"I demand an immediate explanation for your possession of a Rupture Core."

Marcus’s amplified voice reverberated against the charred walls of the fire station. The sepulchral silence was our only answer. I slid toward the remains of the large window, assessing the perimeter. A fleet of heavy vehicles blocked the ends of the avenue, flanked by snipers posted on the ledges and tactical patrols controlling every escape angle.

I summoned the System’s scanner.Full novel: After The End Gabriel Bowman — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

[Human threats detected: 17.]

[Awakened detected: 2.]

[Note: The 17 operatives match the estimated count of white-eyed Awakened moving toward Grayrock. This is not a coincidence.]

I swallowed, absorbing the brutality of the numbers. Two confirmed Awakened outside. Marcus’s presence leading the incursion was enough to chill my blood, though his status remained an enigma. Evelyn crouched beside me, scanning the darkness outside.

"Assess the number of hostiles," she said.

"Seventeen confirmed operatives," I reported in a rough voice.

Maya’s complexion lost all its color.

"That deployment rules out any diplomatic intention."

Nadia gripped a piece of masonry.

"Marcus brought an army. His objective is total annihilation or absolute submission."

The screech of the main steel gate tore through the tension. Three figures crossed the threshold. Marcus led the formation. His relaxed posture, devoid of visible weapons, projected a threat infinitely superior to any assault rifle. He was escorted by a colossus of hypertrophied musculature and a woman of apathetic expression with a shaved head.

The mercenary leader halted his advance exactly ten meters from our position.

"Gabriel," he said.

"Marcus," I replied.

His cold eyes scanned the room, pausing briefly on Nadia, calculating Maya’s guard, until they settled definitively on the black crystal still pulsing on the pedestal.

"The tactical reports were accurate." Marcus murmured. "You secured the catalyst."

I ignored his comment.

"You deploy seventeen armed men for a simple conversation."

A frozen smile curved his lips.

"I mobilized seventeen operatives because I was uncertain of the exact force required to subdue you."

His pragmatism was as admirable as it was terrifying. Marcus raised a hand, pointing to the giant covering his left flank.

"Darius. Awakened. Specialist in integral physical reinforcement."

The colossus clenched his fists. The cracking of his tendons and the unnatural expansion of his ribcage made any further demonstration unnecessary. But then Darius spoke, his voice a low rumble.

"You’re the one the Tower’s been screaming about." He studied me with something that wasn’t quite respect. "I’ve been waiting to meet you for three days."

I filed that away. Three days. Not hours. Days.

Marcus indicated the woman next.

"Selena. Manipulation of sound waves."

The woman raised two fingers.

The impact was immediate and absolute. The world fell completely silent. The hum of the exterior engines, our own breathing, the crunch of rubble under boots... everything vanished into a suffocating auditory void. A chill pierced my spinal cord. Selena lowered her hand and the roar of reality returned with the force of a whiplash.

Maya rubbed her temples, disoriented.

"I deeply detest that ability."

"Useful for interrogations." Selena’s voice was flat. "Painful for everyone else. I’m told it’s an acquired taste."

"Whose taste?" I asked.

"Mine." For the first time, something like a smile crossed her apathetic face. "You’ll understand when you’ve spent as much time in the silence as I have."

"Her tactical utility is incalculable," Marcus replied, fixing his gaze on Evelyn. "I perceive an excellent survival instinct in your group. However, Gabriel, I demand the immediate surrender of the core."

"I reject the demand."

"In that case, I require your unconditional incorporation into my ranks."

"Proposal denied."

Marcus exhaled a calculated sigh.

"Your obstinacy clouds your judgment. Listen to the terms: unlimited supplies, armored shelter, classified intelligence on the nature of the towers."

That last point hooked directly into my curiosity. Marcus detected my hesitation immediately.

"And, above all, absolute protection."

"Specify the cost of those benefits."

"Permanent tactical cooperation."

"Define the duration of that contract."

"Until our mutual usefulness is exhausted. If you decide to desert in the future, the borders of my territory will remain open."

I frowned, scrutinizing his stony features.

