Nothing boded well.
For three days, the capital had been buried beneath heavy snow, thick flakes falling like goose feathers. Icicles hanging from the eaves had grown to eight zhang in length and even the dogs were so cold that they refused to leave their spots.
Yet the Marquis of Zhenyuan’s residence was preparing to send their son off in a grand and lively wedding.
With snow blanketing the world outside, Chu Zhaohuai was smashing things inside the bridal chamber.
Only, the bridal chamber was so sparsely furnished and cold that there was hardly anything to smash. After finally finding a chipped vase and raising his hand to throw it, the steward overseeing him at the Marquis’s residence said with a grim expression, “A paper hammer vase fired in an imperial kiln. Five jin of gold.” Frightened, Chu Zhaohuai hurriedly snatched it back into his arms.
“First Young Master, please calm your anger,” the steward urged. “In another half an hour, Prince Jing’s residence will send people to receive the bride. If you refuse to get into the bridal sedan, I fear the entire Marquis’s household will be charged with a crime.”
Chu Zhaohuai sat upright before the dressing table by the window, dressed in a brilliant red wedding robe. Several vivid plum blossoms had fallen onto his shoulders, setting off the deathly pallor of his sickly face yet doing nothing to conceal his exceptionally fine bone structure.
Clutching the vase in his arms, he stared blankly ahead. “At least I’ll have someone accompanying me on the road to the Yellow Springs. It’ll be lively when we all die together. Not a bad deal.”
The steward was rendered speechless.
After two days of this uproar, he had exhausted every kind word and every harsh word he could think of. He truly had no idea how else he could persuade him.
Just then, the door bearing a red paper with the character for double happiness was pushed open. The winter wind came roaring inside, carrying several snowflakes that rolled into the room and melted in an instant. Someone stepped through the doorway.
“Indeed, it will be lively. If His Majesty flies into a rage and orders your entire clan exterminated, the Bai family of Lin’an won’t be able to escape unscathed either. Your maternal grandfather, your maternal uncles, all of them will accompany you on the road to the underworld.”
Chu Zhaohuai looked over. After a long while, he finally muttered, “Marquis.”
“Calling your own father ‘Marquis’, is this how your maternal grandfather taught you to address your elders?” Marquis of Zhenyuan, Chu Jing, was in the prime of his life, with a tall, upright figure and a stern, cold face. His voice was equally cold as he said, “This marriage was bestowed by His Majesty. Even Prince Jing cannot defy an imperial marriage decree, much less you.”
Chu Zhaohuai stroked the vase in his arms and said nothing.
As for Prince Jing, he would certainly have liked to defy the decree but he had heard that the capital’s foremost demon of a man had committed far too many evil deeds and had finally received retribution just before the New Year. The man had been unconscious for half a month already and was clearly on the verge of dying. Even if he had the will to resist, he probably no longer had the strength.
Chu Jing said, “Don’t throw a tantrum. If the Marquis’s residence hadn’t sheltered you all these years, how could you possibly have…”
Chu Zhaohuai interrupted him. “All these years, I practiced medicine in Jiangnan. I relied neither on the Marquis’s residence nor on my grandfather and am I not still alive and well?”
Chu Jing let out a cold laugh. “Your maternal grandfather wrote to say that you went around Jiangnan treating anyone who came to you, offended some powerful people, caused a great disaster and ended up being hunted down. If I hadn’t sent people to bring you back to the capital from the Bai family residence in Lin’an so you could escape the trouble, you would have died long ago. You call that living well?”
Chu Zhaohuai was impervious to both soft words and hard ones, continuing to chatter away. “Sending me into a den of tigers and wolves to escape danger isn’t much different from sending me to my death.”
Chu Jing stiffened, an unnatural expression flashing across his face for an instant.
Rumor had it that Ji Xun, Prince Jing, was cruel and bloodthirsty and suffered from an incurable madness. Moreover, Chu Jing of the Marquis of Zhenyuan’s residence and Ji Xun had always held opposing political views and their clashes in court and schemes against each other in secret were nothing unusual.
For Chu Zhaohuai to marry into that household was indeed like walking straight into a den of tigers and wolves.
“Ji Xun has offended too many people. Now that he has fallen from power, there will certainly be people who can no longer restrain themselves from trying to kill him. Eight chances out of ten, he won’t survive past the Little New Year.” Chu Jing avoided Chu Zhaohuai’s gaze. “Once he dies, you’ll naturally enjoy boundless wealth and glory for the rest of your life.”
