Jian Yue was stunned when he heard those words. He raised his head in disbelief to look at Shen Yushu.
Before Shen Yushu could say another word, Jian Yue had already scrambled up from the ground. He didn’t even have time to care about his messy and dirt-stained appearance before stepping forward indignantly.
“Young Master! How could you doubt my loyalty to you?”
Shen Yushu blinked.
Jian Yue’s expression was one of wounded pride, his voice rising as though he were the one being wronged. “I swear, I have absolutely nothing to do with that archaeology team!”
His tone was so aggrieved it almost sounded like he was the one who had been betrayed. The boss actually thought he was colluding with those people with the scar-faced man? That could very well cost him his monthly bonus! He stood up straight, eyes filled with earnest determination. “I have always been loyal to you alone, Young Master. I have never had a divided heart!”
Shen Yushu hadn’t expected such a passionate outburst. For a moment, he even began to wonder, had he truly misunderstood?
Shen Yushu wasn’t a man prone to impulsive conclusions. He narrowed his eyes slightly, then turned his gaze toward Tiantian, who stood trembling a few steps behind. “Then tell me,” he said calmly, “Why were the two of you rolling around on the lawn?”
Jian Yue turned his head sharply toward Tiantian, who still looked as though she hadn’t quite recovered from her fright. Shen Yushu’s presence was too imposing; when he wasn’t smiling, the natural weight of his aura made people instinctively shrink back. With her eyes red and watery, Tiantian stammered, “I… I was trying to run away with Butler Wang.”
What!
Jian Yue was completely dumbfounded. This child, why did she have to be so honest? If the boss thought he was slacking off, his bonus would really be gone!
Shen Yushu narrowed his eyes slightly. “Run away? Run from what?”
Tiantian’s voice trembled. “Because… because there’s something…Dirty… in the storage room…”
Jian Yue’s heart gave a violent jolt. Oh no. The Young Master was a staunch materialist. If she kept talking about ghosts, she might end up getting sent to a psychiatric ward!
Sure enough, Shen Yushu turned back toward him, expression cool and sharp. Jian Yue’s palms began to sweat as he waited for the verdict.
“Butler Wang,” Shen Yushu said coldly, “If the storage room isn’t clean, then send more people to tidy it up. Why would you send only a young girl to handle it? You scared her so badly she’s crying!”
“…”
Of course. The unshakable materialist speaks again.
Jian Yue swallowed back a sigh and answered dutifully, “Yes, Young Master.”
Now Shen Yushu finally understood why the two of them looked so dirty and disheveled, especially Jian Yue, who was covered in streaks of black and white as though he’d been rolling around in the mud.
He had suspected that the butler might have been hiding something, but seeing them now, it seemed they really had just been cleaning the storage room. He had been overthinking.
Still, Shen Yushu frowned slightly. “Go wash up,” he said with a hint of distaste. “What kind of appearance is this? You look completely unpresentable.”
Jian Yue had just breathed a sigh of relief and was about to check the diary he had brought back when he suddenly realized that it was faintly warm to the touch. The system interface was flashing before his eyes.
[Timed Mission: Diary Defense Battle]
Remaining time: 45 seconds
A chill ran down his spine. Something was definitely wrong. When he lowered his gaze, he saw that the diary had begun to change before his very eyes. Ever since he had left the storage room, the pages had started to decay and crumble.
The first few pages were already soaked in dark red blood, and the color was spreading fast, staining the rest until the writing was nearly impossible to read.
It was only then that Jian Yue finally understood the purpose of the countdown.
The storage room must have some kind of unique magnetic field. That was why all the archaeological items had remained intact for centuries, aged, but not rotten.
Once removed from that space, however, the preservation barrier broke, and everything began to corrode and transform. But if the players stayed inside, the female ghost would relentlessly hunt them down. The only way to clear the mission was to read the entire diary within five minutes while escaping her pursuit.
Damn it.
Jian Yue felt close to collapse. Of course the system’s task was never simple. This diary was likely a key prop for the mission’s progress, something he had spent enormous effort to obtain. If it was destroyed, who knew when the next clue would appear?
The blood-red numbers on the system interface continued their merciless countdown.
[Timed Mission: Diary Defense Battle]
Remaining time: 31 seconds
The scarlet seepage was spreading faster and faster, swallowing up the paper entirely. Even if he began reading now, there was no way he could finish in half a minute. It was an impossible mission from the very start.
The viewers in the live stream chat were in an uproar.
“The streamer finally noticed.”
“That warehouse instance is pure despair for newbies.”
“If only he had an item that could restore things or freeze time.”
“My gold card would be useless here too.”
