian Yue thought he was about to scold him for slacking off during work hours. He was already trying to come up with an excuse that might convince his young master he had actually been working diligently in the storage room.
But instead, Shen Yushu stood there in the doorway like a furious husband catching an affair, his voice trembling with anger.
“You… you actually dared to cheat on me? You’re stepping on two boats? Damn it, Wang, what do you take me for?!”