Chu Zhaohuai’s brows drew together.
With those words, his father had made it completely clear that there was not the slightest room left for negotiation.
Chu Zhaohuai had been physically frail and plagued by illness since childhood, suffering from a heart condition. When he was five years old, his mother fell ill and passed away. After Chu Jing elevated his concubine Zheng, who already had a son, to the position of principal wife, he found an excuse to send Chu Zhaohuai to Jiangnan, claiming that he was a “star of calamity, bringing disaster without end and misfortune upon his relatives,” and, in the fine name of “recuperating from illness,” sent him away.
It lasted for more than a decade.
Chu Jing had never held much fatherly affection for him to begin with and he certainly was not going to defy an imperial decree for the sake of an eldest son he did not care about.
Chu Zhaohuai had an excellent memory. Even after all these years, he still remembered that the babbling state preceptor had once said that when he turned eighteen, he would encounter a calamity, one that might even cost him his life. If he could safely survive that ordeal, however, the rest of his life would supposedly be smooth and peaceful, blessed with health and good fortune.
Now, his eighteenth birthday had not even arrived and he had already run into the matter of being married off to the capital’s infamous Demon God…
Could matters involving ghosts, gods, divination and fortune telling really be this eerily accurate?
Chu Zhaohuai glanced toward the shadows of the guards stationed outside the bridal chamber. He knew that the matter had already been decided. If he continued resisting, he would probably be tied up and stuffed into the bridal sedan, leaving him without even the last shred of dignity.
He drew a deep breath and finally accepted his fate. Then he asked the question that concerned him most. “The things my mother left for me before she died, Father, did you put them among the one hundred and twenty bridal gift chests you promised me? Madam Zheng didn’t happen to keep them for herself, did she?”
Chu Jing: “…”
Chu Jing nearly failed to suppress his anger. “No matter how badly off the Marquis’s residence may be, we are not so shameless as to covet that little bit of property of yours.”
Chu Zhaohuai breathed a sigh of relief and politely said, “Oh, oh. It’s fine even if they’re not there. I was just asking.”
Chu Jing took a breath, composed himself and called the matchmaker in to apply his makeup.
As expected, Chu Zhaohuai no longer resisted.
Chu Jing did not want to exchange even another word with this eldest son with whom he had so little affection. He had just turned to leave when, perhaps because his conscience had suddenly stirred, he stopped and reminded him with a grim expression, “Prince Jing’s residence is filled with danger. If you have any sense, do not approach Prince Jing. Tonight, you’d best find some excuse and avoid staying in the bridal chamber.”
“What?”
That was all Chu Jing was willing to say. He turned to the matchmaker and instructed, “Apply the makeup more thickly. Cover the mole.”
The matchmaker immediately acknowledged his order.
Chu Jing turned and left.
Chu Zhaohuai tilted his head and stared in the direction his father had disappeared, completely unable to understand what he had meant.
Before long, the matchmaker coughed softly. “First Young Master, your makeup is finished.”
Chu Zhaohuai raised his eyes and glanced at his reflection casually, only to be startled.
He had no idea where this matchmaker had found such a person. Her method of applying makeup was crude and straightforward, smearing layer after layer of thick powder over his face until his features were completely obscured. Even his own birth mother would probably fail to recognize him.
Under the dim candlelight, he looked almost exactly like a vengeful ghost that had crawled out to claim someone’s life.
It did not look like he was getting married at all. It looked more like he was being married off in a ghost marriage.
The matchmaker continued praising him enthusiastically. “First Young Master is truly as beautiful as one of the immortals. You and His Highness Prince Jing are truly a match made in heaven, a union of gold and jade.”
Chu Zhaohuai understood.
So this was the new bridal makeup that had become fashionable in the capital. It really was different from Jiangnan.
After the elaborate phoenix crown and red wedding robes had been painstakingly arranged, layer upon layer of complicated garments and ornaments finally settled into place. By then, dusk had fallen and the sound of firecrackers could be heard outside.
The people from Prince Jing’s residence had arrived to receive the bride.
The matchmaker lowered a wedding veil embroidered with mandarin ducks playing in the water over his phoenix crown. Chu Zhaohuai closed his eyes for a moment before being helped into the bridal sedan.
Forget it. Perhaps this was simply what fate had destined for him.
There was no point in trying to avoid it. It would be better to go and meet his “calamity” face to face.
Surely a dying man who was unconscious in bed could not possibly eat him, could he?
The firecrackers blasted the falling snow into a chaotic, mottled carpet of red across the ground.