"You lack credibility."

"That is the correct deduction." Marcus nodded with unsettling sincerity. "Trusting me would be equivalent to signing your death sentence, Gabriel."

Maya stepped forward, defiant.

"If you admit your own betrayal, we have no logical motive to accept the deal."

Marcus turned his face toward her.

"Your only motivation lies in choosing the least lethal threat in this room."

The brutal honesty of his argument eliminated any counteroffer. I decided to press on the axis of his interest.

"Justify your obsession with recruiting me."

Marcus held my gaze, weighing the weight of his next words.

"The towers respond to your presence with a unique pattern. And unlike the rest of the Awakened, you possess the astonishing ability to assimilate a core’s energy without being incinerated from within."

I fixed my eyes on the leader.

"Reveal your method for quantifying my absorption."

"We recorded the peak of energy radiation." Marcus sketched a half-smile. "We possess the ability to track the residual signature of any user who consumes a massive charge of Rupture."

The weight of that tactical intelligence fell on my shoulders: his squad had been tracking my thermal beacon for the last few hours.

Suddenly, chaos broke the fragile diplomacy. One of the militiamen posted at the entrance raised his assault rifle, aiming directly at Nadia’s chest.

"Nadia Voss!" the shooter bellowed.

She turned her face, eyes wide open.

BANG!

The muzzle flash lit up the shadows. Evelyn acted on pure instinct, tackling Nadia from the side. The projectile whistled millimeters from our skulls, embedding itself in the concrete wall. Nadia rolled across the floor, evading death by a fraction of a second.

"Hold fire!" Marcus roared, losing his icy composure.

The sniper cocked his weapon for a second shot. He never managed to pull the trigger. Darius closed the ten-meter distance in a blink. A single impact of his massive fist against the soldier’s skull sent him into instant unconsciousness. The neutralization took less than two seconds.

Marcus advanced toward the inert body of his subordinate.

"That execution order never came from my lips."

The militiaman stammered, trying to regain his senses.

"That murderer... massacred three members of our unit..."

Marcus dealt him a brutal backhand, returning him to unconsciousness. He turned toward us, recomposing his mask of supreme authority.

"Nadia is removed from the target list."

Nadia stood up, dusting herself off.

"I thank you for your infinite compassion."

"Distinguish between military discipline and personal sympathy," Marcus replied.

Marcus swept his men with a withering glare. The lesson was clear: his control over the troops showed cracks, but his capacity to impose terror kept the machine running. That duality made him immensely unstable.

A massive structural crack aborted the tension.

CRACK.

The ceiling above our heads vibrated, releasing a cascade of dust and gravel. Marcus raised his eyes, evaluating the damage.

"Immediate evacuation."

"Identify the threat."

The answer came through the walls in the form of a guttural roar that shook the foundations. Maya gripped her knife, pale as a specter.

"Imminent swarm."

Impacts began destroying the exterior façade.

BOOM!

An armored mass burst through the upper-floor windows, followed by a second aberration that clawed its way in, raining glass down on us.

"Selena!" Marcus ordered.

The woman extended both hands. The universe sank again into the deaf void. We watched Marcus gesture frantic orders to his men, but the roar of the beasts and the bursts of rifle fire were reduced to a silent pantomime.

Maya grabbed my shoulder, pointing to a side corridor.

"Confirmed escape route! I memorized it during the infiltration!"

"Tactical movement!" I shouted, though my voice produced no sound at all.

We ran toward the depths of the building. Nadia covered our rear while Darius became a wall of flesh against the first creatures to reach the ground.

We reached a steel hatch at the end of the hallway. Nadia assessed it in a fraction of a second, placed her palm on the metal, and released a massive kinetic pulse. The hinges burst and the heavy door flew off, clearing access to an underground service tunnel.

We plunged into the darkness, recovering our breath and our hearing simultaneously. The safety lasted a single breath. Firm footsteps echoed behind us. Marcus emerged from the shadows of the threshold, intact.

I raised my metal bar, marking the perimeter.

"Justify your insistence on following us."

The mercenary leader halted his advance.

