That night, Xu Tianxing sent a message asking Ning Sui to meet him on the rooftop. No one knew what they talked about.

All they knew was that the next morning, Xu Tianxing went straight to the Academic Affairs Office and confessed. He said he had taken the phone as a joke, never meaning for things to go this far.

Regardless of his excuse, the act still counted as theft. The school issued him a formal demerit, posting his name on the public bulletin board for everyone to see.Full novel: After The Substitution Marriage, I laughed So Hard That I wanted To Die — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The entire campus buzzed with gossip.

“Xu Tianxing? That rich kid?”

“Why would someone like him steal a phone?”

“Maybe he has some kind of compulsion, like those drama characters who can’t help stealing?”

He was dragged home by his furious father and beaten so badly that he didn’t show up to class for a week.

When he finally returned, he no longer followed Ning Yuanming around like a shadow.

Ning Yuanming had pulled small tricks against Ning Sui before. When Ning Sui first arrived at the Ning house, their mother had wanted to arrange a room for him, but Ning Yuanming had deliberately mentioned in front of her that Ning Sui preferred to live on campus. Because of that, the room was never prepared.

Ning Sui had never argued or fought back, so Ning Yuanming had always assumed he was weak, someone who didn’t dare resist.

After all, he was the one everyone loved. He had the family’s favor, the circle’s connections, and even Ji Zhilin’s protection.

What did Ning Sui have? Nothing but an orphan’s name and a shabby background.

But this time, Ning Sui had done the unthinkable, he had sent the evidence straight to their mother and Ning Chen. That boldness made Ning Yuanming’s chest tighten with unease.

Why had he suddenly grown the courage to defy him?

Could it be because he married into the Ji family and thought he had someone powerful behind him now?

The more he thought about it, the more bitterness burned in his chest.

If he had known Ning Sui would be so eager to marry Ji Yucheng, he never would have suggested the substitution in the first place.

He had thought Ning Sui would resent it, that he would treat that comatose man with cold disdain and eventually be rejected by the old master.

But things had spiraled in the opposite direction.

Now, he was the one falling behind.

He clenched his fists. No, he couldn’t keep acting rashly. From now on, he would do things quietly, in the dark.

When the phone was finally recovered, Cao Nuo treated Fang Dacheng and Ning Sui to dinner.

“Ah Sui, let me toast to you,” Cao Nuo said, voice trembling slightly. “I really don’t know how to thank you enough.”

“It’s fine,” Ning Sui replied, pushing away the drink. “I don’t drink.”

If he drank, who knew what kind of foolish impulses he might act on later, especially toward his comatose husband for his desire for money, whose very existence tempted him in strange, forbidden ways.

He had gone to such lengths not because of the phone itself, but because it contained irreplaceable photos of Cao Nuo’s late grandmother.

Ning Sui understood. He had lost people too. The Ning family, he had once wanted to treat them as family, but he had long since given up on that.

The only ones who truly mattered to him now were the people from the orphanage, Xiaoyu and Lin Man.

Xiaoyu had died young. Before he passed, they were still in middle school. They used to pass by photo studios, wanting to take a picture together, but never had enough money or courage to go in. In the end, all that was left was a faded memorial photo.

If his own lost phone had contained something like that, he would have gone through heaven and earth to retrieve it too.

So he could completely understand Cao Nuo’s desperation.

Propping his chin on one hand, Ning Sui idly picked at the food in front of him, a distant melancholy shadowing his face.

In the villa far away, Ji Yucheng watched through the surveillance feed. The flickering fire from the street barbecue stall illuminated his little wife’s face, the orange light dancing over his cheeks.

He looked so lonely sitting there, lost in thought. Ji Yucheng couldn’t hear his thoughts, but somehow, he could feel them.

Even in his motionless body, his heart seemed to ache in sympathy.

Outside, the night was freezing, with tiny flakes of snow drifting down. Those two foolish roommates had dragged his delicate wife to eat out in the cold.

Didn’t they realize he could catch a chill?

And afterward, would he have to hail a taxi back alone? Would he forget to call the driver?

Once he got home, tired and cold, he’d take a hot shower…

Ji Yucheng’s heart tightened. His little wife was so fragile. What if he caught a cold?

Young Master Ji was deeply troubled.

System 009 could clearly sense the protective urge swelling in its host’s heart and could not help but complain, “Host, I swear you’re blinded by love. Your little wife doesn’t need your help to deal with people! He’s perfectly capable of driving them insane all by himself. And that Miss Qu? A perfectly good young lady, scared so badly she doesn’t even dare step into the Ji household anymore! Honestly, judging by how twisted and obsessive your little wife can be, who’s the one who needs protection here? You’re still lying there as a vegetable; shouldn’t you be worrying about yourself instead?”

As it got more and more agitated, 009’s connection to the live feed suddenly cut off.

Ji Yucheng’s expression darkened. “Stop your nonsense. Turn it back on. Now!”

The feed flickered back just in time to show Ning Sui receiving a message. It was from Ning Yuanming, asking to meet.

Ji Yucheng hadn’t bothered to remember that name before, he only knew it belonged to his foolish younger brother’s friend but now, he remembered it clearly, and every thought of that person filled him with disgust.

“Are you really going?” Cao Nuo leaned closer to take a peek at the message, his voice full of worry. “What’s he looking for you for? He’s not going to pour milk tea on you, right?”

“Probably to apologize,” Ning Sui said, though he didn’t sound convinced.

Yesterday his mother had called, but he had hung up immediately. Afterward, she sent a string of frantic messages saying she already knew what had happened and would make Ning Yuanming apologize to him.

If possible, Ning Sui would have preferred not to let his mother find out at all. It felt childish, like tattling. But Ning Yuanming was far too irritating. Ning Sui just wanted him to stop causing trouble.