The howling wind and snow intertwined with the noisy clamor of gongs and drums. All along the long street, the wedding procession beat its drums and struck its gongs as the bridal sedan swayed and rocked its way toward Prince Jing’s residence in the northern part of the city.
…….
A prince’s residence holding a wedding on a snowy day was enough to draw nearly every prominent figure in the capital. Regardless of whether they had come with sincere congratulations or ulterior motives, they all braved the heavy snow to arrive with smiling faces.
The atmosphere was filled with music and revelry, lively and bustling beyond compare.
With the wedding veil embroidered with mandarin ducks playing in water covering his face, Chu Zhaohuai could see nothing except swaying flashes of red. He was helped down from the bridal sedan by several people all at once and had absolutely no idea who exactly was standing before him as he bowed in the wedding rites.
After what felt like an eternity, he finally stumbled into the bridal chamber in a daze.
The sleeping quarters of Prince Jing’s residence were filled with the heavy smell of medicine. Chu Zhaohuai instinctively drew in a breath, then immediately frowned.
This medicinal fragrance…
Prince Jing was gravely ill and needed absolute peace and quiet. This marriage, which could practically be considered a “wedding to drive away misfortune,” had made the front courtyard noisy and bustling with activity yet the rear courtyard was empty and cold, without the slightest sound.
The matchmaker quietly withdrew and pulled the door shut behind her.
Chu Zhaohuai patiently waited for a while. Once he sensed that there was no one nearby, he raised a hand and lifted the wedding veil, hooking it over the phoenix crown.
It was the bitterest part of winter yet the bridal chamber was as cold as an ice cellar. Even the windows had been left open, allowing the draft to howl through the room with snow carried upon it.
There was neither an underground heating system nor even a brazier.
Chu Zhaohuai’s hands and feet were already freezing cold. He turned his head and sneezed, his gaze landing on the enormous incense burner beside the bed.
He had originally intended to investigate the medicinal fragrance but the moment he saw that golden incense burner, his eyes went straight.
Prince Jing truly was deeply favored and relied upon by His Majesty. Even the incense burner used to burn his incense was made of gold.
It was dazzling.
Chu Zhaohuai reluctantly tore his gaze away from the golden incense burner, gathered up the heavy folds of his wedding robes and took several steps forward.
Only when he drew closer did he finally catch the thick scent of poisonous herbs emanating from within the incense burner.
If this incense continued burning in the sleeping quarters for long, Prince Jing indeed would not survive past the Little New Year.
Chu Zhaohuai poured a bowl of water, lifted the heavy lid of the incense burner and prepared to extinguish the incense first.
It was not that he wanted to save Prince Jing. It was simply that physicians could not cure themselves and his own constitution was far too weak. If he inhaled too much of this poison, he would probably have to follow Prince Jing into death before long and become a martyr to their supposed love.
Suddenly, a voice asked, “What is the Princess Consort doing?”
Chu Zhaohuai was so startled that his hand trembled. The entire bowl of water spilled into the incense burner and with a sharp hiss, a huge cluster of ghostly blue flames suddenly erupted. Immediately afterward, gray white smoke billowed upward from the burner.
The bridal chamber, which had been empty only moments ago, now contained a man dressed entirely in black.
He wore a mask that concealed his face and regarded Chu Zhaohuai coldly. As he slowly approached, not the slightest sound of his footsteps could be heard.
The man was evidently a hidden guard. He raised a hand and relit the incense. “This incense is the medicine His Highness uses to cling to life. Princess Consort, please do not touch it without permission.”
Chu Zhaohuai had studied medicine under his maternal grandfather since childhood yet he had never heard of such a method of prolonging someone’s life. “What illness could possibly require poison…”
The five fingers of the hidden guard’s hand tightened abruptly around his sword.
Chu Zhaohuai shuddered with alarm and hurriedly said, “Good medicine, good medicine indeed.”
The hidden guard seemed to have a rather poor temper. He was not fooled by Chu Zhaohuai’s perfunctory flattery. Instead, killing intent actually arose in his eyes and he suddenly drew his sword.
The incense continued to rise in delicate spirals, its poisonous fragrance even more concentrated than before.
Chu Zhaohuai was startled and hurriedly took half a step backward.
His wedding robes were heavy and his body lost its balance for a moment. He stepped on the hem of his own robes and crashed down beside the bed.
His life was more important than his pride. Chu Zhaohuai had none of the arrogance expected of a young nobleman and immediately became as yielding as necessary. “Spare me, spare me! This medicine will definitely keep His Highness alive. He’ll surely live to be a hundred years old and have many children… Mm!”
