Gu Nuan had no idea what Chen Qingzhou was thinking, but as she looked at the fully grown vegetables and the ripe fruit hanging in the orchard, an idea suddenly came to her.
Since Chen Qingzhou was here, he could get to work.
After all, she had “fed” him well today, so he ought to do a little more labour.
“Husband, why don’t you harvest all the vegetables and fruit? Everything looks ripe. Once you’ve picked them, we can plant something else.”
“Alright.”
Carrying a set of tools, Chen Qingzhou headed for the vegetable garden. He started by digging up the potatoes, harvesting three large baskets. Then he picked the leafy greens, tomatoes, chillies, pumpkins, and cucumbers. After gathering everything, he loosened the soil before moving on to the orchard.
He harvested two baskets of apples and another two baskets of peaches.
Basket by basket, Chen Qingzhou carried the harvest into the rooms on the second floor of the villa, where Gu Nuan had specially converted two rooms into storage warehouses.
“Thanks for your hard work. Have some water.”
Gu Nuan handed him a bottle of water and gently wiped the sweat from his forehead.
“It wasn’t hard at all. I’m happy to be of service to my wife.”
He deliberately emphasized the words be of service, making Gu Nuan cough awkwardly.
“Well… then you can plant these seeds too.”
She handed him seeds for eggplants, Chinese cabbage, and sunflowers. Suddenly, she found herself craving braised eggplant casserole and roasted sunflower seeds.
By the time they finished working and left the System Space, it was almost evening. Gu Nuan hurried off to prepare dinner.
That night’s meal consisted of braised beef with tomatoes, stir fried pork with mushrooms, and a cold vegetable salad served with steamed rice.
Using the peaches they had harvested that day, she also made fresh peach juice.
It tasted absolutely delicious.
She called Chen Qingzhou over for dinner.
After taking a bite of the braised beef with tomatoes, Chen Qingzhou couldn’t stop praising her.
“Nuan Nuan, your cooking has improved again. This is incredible.”
“As long as you like it, eat more.”
Gu Nuan placed another piece of beef into his bowl.
Who didn’t enjoy being complimented, especially by the person they loved? A blissful smile spread across her face.
Perhaps it was because she wanted to make up for the regrets of her previous life. Gu Nuan treated Chen Qingzhou with exceptional tenderness. She had failed to appreciate his devotion back then, so this lifetime she intended to make up for it.
After dinner, the two of them watched a movie together before going to bed.
The next morning, once Chen Qingzhou saw that most of the snow had melted, he called Xia Tian and the other two men to help clear the fallen rocks.
When they arrived, they discovered there weren’t actually that many rocks. The real problem was a single enormous boulder blocking the way.
After thinking for a moment, Chen Qingzhou decided to use the same kind of strategy they employed against zombies.
They would surround the boulder with earth walls, then he would shatter it using his lightning ability.
After explaining his plan, Sun Zecheng volunteered immediately.
Using his earth ability, he raised a ring of earth walls around the massive rock. Chen Qingzhou climbed onto a higher spot and unleashed a bolt of lightning straight down.
A thunderous boom echoed through the area.
The earth walls collapsed, and the huge boulder shattered into countless pieces.
“That’s amazing!”
Xia Tian and the others admired Chen Qingzhou even more now. Although he was young, he was unbelievably quick witted. None of them had known what to do when they first saw the enormous boulder, yet Chen Qingzhou had solved the problem almost immediately.
The four men began manually carrying the broken rocks aside, working enthusiastically to clear the road.
Just as they were making good progress, a deep, low growl suddenly echoed through the area.
Everyone’s expressions changed.
A mutated creature was approaching.
Chen Qingzhou immediately stepped to the front while the others stopped working and grabbed their weapons.
A gigantic Mutated Bear slowly emerged, its eyes filled with savage hostility.
“Everyone, be careful,” Chen Qingzhou said quietly. “This Mutated Bear won’t be easy to deal with.”
Before anyone else could react, he attacked first, sending a bolt of lightning straight at the beast.
The Mutated Bear nimbly dodged the attack and charged directly toward Xia Tian.
Xia Tian’s face turned pale with fear.
At the critical moment, Sun Zecheng instantly raised an earth wall, blocking the Mutated Bear’s charge.
Watching from inside the vehicle, Gu Nuan immediately jumped out.
“Move!”
She pulled out one of the homemade incendiary bombs she had crafted and threw it at the Mutated Bear.
The explosion burst into flames, temporarily halting the beast’s advance.
Seizing the opportunity, Chen Qingzhou gathered all of his strength and unleashed his most powerful lightning strike.
The bolt struck the Mutated Bear squarely on the head.
The enormous beast staggered, swayed for a moment, then crashed heavily to the ground.
Everyone finally let out a long sigh of relief, grateful to have survived the encounter.
After this incident, they understood more clearly than ever that danger lurked everywhere in the Apocalypse. Only by constantly growing stronger could they continue to survive.