“I’ll go for a bit,” Ning Sui said as he put away his phone. “You guys finish eating.”

The milk tea shop Ning Yuanming had chosen was just around the corner.

As soon as Ning Sui stepped inside, Ning Yuanming’s eyes fixed on him, his expression a complicated mix of emotions.

He had come because his mother forced him to apologize, but the moment he saw Ning Sui’s calm and unruffled face, anger surged back up in his chest, and the words that came out of his mouth veered sharply off track.

“So, you liked Ji Yucheng all along, didn’t you? You used me to get close to him!”

“Oh? You already know?” Ning Sui sat down across from him, blinking innocently before deliberately teasing, “Then I really have to thank you. If it weren’t for you begging the Ning family to let me marry him, I wouldn’t have gotten what I wanted so soon.”

It was one thing to suspect, another entirely to hear it confirmed. Ning Yuanming’s teeth nearly cracked from how hard he was clenching his jaw.

Ning Sui’s light, indifferent tone only made him burn with regret. If he had known Ning Sui would be living so comfortably now, he never would have begged his mother and Ji Zhilin to let him take the marriage instead.

If he had married into the Ji family, the one favored by the old master, the one with the power to pull strings and get special treatment even at school, would have been him.

No! he couldn’t think like that. There was nothing to regret. No matter how much he used to admire that brilliant young master of the Ji family, he would never have lowered himself to serve a man lying in a hospital bed.

The more he wavered, the more he had to convince himself, he was the one who had won. Ning Sui was the one who had lost.

No matter how smug Ning Sui acted, he was still married to a vegetable. That was a fact no one could change.

They both knew where they stood. Since there was no point pretending otherwise, Ning Yuanming no longer bothered to keep up the polite facade.

He leaned forward, lowering his voice, every word bitten out like poison. “Don’t get too full of yourself. Ji Yucheng is nothing but a vegetable. It doesn’t matter if it’s three years or five, even ten or eight, he’s never waking up and when he dies, do you really think Old Master Ji will leave a single cent to an outsider like you?”

He needed Ning Sui to suffer. Only then would he feel satisfied.

“I didn’t marry for money.” Ning Sui smiled faintly, his voice soft but cutting. “I married for Ji Yucheng himself. I like him so much I’d give my life for him. Why would I care if he’s a vegetable?”

He paused, then added with an almost mischievous tilt of his lips, “Actually, it’s better that he’s a vegetable. He won’t resist me.” He leaned back lazily, his smile deepening. “So really, thank you, A’Ming.”

Ning Yuanming froze, face twisting. For a moment he was so furious he could barely breathe.

Every word of the conversation streamed live into Ji Yucheng’s consciousness through 009.

The young master tried to maintain his usual cold composure, but the tips of his ears betrayed him, flushing red.

What was going on with his little wife? Why was he going around declaring his feelings so boldly to others?

Still… it wasn’t for money or power. It was simply because Ning Sui liked him.

Ji Yucheng was now absolutely certain of that, and the warmth that spread through his chest was impossible to suppress.

Just then, System 001 spoke softly in Ning Sui’s mind. “A’Sui, you might have gone too far. He’s reaching for his cup! he’s going to throw water at you!!”

Ning Sui lowered his gaze just in time to see Ning Yuanming’s hand snatch up the glass.

He turned his head slightly.

The next instant, the cup of water splashed not on him but on the man sitting right behind him.

The stranger jumped up, face full of outrage. “Are you insane?”

Ning Yuanming froze, utterly speechless.

001 chuckled in excitement. “You should throw something back. I’ll tell you exactly when…. ”

Ning Sui replied silently, “Forget it. I can’t bring myself to do something so uncivilized.”

Just then, a waiter walked by carrying a large tray stacked with eight cups of milk tea, some hot, some cold.

When someone passed close by carrying drinks or dishes, most people would instinctively lean back a little, just in case of an accident.

Ning Sui glanced up briefly, saw the waiter holding the tray steady, and relaxed again.

Ning Yuanming followed his gaze and also looked over. But the next second, his eyes widened as if he had just seen a ghost.

The tray tilted abruptly, and all eight cups went flying.. Milk tea came pouring straight down over his head.

Two sealed cups bounced off his shoulder and rolled away, but the other six, filled to the brim, drenched him completely. Brown liquid streamed down his hair and face, dripping in sticky rivulets to the floor.

Covered head to toe in black pearl milk tea, Ning Yuanming could only stare at Ning Sui in stunned disbelief.

Ning Sui looked up at the dark sky, utterly unaware of the man watching him from afar.

“…”

Don’t look at him like that, he was shocked too.

……..

Author’s note:

Ning Sui: There are ghosts.

Ji Yucheng: It’s me.

Ning Sui: How barbaric.

Ji Yucheng: …That must not be me, there must be a ghost.

Ji Yucheng revenged his wife 😂😂😂😂😂

Seriously though, some people might be disappointed with Ning Sui’s behavior towards Ji Yucheng but don’t forget! He’s not in love with Ji Yucheng! Ji Yucheng is just a task for him to cash money! If you think logically… I personally won’t mind exploiting Ji Yucheng for money! Because he’s a vegetative person, to me, he can’t even know what I did. Unfortunately here, Ju Yucheng could actually know what’s happening and Ning Sui isn’t aware of it.

I read someone’s comment how they didn’t like this part but if you thing like a sane person… Anyone might actually do it for free money and task assign by system! Our Mc is slowly developing emotional bond with Ji Yucheng but unless Ml wakes up, for Ning Sui he’s just a task to become richer! At least he’s not neglecting him!

what’s your opinion? Do let me know! Different opinion is fine! We are human! We are supposed to have opinion! If others don’t agree with it? It’s okay but be respectful to others thoughts!