The moment his voice fell, two sharp metallic clangs rang out.
Two crossbow bolts tore through the air. The hidden guard swiftly drew his sword and knocked them aside with clean, decisive movements. The bolts flew past Chu Zhaohuai’s ear and embedded themselves three inches deep into the wooden pillar of the bridal bed, their black feathered tails trembling and humming from the force of the impact.
They had missed Chu Zhaohuai’s life by no more than half an inch.
Still shaken out of his wits, Chu Zhaohuai stared blankly at the arrows, their tips coated in poison.
Assassins?
The hidden guard’s voice sank into a cold command. “Protect His Highness!”
In the next instant, the beams overhead seemed to come alive with a flock of birds. Several black shadows dropped down from above with a series of swift movements, drawing their swords as they rushed out of the bridal chamber to meet the enemy.
Within only a few breaths, the sounds of clashing weapons and short, sharp cries of agony came from outside the room.
Chu Zhaohuai had never learned so much as the basic skill of tying a chicken down, much less fighting. He had never witnessed anything like this before. Frightened out of his wits, he pressed a hand against his chest and took several hurried breaths.
No wonder Chu Jing had told him at the last moment not to remain in the bridal chamber.
So he had known all along that someone would go to such lengths to assassinate Ji Xun on his wedding night.
The bridal chamber was spacious and offered nowhere to hide.
Chu Zhaohuai looked around anxiously. Gathering up his robes, he climbed onto the broad bridal bed and lifted the layers upon layers of bed curtains. Then he froze.
There was someone lying on the enormous bed.
Naturally, the only person who could be lying in the bridal chamber was Prince Jing.
As a member of the imperial family, Ji Xun, Prince Jing, possessed an innate nobility that could not be ignored even though his illness had already reached the point of being terminal. The winter wind was bitterly cold yet he wore only a thin black robe, its collar loosely open and revealing a scar that seemed to stretch almost all the way across his chest.
The man slept with his eyes closed. His thin lips were pale and his thick, long eyelashes resembled dark crow feathers. He looked almost like a man eating flower on the verge of withering.
Chu Zhaohuai stared at him for a moment, his mind going blank.
It was difficult to imagine that a man who, at first glance, was simply and undeniably good looking could actually be the infamous “Mad Dog’s Equal” and “Ghost Frightener”, the terrifying figure rumored to be capable of taking a person’s life with his bare hands and proficient in eight hundred different methods of torture.
Yet no matter how awe inspiring he had once been, no matter how powerful and influential he had been at the height of his authority, now he could only remain trapped on this small bed, muddled and waiting helplessly for death.
How pitiful.
Chu Zhaohuai carefully lifted one foot and stepped over Prince Jing’s body, intending to crawl farther inside the bed. The instant his foot landed, however, it seemed to step on something. Through the thin blanket, he could vaguely make out the shape beneath it.
It seemed to be Prince Jing’s hand.
Perhaps even in his unconscious state, Prince Jing sensed the pain. His brows drew together slightly.
Chu Zhaohuai: “…”
Remembering this man’s reputation for killing people as casually as chopping vegetables, Chu Zhaohuai was so frightened that he immediately threw himself toward the innermost side of the bed with a loud thump. He hid himself as far inside the bed as possible, pressed his palms together and trembled as he bowed repeatedly toward Prince Jing.
“Please calm down, please calm down. Rest in peace, rest in peace.”
He had not been sharing the bed with the pitiful Prince Jing for very long when the screams outside gradually died away.
Chu Zhaohuai finally let out a breath of relief.
He cautiously bent down and began to rise, terrified that he might step on this great deity again. He intended to climb down from the foot of the bed but just as he straightened his body, two black clad, masked men suddenly vaulted through the wide open window.
Their movements were swift, decisive and utterly merciless. They charged directly toward the bridal bed, blades in hand, coming straight for their lives.
Chu Zhaohuai: “…”
His legs went weak.
His entire body collapsed directly onto Prince Jing’s chest.
Prince Jing’s brows furrowed even more deeply.
Chu Zhaohuai almost wished he could simply smash the man into “resting in peace” right then and there, saving himself the trouble of dealing with Prince Jing once he woke up and came looking for him.
But with the assassins already upon them, a single slash of their blades would probably send him peacefully to the afterlife anyway.
Chu Zhaohuai reacted extremely quickly and immediately shouted for help.
“Protect His Highness!”
But it was already too late.
