……

The top trending topics were all about Yin Kairui, and the most popular one was the claim that he had brought a child to his filming location, accompanied by a photo taken while he was being transported to the hospital. Although the picture was blurry, it clearly showed a small child clinging tightly to him, though the child’s face was not captured.

Speculations swarmed in the comments section. Fans were rushing to deny that the child had any connection to him, but he also had rivals and detractors online, many of whom were gleefully insisting that the child was definitely his. All sorts of unsubstantiated claims and malicious rumors were spreading wildly across the internet.

Yin Kairui’s expression turned dark with fury.

Shan Shan, who had no idea what was going on, looked at him with concern and asked, “Brother Narcissus, does anywhere hurt?”

Yin Kairui had to hold himself back with great effort to keep from hurling his phone across the room. He ground his teeth and said, “Are these people out of their minds? I’m only twenty years old where on earth would I get a child who’s three or four years old?”

“Aren’t detractors always like this?” said Wen Yiting, who remained relatively calm. She turned her attention to the little girl. “Right now, the most important thing is to prove that this child isn’t related to you. We just need to find her parents and send her back home, and everything will be cleared up.”

“But Shan Shan doesn’t have mom or dad!” Shan Shan tilted her head and spoke in a soft, childish voice. “Shan Shan only has big brothers, big sisters, uncles, aunts, grandpas and grandmas.”

“No parents?” Wen Yiting and Yin Kairui exchanged a look of surprise. Wen Yiting asked, “Then where did you live before?”

“On the mountain!” She answered the question confidently.

Wen Yiting fell silent for a moment.

Something about this whole situation felt distinctly odd. Looking at Shan Shan’s innocent, wide-eyed expression and the worn, simple clothes she was wearing, Wen Yiting couldn’t help but recall some of the criminal cases she had seen reported in the news. Her expression softened with sympathy, and she spoke gently to the child: “Shan Shan, how about I help you find your mom and dad, okay?”

“I don’t want to go away! Auntie, please don’t send Shan Shan away, okay?” Shan Shan grabbed the sleeve of Wen Yiting’s coat. “And brother, please don’t leave Shan Shan behind again, okay? I came here to help you.”

Again?

If Wen Yiting hadn’t known Yin Kairui for years and was fully aware that he had never lived on any remote mountain, even she would have believed that he had once abandoned this little girl.

And come to think of it what had Shan Shan called him earlier?

Brother Narcissus?

Could it be that there was someone out there who looked exactly like Yin Kairui, and that person was actually the brother Shan Shan was talking about? Wen Yiting glanced at Yin Kairui’s face, but quickly dismissed the idea. Someone with such striking, outstanding looks as his would never have managed to stay completely unknown to the public.

Yin Kairui, however, reacted immediately to what Shan Shan had said by rolling his eyes in exasperation. “Help me? Help me get labeled as someone who had a child while still a minor? Help me hand my rivals the perfect opportunity to spread lies about me?”

Shan Shan couldn’t understand terms like “rivals” or “spreading rumors.” She only caught the word “child” and replied in confusion, “Does Brother Narcissus want to raise a baby? But brother can have babies all by himself, right?”

After all, he was her “narcissus brother” someone who was entirely complete and self-sufficient all on his own!

“What do you mean by that?!” Yin Kairui flew into a huff and pointed at Shan Shan while turning to Wen Yiting. “She’s making fun of me, isn’t she?”

Wen Yiting coughed lightly to hide her smile. “She’s just a little child what could she possibly understand?”

It was actually a good thing that she was too young to grasp the implications of what Yin Kairui had just said. She shot him a sharp look and said, “Watch what you say! She doesn’t even look four years old yet how can you argue with a small child like that?”

Yin Kairui, who had just been reprimanded, stared at her in disbelief. “???“

Was this really the same Sister Wen who always treated him with such care and affection?

Yin Kairui felt wronged and wanted to make a fuss, but the pain in his tailbone made it impossible for him to move around freely. Finally, he huffed in annoyance, pulled the covers up over himself, and lay there pretending to be unconscious.

Xiao Liu, who had come up to check on them earlier, went out again and returned with steamed buns and congee he had bought from a shop near the hospital entrance.

Wen Yiting opened the food containers and said, “Have something to eat, and then I’ll take you to the police station.”