“He’s doomed. All that effort was for nothing!”
As the countdown ticked down to its final seconds, the corruption spread like wildfire. Jian Yue broke into a cold sweat. Without thinking, he blurted out, “Young Master!”
Shen Yushu turned to look at him, eyebrows raised in mild confusion. “What is it now?”
“I… I…” Jian Yue’s mind was spinning as he scrambled for an excuse. At last he seized on one and said in a rush, “Young Master, I made some discoveries in the storage room. This diary is one of them!”
Shen Yushu’s attention immediately shifted. He reached out, and Jian Yue quickly placed the diary into his hand.
The instant the diary touched Shen Yushu’s fingers, the bloodlike stains froze. The crimson color stopped spreading, caught awkwardly between dark and light, no longer daring to move.
Shen Yushu frowned slightly. “Why are several of the pages red?”
He flipped through a few more, his long, defined fingers brushing over the edges of the paper. His sharp, dark eyes gleamed with analytical focus, as if he was determined to find a reasonable explanation.
While Shen Yushu examined it, Jian Yue sneaked a glance at the diary. Under the sunlight, it seemed pitifully meek in the Young Master’s hands, utterly different from the malicious thing it had been a moment ago.
The once defiant diary now looked as though it were trembling, terrified that Shen Yushu might actually send it to a lab for scientific analysis.
Even the live chat erupted in laughter.
“The diary’s gone completely tame. Begging for mercy now.”
“No one dares to act up in front of President Shen.”
“Damn, even cursed objects behave around him!”
“Using the system’s logic to beat the system itself, brilliant!”
In the rules of the dungeon world, players couldn’t act against their assigned character roles, and supernatural entities couldn’t behave in ways that violated the setting either.
That meant all items and ghosts were bound by the same limitations but since most NPCs and spirits were hostile toward players, no one had ever dared to try exploiting that rule.
And yet, it worked.
When the countdown hit zero, the system chimed softly.
[Timed Mission: Diary Defense Battle Completed]
[Reward: 300 Mall Points]
The moment the mission ended and the diary remained safe in Shen Yushu’s hand, Jian Yue exhaled in relief. He had bet correctly.
Nothing could act up before a true believer in materialism, not even a haunted diary.
“Young Master,” Jian Yue said quickly, “On the second floor of the warehouse, I found some things left behind by the previous archaeological team. This diary was one of them. The place had been sealed off for a long time. There’s a closed chamber below, no light, no exit. When I went down there, I found boxes that seemed to contain data left by the archaeologists. I think it might be useful for treating Madam’s illness.”
He had thought this through carefully. There were certainly more clues hidden in that warehouse. But after what had happened, he really couldn’t bring himself to go back alone. Handing it over to the archaeologists was risky, they might not share their findings.
All things considered, entrusting it to Shen Yushu was the safest choice.
Sure enough, Shen Yushu frowned slightly. “There are more items down there?”
“Yes, Young Master,” Jian Yue said eagerly. He looked at him with eyes full of sincerity, hoping the boss could see his devotion. He wasn’t slacking off; he was working hard, truly, diligently, wholeheartedly!
However,
After a moment of contemplation, Shen Yushu glanced at him again and said, “So that’s why you ended up in such a filthy state? Because you went down into that chamber?”
Jian Yue nodded earnestly. “This is only what I should do, young master!” he said, his tone full of sincerity. Inwardly, he thought with some relief that surely the young master would no longer doubt his loyalty after this.
Shen Yushu’s expression became somewhat complicated as he looked at him. He hadn’t expected his butler to be so wholeheartedly devoted, to the point of making himself look so disheveled and dirty.
Even if it was all for his sake, he should not be neglecting his own body like this. What a troublesome little creature he was.
A quiet curse escaped Shen Yushu’s lips. He turned his head slightly, his sharp brows furrowing. His deep, magnetic voice carried a low edge of irritation. “You’re playing with fire.”
“Eh?” Jian Yue blinked, a question mark practically hanging over his head. What did that mean? Was the boss blaming him for being too impulsive, for taking unnecessary risks?
He hurried to defend himself. “Young master, you’ve always treated me so well. Doing these little things for you is nothing at all! As long as you don’t misunderstand my devotion, I’ll be satisfied. I’ll go wash up first, then come to you and give you a full report.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the system chimed softly in his mind.
【Health value increased by 15%. Current health at 20%, returning to stable range.】
Excellent. Jian Yue almost wanted to laugh in relief. He knew it, flattery always paid off.
He was just about to head out when Shen Yushu’s calm voice cut through the air. “Butler Wang, come with me.”
Jian Yue froze for half a second before replying instinctively, “Yes, young master. Why don’t you return to your study first? I’ll be there shortly.”
