THE NEXT MORNING…
BECKY
As I entered my car, ready for school, “Morning, Mr.
Daniels,” I said cheerfully to the driver.
He blinked at me in mild surprise.
“M-morning Miss Adams.” He replied, still looking surprised.
Well, I didn’t mind.
Usually I never bothered greeting people outside my social circle, especially, low class like him, and he knew that.
But today was different.
I was in a good mood today.
And when the car stopped I opened the door first, and, “have a good day, Mr.
Daniels.” I said over his shocked face and stepped out first.
Adjusting the strap of my designer backpack I crossed the campus entrance.
Can’t wait for the day to roll!
Since childhood I had never had to bother with anything.
I had gotten things even before I desired for it.
As my father was one of the government officials of the city and had a name in the list of wealthy businessmen in the Mott Haven, he had been one of the trustees of Bronx City High School.
Most teachers treated me carefully, including the principal.
Most students admired me, and I know some were even jealous of me…
I couldn’t help but smile.
Well, they should.
And the few who didn’t learn pretty quickly, and tried to act smart, usually ended badly…
My eyes moved across the school group and found the face I was searching for.
Damon Holmes— the school’s famous and most handsome boy, and my boyfriend.
I couldn’t help but smile brightly at the thought.
His father was the Deputy Mayor of the city, a man who appeared on the news beside important figures almost every week.
Damon himself is popular in school, captain of the football team.
He was envied by boys and desired by girls, but to me, none of them mattered as he was already mine.
The only boy truly deserved me.
Whenever anyone tried to reach him, I made sure she knew who he was with…
“Hey,” I called out as I walked toward him, my smile widening.
“Hey, Morning, Becky.” He greeted me with an easy grin.
I immediately pulled him to a hug and kissed him on his lips, putting my claim.
And that drove the girls off who were gawking at him.
As we walked into the building together, I felt perfectly satisfied with how things were going.
I was the happiest girl alive!
But until— I stepped into the classroom.
My eyes scanned the rows of desks automatically.
And then— I froze.
Veronica…
She was sitting in her usual place. Follow the newest chapters on g.com.
The worst part?
She looked completely fine!
Not even scratches!
How— how was this even possible?
For a moment I simply stared at her in disbelief.
Those gangsters had taken such a hefty amount of my money, and yet, here she was, sitting there calmly like nothing had happened?
Those dumb fuckers!
My mood ruined and that followed every class in the morning!
Worse part— she didn’t even bother glancing at my way?
What the hell did they do with my money!?
By lunchtime, I couldn’t ignore it anymore.
I left the cafeteria and headed toward the street behind the school where those idiots usually hung around.
When I turned the corner and finally found them, the sight in front of me made me stop cold…
Every single one of them looked worse than I expected.
Bandages wrapped around their arms.
Bruises darkened their faces.
One of them even had his arm hanging in a sling.
“What the hell happened to you guys?!” I hissed.
They paused and then looked at me.
Soon, their faces contorted with— anger is that what I see?
“You really got some nerve asking that, girl.” their leader snapped.
“That psycho girl you told us to scare?
She nearly broke half our bones!”
I blinked at him in disbelief.
What?!
Veronica did what!?
“Were you drunk when chasing her?” I couldn’t control my temper anymore.
These idiots must have gotten drunk and fooled somewhere else.
Because it was impossible for Veronica to beat them up.
“Shut up!” The leader guy suddenly snapped again.
“You told us it’d be easy.
Next thing we know we’re getting thrown around like punching bags!” Bitterness dripped from his voice.
“You lied!
Or clearly had no idea who you’re dealing with!”
The argument quickly grew louder.
And before I knew, a few curious students started gathering nearby, whispering as they watched.
“Now you owe us,” the leader continued angrily.
“Hospital bills ain’t cheap, girl.
Pay us, or we’ll be going to your father.”
“I never hired you to do anything,” I said quickly, noticing more students arriving.
But the situation had already attracted too much attention.
The crowd suddenly got louder and that even brought the school principal.
Damn it!
“What is going on here?” he asked sternly.
I forced a confident smile.
“These men— they’re accusing me, sir,” I said smoothly.
“They want my dad’s money, so they’re lying.” I played my innocent card.
“Funny,” The leader snorted and suddenly pulled out his phone, holding the screen up.
“We’ve got the messages right here!”
No!
Shit!
The screen clearly showed the texts I had sent after getting their number from that bathroom girl!
Around us, students gasped.
The principal looked shocked.
In fact, Damon appeared as well and watched me in disbelief.
More and more people gathered, their whispers spreading through the crowd like wildfire.
Damn it!
No!
Fuck you, Veronica!
___________
IN THE CANTEEN…
VERONICA
I sat quietly at the quiet corner of the bustling cafeteria with Ethan, eating our lunch slowly while the chaos of voices and laughter filled the room.
Ethan looked around, then watched me for a moment before finally speaking.
“Yo-ou’re not ev-ven cc-curious?” he asked, nodding toward the large crowd gathering near the windows where everyone seemed to be whispering excitedly.
“About what?” I asked leisurely, not raising my head.
“The dd-drama outside,” he said excitedly.
“H-half the ss-chool’s over t-there.”
“Sounds boring to me.” I shrugged slightly and took another bite.
Ethan blinked.
“Rr-really?” He looked confused.
Because, usually like other kids Veronica would be curious as well, unlike Savanna.
I finally lifted my eyes toward him.
“If you’re really that interested, maybe I’ll invite you to watch something more entertaining later?”
Ethan blinked again, then, slowly, leaned back, studying my face.
I raised a brow, biting on the ham, “what’s wrong?”
“Y-you l-look dd-different V-vero.” He said slowly.
“Yo-ou got thin-ner.”
“Yeah?” my lips curved faintly.
“Do I look beautiful now?”
His smile grew larger, “M-my V-vero is al-lways b-beautiful!” He sounded proud and happy for his sister.
Well, and that was more important to me than some spoiled piece of junk.
I hoped you were happy as well, Veronica.
Rest in peace now, I’d take care of your body and your family, I promise…