"I need to transfer critical information to you."

"Your negotiation time expired in the basement."

"I have just altered the rules of the game." The hardness in his eyes forced me to listen. "I know your real progress, Gabriel. You have accumulated exactly six percent Adaptation."

Cold paralyzed my lungs. I exchanged a look of absolute stupefaction with Evelyn and Maya.

"Detail your intelligence source. Now."

Marcus held the silence for an eternal second.

"I operate under the guidance of my own System."

My heart skipped a beat.

"You said you were a standard human. That your genetics remained intact."

Marcus sketched a crooked smile.

"I lied. Or perhaps my System does not classify me as Awakened. There are differences you still don’t understand."

"Explain."

"My System is a fragment. A degraded copy. It doesn’t give me abilities like yours. It gives me knowledge. It tells me where to go. What to look for." He paused. "It told me about you. About the Bearer. About the towers."

"The Bearer," I repeated.

"You. Or someone like you. Someone the towers are programmed to find." Marcus studied me. "My System says you’re the key to ending this. Or making it worse. It hasn’t decided which."

Before I could process the magnitude of his confession, the tunnel walls began to convulse.

BOOOOOOM.

A brutal earthquake shook the bowels of the city, threatening to bury us. My interface exploded into a sea of red alerts, saturating my vision.

[CRITICAL WARNING.]

[MASSIVE RUPTURE ACTIVITY DETECTED.]

[Multiple energy signatures rising vertiginously.]

[NEW TOWER DETECTED.]

I stood petrified before the data.

"A second structure has emerged?"

Marcus paled, confirming the cataclysmic event.

"Affirmative."

I deployed the holographic map. A new monolith marked the western quadrant of the city, growing at a terrifying rate. A beam of scarlet light pierced the clouds, dyeing the night blood red.

"Take cover!" Marcus bellowed, displaying pure terror for the first time since I met him. "The city has just detonated its second phase!"

The unison shriek of thousands of creatures drowned out his words. Maya ran toward an upper ventilation grate and peered at the surface.

"Gabriel, I require your visual assessment!"

I climbed to her position. The streets were boiling. Hordes of aberrations were pouring out of the sewers, out of the ruined buildings, out of every crack in the asphalt. However, their behavior defied all predatory logic. They ignored Marcus’s soldiers. They ignored the crossfire.

Hundreds of deformed faces pointed exactly toward our underground coordinates.

[ATTENTION.]

[Multiple entities have locked onto the user as a priority target.]

A knot of ice blocked my throat.

"Justify this massive focus on my position."

The new tower emitted an expansive shockwave. A crimson pulse swept across the metropolis, and as if sharing a single hive mind, the entire swarm charged toward the tunnel.

Marcus fixed his eyes on mine, distilling a fatal certainty.

"You have just witnessed the absolute truth. That monolith has no interest in ordinary Awakened."

He pointed at my chest.

"It is searching exclusively for you."

The System updated my fate with a lapidary sentence, glowing intense red before my eyes.

[MAIN OBJECTIVE UPDATED.]

[SURVIVE THE ACTIVATION OF THE TOWER.]

[Estimated survival probability: 31%.]

For the first time since the interface embedded itself in my retina, the algorithm denied me an escape route, a damage metric, or a tactical analysis. It simply dictated a desperate order in the face of an almost certain massacre.

Survive.

And then, for the first time in hours, the System added something else. Something I hadn’t seen since the beginning.

[MISSION COMPLETED: Survive the wave for 24 hours.]

[Reward unlocked: Initial class evolution.]

[Class assigned: ANALYST — Specialization: Tactical intelligence and environmental adaptation.]

[New abilities available: Enhanced Analysis, Danger Sense, Tactical Mapping.]

[Adaptation increased: 6% → 8%.]

I stared at the notification, barely processing it. The 24 hours had passed. I had survived the wave. And now the System was giving me the reward I had been owed since the beginning.

But there was no time to celebrate.

[Remaining points: 2. Assign them at your discretion.]

I closed the panel. The reward would have to wait. Right now, I had a swarm to survive.