“What’s a police station?” Shan Shan, who had just been drawn over by the delicious smell of the food, turned around instantly, looking as alert and cautious as a little wild animal. “I’m not leaving brother!”

“We’re going there exactly for your brother’s sake,” Wen Yiting explained, trying to put it in terms the child could understand. “Right now, there are people saying bad things about him. If we go to the police station, the officers there can help us gather proof to show everyone that your brother hasn’t done anything wrong.”

Shan Shan frowned, her face full of worry. “But brother has been having such bad luck lately! If I leave, he might run into even more trouble.” As she spoke, her eyes began to well up with tears, and she stretched her hands wide apart to make a big circle in the air. “Before, he almost got almost got hit by something this huge!”

“I promise I’ll bring you back as soon as possible,” Wen Yiting reassured her patiently. “Besides, your brother will be leaving the hospital soon. If you stay with him and people take more photos of you two together, it will only make things even more complicated.”

Shan Shan could tell that Wen Yiting was speaking sincerely. After hesitating for a moment, she nodded her head in agreement.

Wen Yiting picked up one of the steamed buns and said, “Here, open your mouth and have a bite first.”

Shan Shan opened her mouth eagerly. As soon as she took a bite, her eyes lit up with delight. “So tasty!”

Big Sister Nine-Tailed Fox had been right all along human food was absolutely delicious!

“Eat as much as you like,” Wen Yiting said with a soft laugh. She fed her one bun, then a few spoonfuls of congee, and offered her sips of water from time to time, moving with the natural ease of someone who had plenty of experience caring for children.

When Shan Shan finished eating, she was still looking longingly at the remaining food. “Are you still hungry?” Wen Yiting asked.

“Uh-huh,” Shan Shan nodded, her eyes sparkling. “I can still eat lots and lots more!”

Wen Yiting felt her small belly gently; it was still soft and flat. “Alright, let’s go downstairs to get more food. It’s not worth sending Xiao Liu out again to buy things.”

“Okay!” Shan Shan nodded happily, then turned toward the bed where Yin Kairui was lying and stretched out her hands. “I want to go over there for a minute.”

From under the covers, Yin Kairui refused firmly, “Don’t come over! I don’t want anything, and I’m not getting up!”

Wen Yiting sighed inwardly. Where on earth did this silly, stubborn man come from?

She simply picked Shan Shan up, walked over to the bed, and pulled the blanket right off him. “Don’t you dare forget Shan Shan was the one who saved your life earlier!”

Yin Kairui, who had been about to protest, froze in place. He mumbled under his breath, “Yeah, and now everyone thinks I’ve secretly gotten married and had a child, thanks to all this…”

Even so, he stopped struggling and let them do as they pleased.

Shan Shan reached out her small hand and touched his forehead gently. “Brother Narcissus, don’t be scared. Shan Shan chased away all the bad, dark things, so you don’t have to be afraid of getting hit by big things anymore!”

Yin Kairui was left speechless.

Wen Yiting felt both amused and deeply touched by the little girl’s innocent kindness. She glared at Yin Kairui and mouthed silently: Say thank you, and then I’ll take her away.

Yin Kairui stared at her, looking utterly miserable.

When Wen Yiting’s expression shifted to one of clear warning, he finally spoke up in a reluctant tone: “Thank you.”

Shan Shan’s face lit up with joy, and she broke into a bright smile. “You’re welcome!”

Brother Narcissus had actually said thank you to her! Did that mean he didn’t dislike her anymore?

Wen Yiting took Shan Shan to a small restaurant near the hospital entrance, where she ordered steamed dumplings, a bowl of soup, and a serving of shredded pork noodles without any chili.

What she hadn’t expected was that Shan Shan ate almost everything on the table, leaving only a few dumplings untouched. Even after finishing all that food, her stomach still looked completely flat.

Where on earth was all that food going?

“Are you still hungry?”

Shan Shan nodded obediently. “Yes, I am.”

Wen Yiting was at a loss for words.

Drawing on her own experience raising children, she realized that some children simply had naturally large appetites. Besides, the hospital was just nearby if anything went wrong. She gritted her teeth and ordered two more servings of dumplings.

What happened next left Wen Yiting completely stunned. Shan Shan proceeded to demonstrate exactly what it meant to be small in size but big in appetite she ate eight servings of dumplings, five bowls of noodles, six servings of wonton soup, and three beef pancakes all by herself.

