The warm breath fanned against Lu Shian’s ear, making his throat tighten. His chest felt an uncontrollable sense of stuffiness and pain. The possessiveness in Meng Yu’s words was blatant; in this moment, Lu Shian felt as if he had become Meng Yu’s personal property.
A flush of crimson spread uncontrollably across his cheeks and neck. He turned his head to look at Meng Yu, his pupils trembling with utter disbelief.
“I am not lying to you,” Meng Yu said, his lips curling slightly as he whispered the name of the hotel.
Then, he watched as Lu Shian’s mouth twitched and his expression soured. He looked as if he might actually hit someone.
Qi Lei and Song Yunchuan stood a short distance away, unable to hear the hushed conversation. From their perspective, the two were standing so close that as Meng Yu leaned down, it looked as though he was kissing Lu Shian.
“I am sorry for hurting you that night. I truly apologize,” Meng Yu said, dropping his playful tone and offering a sincere, serious apology.
A flame of rage ignited in Lu Shian’s eyes. “I will f”
Meng Yu quickly raised a hand to cover Lu Shian’s lips, blocking the curse. “President Lu is a dignified man. Do not use such vulgar language to scold people.”
Lu Shian immediately lifted his uninjured right hand, sending the laptop on his lap sliding down with the movement. Meng Yu caught Lu Shian’s hand before he could strike, coaxing him softly, “You cannot hit me now. You need quiet rest.”
Qi Lei finally sensed the strange tension between the two. He rushed to the bedside and asked a red-faced Lu Shian, “President Lu, what happened?”
Lu Shian pulled his hand away and forced himself to suppress his emotions. He commanded coldly, “Please show Doctor Meng out.”
Qi Lei turned to Meng Yu and said tactfully, “Doctor Meng, President Lu is tired and needs to rest.”
“Alright,” Meng Yu replied. Since Lu Shian was a patient, he did not want to provoke him further. “Rest well, President Lu. See you tomorrow morning.”
With that, he walked out and closed the door.
Meng Yu had worked the late shift the night before, leaving the hospital at midnight, yet he arrived back punctually before eight the next morning. He ran into Tang Linyan in the elevator, and they went up together.
As they passed the nurses’ station, Meng Yu instinctively stopped when he heard the nurses talking. Tang Linyan, confused, stopped as well.
“Did you know? The handsome guy who got beaten up yesterday is the Chairman of Fangsheng Group. Heavens, I have only seen him on the news before. He is so handsome in person! I caught a glimpse of him leaving his room yesterday. He is probably the only man who could look that good even with a bald patch on the back of his head!” Although the girl kept her voice low, the excitement was obvious.
The youngest nurse, Xiao Dong, chimed in immediately. “What is the use of being handsome? He looks ice-cold and ruthless. Have you forgotten? The old Chairman of Fangsheng is still lying in our rehabilitation department.”
“True. He has been there for two years, and not a single person from the Lu family has visited. As a son, he is truly cold-hearted.”
“I have some inside information. Do you want to hear it?” Xiao Dong leaned in and asked mysteriously.
“Yes, yes!” The other two were eager for gossip.
“My cousin works at Fangsheng Group. She told me the old Chairman had his power stripped by President Lu, which made him so angry he had a stroke and became paralyzed.”
The fangirl who had praised Lu Shian earlier immediately defended him. “Even if President Lu did strip his father of power, it is no big deal. The old Chairman was just a son-in-law who married into the family. Fangsheng is a Lu family business through and through. It is only natural for President Lu to take over.”
“Fine, just keep being starstruck!”
Tang Linyan, who had been listening, finally understood. He stepped forward and asked, “Are you talking about the President Lu who was beaten up yesterday? Has he been transferred to our department?”
Tang Linyan had left early yesterday and did not know about the transfer.
“Yes,” the nurses replied in unison.
“Tsk,” Tang Linyan clicked his tongue. “No wonder he acts so arrogant. So he is the Chairman of Fangsheng.”
One of the nurses teased, “Do you not watch the news?”
Tang Linyan scoffed. “Why would someone my age watch the news?”
“Ahem.” Meng Yu, who had been eavesdropping from the side, stepped forward. He tapped his watch to remind them. “Ladies, it is seven fifty-nine. Gossip time is over. Time to work.”
“Yes, Doctor Meng,” the three nurses replied with sweet smiles.
Meng Yu was the star doctor of the hospital; he was good-tempered, professional, and handsome. Most of the unmarried female doctors and nurses had feelings for him. Everyone was happy to listen to what he had to say.
Meng Yu started toward his office but stopped and turned back after a few steps.
“Xiao Dong,” he called out to the youngest nurse who had shared the gossip.
Nurse Dong replied cheerfully, “What is it, Doctor Meng?”
“Misfortune comes from the mouth. Do not say such things again next time,” he said, before entering his office.
After putting on his white coat, Meng Yu went to do his rounds as usual. As he left the office, Tang Linyan blocked his path. “Master, let me join you for rounds today.”
Meng Yu asked, “What are you planning?”
“I just want to see that bald Chairman,” Tang Linyan said, suppressed laughter in his voice. “Was he not acting tough? In the end, he still ended up in our department.”
Meng Yu asked, “Do you want to go mock him?”
“Not exactly. I just think the look on his face when he sees the two of us will be very interesting.”
“No,” Meng Yu rejected him flatly. He then reminded him, “Medical staff encounter all sorts of people in their daily work. You must first have patience with patients, followed by tolerance and understanding. Never have the mindset of laughing at a patient again. Go back to the office and review the materials I gave you yesterday.”
Tang Linyan’s face fell instantly. “Master, I have read those materials several times. I can recite them backward.”
“Then wait for me to come back and recite them backward for me,” Meng Yu said, leaving a cool silhouette as he walked away.
Meng Yu’s patients, regardless of age or gender, liked him. He was gentle, approachable, and handsome. Every time he did rounds, young girls would try to chat with him until they blushed. Older uncles and aunts would pull out their phones to show him photos of eligible women they knew, trying to arrange a match for him. His rounds always took longer than anyone else’s.
By the time he reached Lu Shian’s VIP ward, the deputy director of Neurosurgery was just leaving. They greeted each other and briefly discussed Lu Shian’s condition before Meng Yu walked straight inside.