Once Shen Yushu left, Jian Yue turns toward Tian Tain with serious look on his face.
The viewers in the live stream were expecting some kind of plot twist, but instead they watched as Jian Yue crouched down and extended a hand to her. “Come now, get up. The ground’s cold.”
Tian Tian still hadn’t fully recovered from the fear of what had just happened. Her wide eyes blinked blankly at him. Jian Yue sighed and gently lifted her arm, pressing a few points on it with his fingers. She gasped softly at the brief pain, but afterward, the sharp pounding in her chest eased.
Tears welled in her eyes as she looked up at him. “Butler Wang, why are you always so good to me?” she whispered.
She hadn’t even had time to feel properly moved when Jian Yue replied in all seriousness, “Because you’re the only one in this dungeon who has a teleportation skill. It’s more convenient to run away that way.”
Tian Tian stared at him for a long moment, then muttered faintly, “Oh.”
Jian Yue patted the dust off his sleeves. “Go back first. The diary’s with me now, so she won’t come after you. But there’s one thing I need to warn you about, those scar-faced man around you, I suspect something’s wrong with them. If you can, stay away from them.”
Ordinarily, Jian Yue wouldn’t bother meddling in other people’s business. But she had, after all, saved his life in the warehouse. Even if their cooperation was a matter of convenience, a debt was still a debt.
This warning was his way of returning that favor. Whether she believed him or not afterward would be her own choice, it no longer had anything to do with him.
The audience watching the live broadcast grew emotional.
“The streamer’s actually kind of nice.”
“I just hope they don’t turn around and betray him.”
“It’s tough being alone in a dungeon.”
“Not really. He still has Shen the Almighty CEO.”
“Hahaha! Oh, that’s rich!”
Completely unaware of their chatter, Jian Yue straightened his clothes and went to the study. He knocked politely on the door. “Young master, may I come in?”
“Come in,” Shen Yushu’s smooth voice replied from inside.
The room was bright and airy, filled with the faint scent of old paper and cedar. Shen Yushu’s study always carried a certain sense of calm authority that made one unconsciously straighten their posture.
Shen Yushu gestured to him. “Come here.”
Jian Yue stepped forward and saw that Shen Yushu was holding the diary. The man had clearly read through part of it already. “Have you read this diary?” he asked.
“I’ve only skimmed a little,” Jian Yue answered honestly. “Didn’t finish it.”
“Then read it.” Shen Yushu handed him the book.
Jian Yue had been dying to go through it properly. Taking the diary, he settled down by the window and began to read.
Thankfully, the red stains had only ruined the first few pages, which recorded trivial daily life after the archaeological team had just arrived at the village. The later entries were mostly intact.
March 7, 1753.
Weather: Cloudy.
Someone in our team has gone missing. No one knows where he went, and everyone is quite downhearted. But on this very day, I made progress in my research. It gave everyone some hope again. I believe that soon, we will uncover the secret behind the longevity of Wanfu Village.
March 9, 1753.
Weather: Overcast.
The village chief and his wife had an argument. It seemed to be over some personal matter. The chief has stopped lending us lanterns, so now we borrow them from the other villagers. Oddly enough, I’ve started hearing strange noises outside my window at night. Still, my research is going well. Yue says I’ve been working too hard and that I should rest. We’ve decided to take a walk in the mountains to clear our minds.
March 12, 1753.
Weather: Cloudy.
We saw it. We finally saw it! On the mountain, we witnessed a miracle, this is the secret we’ve been searching for all along!
Jian Yue’s heart clenched as he read. He turned the page quickly, eager to see what came next, but his hands froze. The pages ended there. The back half of the diary was gone. Judging by the thickness of the remaining binding, there had definitely been more pages once, but they had vanished entirely.
Shen Yushu asked, “Finished reading?”
“Yes.” Jian Yue nodded.
“Did you notice anything unusual?” Shen Yushu’s tone grew more serious.
Jian Yue frowned and pondered for a moment before replying solemnly, “Young master, don’t you think…”
“Think what?” Shen Yushu prompted.
“Think that this book is really poor quality? The pages just fall out halfway through!”
Shen Yushu fell silent for a long beat. Finally, he exhaled through his nose. ‘Forget it. He’s my butler. I’ll let it go’
After a pause to compose himself, Shen Yushu continued evenly, “These missing pages were torn out long ago.”
Jian Yue nodded quickly, then straightened abruptly, as if remembering something vital. “It wasn’t me who tore them out!”
A vein twitched at Shen Yushu’s temple. He fought down the urge to hit him. “Of course it wasn’t. Anyone with half a brain can see the tears are centuries old.”