Wen Yiting stared at the empty plates in front of her, her eyes wide with disbelief.

Shan Shan rubbed her stomach, which was finally feeling full, and looked up at Wen Yiting with a nervous expression. “Auntie… did I eat too much?”

“Uh… no, not at all,” Wen Yiting said, stopping herself from saying what she really thought. She gently pressed her hand against Shan Shan’s belly and found that it was still soft and not stretched tight at all meaning she hadn’t even eaten until she was uncomfortably full. Wen Yiting shook her head in disbelief and said, “Children need plenty of food to grow, right? Eating a lot is perfectly normal.”

Shan Shan breathed a sigh of relief and wrapped her small arms around Wen Yiting’s neck in a hug. “Auntie is the nicest person ever.”

The nearest police station was only a twenty-minute drive away. After double-checking that Shan Shan showed no signs of feeling unwell after her huge meal, Wen Yiting carefully avoided waiting reporters and photographers and drove the little girl there.

As soon as they walked through the doors of the police station, Shan Shan let out a soft gasp of wonder. To her eyes, the whole building was glowing with bright, golden light.

This was such a wonderful place! There was so much positive energy and virtue gathered here!

As soon as she stepped inside, Shan Shan felt a warm, comfortable feeling spread through her whole body.

“Hello, I’m Wen Yiting. I called in earlier to report a situation,” Wen Yiting said, lifting Shan Shan up so she could be seen clearly. “This is the child I mentioned the one we suspect may have been abducted.”

The officer working at the reception desk had a very gentle manner. “Hello, little one. Do you remember your name? Do you remember where you live?”

“My name is Shan Shan, and I live on the mountain,” the child replied. Although she didn’t fully understand what “abducted” meant, Wen Yiting had told her earlier that all she needed to do was answer questions honestly and answering questions meant she could help Brother Narcissus. That was why she was being so cooperative.

When the officer asked more questions about her family, Shan Shan explained that she had grandparents, uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters, all of whom also lived on the mountain, but that all of them had disappeared one day. After recording all of this information, the officer realized they hadn’t gathered any details that could help locate her family or her home.

Deciding to try another approach, the officer said she would first run a search through their official records.

She hadn’t expected to find anything useful, but as soon as she uploaded a photo of Shan Shan into the system, a matching record appeared immediately.

“Zhou Shan Shan, three years and seven months old. Registered residence: Zhou Village, Dahe Town. Her parents passed away one month ago, and she was placed in the care of her paternal uncle. Reported missing five days ago.”

Wen Yiting stared at the document in shock. “Her parents are gone? And she still has living relatives?”

After her initial surprise, Wen Yiting felt relieved this situation should be easy to resolve, after all.

“Since she has a legal guardian, we just need to send her back to them, right?”

“I don’t want to go back! Auntie lied to me!” Shan Shan immediately jumped down from her chair and ran toward the door.

She wasn’t looking where she was going, however, and ran straight into the legs of a man who had just turned the corner. The impact made her lose her balance, and she fell hard onto her bottom.

“Whose little kid is this?” a man’s voice rang out, sounding amused. “Did you hit your head and get confused?”

“Brother Tengshe…” Shan Shan’s eyes lit up for a split second, then dimmed again.

She could sense his familiar presence, but it was faint and distant he must have just come into contact with that energy recently, rather than being the source of it himself.

By the time she realized this, Wen Yiting had already run over and picked her up in her arms. She nodded apologetically at the young man standing in front of them and said, “I’m so sorry she just ran into you out of nowhere.”

“It’s no problem,” the man replied. He was tall and lean, and he looked down at Shan Shan’s round, rosy face with a smile, reaching out to pinch her cheek lightly. “I’ll take this as your apology, then.”

Shan Shan instinctively raised her hands to cover her face.

It was this small movement that caught the man’s attention. His expression turned sharp and serious all of a sudden. He grabbed Shan Shan’s wrist and gently pulled up the sleeve of her shirt.

The child was already thin, and while her face still had the soft roundness typical of young children that hid her slight build, the moment her sleeve was pulled up, it became clear how fragile she was her wrist was so thin it looked almost too small for her hand.

The man turned to look at Wen Yiting, his eyes cold and filled with suspicion. “Are you abusing this child?”