In the blink of an eye, the assassins had reached them. Their long blades came crashing downward, clearly intending to pierce straight through the pair of newlyweds on the bed, two lives taken with a single strike.
The killing intent coiled around them like poisonous snakes capable of devouring human beings. Chu Zhaohuai could not muster enough strength to escape again. His back went cold in waves and his throat was so dry and tight that even swallowing had become difficult.
Under the overwhelming terror, his mind went completely blank. He had only enough time to close his eyes before the blade descended.
Suddenly, a hand seized Chu Zhaohuai’s wrist.
It was cold, cold as a stone chilled by winter, like the hand of a vengeful ghost that had crawled up from the depths of the underworld. The icy touch sent a violent shudder through him.
The candle flame flickered faintly.
A flash of cold light gleamed from a sharp blade.
Chu Zhaohuai froze and opened his eyes in confusion.
Before he could see clearly, the golden tassels hanging from his phoenix crown collided again and again with crisp metallic sounds. The wedding veil, which had been carelessly draped over the phoenix hairpin, slipped down once more, blocking his vision behind a curtain of scarlet.
Amid the clear tinkling of the golden beads striking one another, there came the muffled sound of something blunt piercing through flesh.
Sss!
The faint scent of blood slowly spread through the room.
As Chu Zhaohuai stood there in a daze, his vision finally began to change.
Beneath the wedding veil embroidered with golden thread and mandarin ducks playing in the water, something golden and stained with blood reached inward. With an almost frivolous, casual motion, it lifted the wedding veil embroidered with the mandarin ducks.
At first, Chu Zhaohuai thought it was the ceremonial scale used to lift a bride’s veil.
But when he lowered his eyes and looked more carefully, he realized that it seemed to be a staff made entirely of gold.
Chu Zhaohuai raised his head.
In the bitter winter cold, the man who only moments ago had lain there with his eyes closed, looking almost indistinguishable from a cold corpse, was now sitting lazily at the edge of the bed.
His thin black robes hung loosely from his body, barely concealing the scarred flesh beneath. A hideous scar ran across his neck, carrying with it an unmistakable trace of restrained wildness and viciousness.
Prince Jing turned his head slightly to look at him.
Several bright red streaks of blood were splattered across his pale, almost porcelain white face.
At the foot of the bed, the assassin who had been holding the sharp blade now lay on his back on the floor. His eyes were bloodshot, his hatred deep enough to seem carved into his very bones. Blood continued to pour from his throat and after only a few breaths, his life was gone.
In the briefest instant, in the time it took a rabbit to dart away and a wild duck to take flight, the assassin had died with his eyes still wide open.
Prince Jing’s clothing was thin and he had not even been carrying a sword or saber. Chu Zhaohuai could not understand how he had managed to do it.
His gaze swept over the object that had pinned the black clad man down.
Chu Zhaohuai froze.
…It was actually the Golden Dove Headed Staff bestowed upon him by His Majesty?
Ordinary dove headed staffs had heads made of bronze and bodies usually carved from sandalwood but Ji Xun’s staff had been cast entirely from pure gold, with the four characters “Long Years, Prosperous Spring” engraved upon it in small seal script.
The bottom of the golden staff was thick and blunt, possessing none of the sharp edge of a sword or blade that could easily cut through flesh.
Yet Ji Xun had used that dove headed staff to casually pierce straight through the assassin’s heart, killing him with a single blow.
Just how much strength did it take to do that?
And just now, had he used this very dove headed staff, the same one that had only moments ago killed a man, to lift Chu Zhaohuai’s wedding veil?
A violent shudder ran through Chu Zhaohuai.
The impressions he had formed only moments ago, the “handsome man” and the “pitiful man trapped on his deathbed, helplessly waiting to die”, were overturned in an instant.
Only one thought remained.
He really was a demon of death.
Chu Zhaohuai pressed his lips tightly together, terrified that if he let even the slightest gap appear between them, a ghostly soul might escape from his mouth.
His ink black hair and dark robes intertwined with the bloodstains smeared across his cheek. Ji Xun looked like a jade faced Yama who had come to claim a life, showing not the slightest trace of the weakness that had plagued him only moments earlier.
He smiled gently.
“Did I frighten you?”
Chu Zhaohuai’s face was deathly pale yet he forced himself to remain calm and said, “N… no, not at all.”
The moment the words left his mouth, the brave and fearless Princess Consort of Prince Jing’s body suddenly went limp and his entire person staggered forward before collapsing.
He fainted.
Ji Xun: “…”