Jian Yue cleared his throat and smiled sheepishly. “Young master is wise.”
Well, it wasn’t his fault his boss was always suspicious, he had to make sure to prove his innocence somehow.
Shen Yushu’s expression grew serious again, his natural aura of command returning in full force. “This Ji Feng,” he said, “he must have discovered the secret to the village’s longevity.”
Jian Yue nodded. “It seems that way but it’s a shame the clues end here.”
Shen Yushu’s lips curved in a cold, knowing smile. “Who said they end here?”
Jian Yue blinked. “What do you mean?”
“Look more closely at the last page,” Shen Yushu said, his eyes narrowing. “At the final entry.”
Puzzled, Jian Yue leaned in and examined it again. At first glance, nothing seemed strange. The ink was faded, the handwriting a little shaky, typical for something written two centuries ago.
But as he looked again and again, something began to feel wrong. His breath hitched. A creeping chill traced its way up his spine and settled in his chest.
The handwriting was subtly different. The ink’s texture, the smoothness of the strokes, it wasn’t from a fountain pen like before. It looked like it had been written with a ballpoint pen.
And the problem was obvious.
“Ballpoint pens were first introduced in China around 1948,” Jian Yue said slowly, his voice trembling. “But this diary was supposedly written in 1753. That’s more than two hundred years apart. Which means… Ji Feng was still alive!”
No human in recorded history had lived that long.
Shen Yushu’s expression darkened into a faint smile. “Then it seems he truly did find the way to eternal life.”
“But why,” Jian Yue asked, “Did he only come back to write in the diary after more than two centuries? He used to write every day.”
Unless…
Something happened during that mountain outing that prevented him from returning, or from being human anymore.
The viewers watching the stream were losing their minds.
“Oh my god, did Shen the CEO just help the player analyze the plot?”
“The streamer giving the diary to the NPC was pure genius!”
“At this point, ghosts showing up don’t even surprise me anymore.”
At the same moment, Jian Yue’s system panel lit up again.
【Main Quest: The Secret of Wanfu Village – Progress 40%】
Forty percent. His gamble with the diary had paid off after all. One risky mission had propelled the story forward faster than ever. Yet the more the truth surfaced, the more tangled everything became.
What exactly was the relationship between Ji Feng and the female ghost? Why did she want to find him so badly? Were they lovers? Could the ghost be Yue?
Jian Yue couldn’t shake the feeling that he had overlooked something critical.
As he was lost in thought, Shen Yushu’s composed voice broke through the silence. “Tomorrow I’ll have people move everything out of that warehouse. Within three days, I want all his research data on my desk.”
“Three days?” Jian Yue’s eyes widened. “Young master, isn’t that a bit rushed?”
Ah, the cruelty of capitalism.
Shen Yushu’s sharp gaze cut toward him, cold and imperious. “You are the first man who’s ever dared to question the efficiency of my intelligence network. Butler Wang, you truly have no idea what real power looks like.”
Wait, so he wasn’t the one being told to do it?
“Truly, young master?” Jian Yue’s face lit up instantly. He straightened his posture and said earnestly, “I was short-sighted. The young master’s wisdom is beyond comparison!”
Finally, Shen Yushu’s expression softened ever so slightly. “Good. Now go wash up. You look absolutely disgraceful. And one more thing…”
Jian Yue looked at him, puzzled, wondering if the boss still had more instructions for him.
Shen Yushu, who was usually the picture of an aloof and domineering CEO, the kind of man who seemed to look at people from the height of his own chin, unexpectedly turned his head away. His voice was calm and faint.
“Put on my coat. The back of your shirt is torn. You should pay more attention to yourself in the future. Don’t disregard your own body just because of me.”
Jian Yue froze, stunned for a moment.
Honestly, he never thought the boss would care about him in that way. He had barely escaped from the ghost’s grasp last night; there hadn’t been any time to think.
Fear was fear, but after so many years of relying only on himself, no matter what he faced, he had grown used to handling everything alone.
He felt an unfamiliar warmth rise in his chest, yet he still said softly, “It’s alright, Young Master. Even if the back’s torn a bit, I’m only walking a short way back. There’s no need for the coat.”
Shen Yushu’s tone turned authoritative. “When I tell you to take it, you take it. As my butler, you should always maintain your appearance. Going out with disheveled clothes and clinging to others, what kind of conduct is that supposed to be?”
Jian Yue was speechless.
Was the person he was talking about really him?
He wanted to argue, but the sharp, commanding look in Shen Yushu’s eyes made him swallow his words. Forget it. As long as the boss was happy, that was all that mattered.
