The male lead, Shen Xingbai, grew up with the original owner in the same orphanage.
Because he had promised the headmistress to take care of her, he always treated her with great care. When they were young, she once said they would be together when they grew up—and he took it to heart, treating her as his girlfriend ever since.
To support her education, he even gave up his own chance at schooling, choosing instead to work and earn money so she could attend a top university.
Unfortunately, after seeing the glamorous outside world, she forgot where she came from.
Shen Xingbai was originally written as a devoted, doting boyfriend in the early part of the story—something Ji Rou couldn’t help but envy.
Too bad she didn’t transmigrate into that earlier timeline…
Instead, she arrived just one day before the moment he would be reborn.
All she hopes now is to stop the accident that breaks his leg.
Maybe—just maybe—if that never happens, he won’t be reborn at all.
The chances are slim, but she has to try.
“Driver, can you go any faster?” Ji Rou urges anxiously.
“Miss, this is already the fastest I can go. Any faster and—see over there?”
The driver points ahead at another car being stopped by traffic police for speeding.
Ji Rou: …
By the time she arrives at the construction site, workers have already started hauling bricks.
She grabs a passing worker. “Have you seen Shen Xingbai?”
The man pauses, surprised. “Shen Xingbai? What are you to him?”
The guy had worked here for years, and no one had ever come looking for Shen Xingbai before—let alone such a delicate-looking girl.
“I’m his girlfriend.”
“I have something urgent—I need to see him right away. Can you tell me where he is?” Ji Rou asks, her voice tight with urgency. She’s afraid she might already be too late.
“He’s over at that building ahead, moving bricks. Go straight and turn the corner—you’ll see him.”
“Thank you!”
Ji Rou runs off in the direction he pointed.
Among the crowd of workers in uniforms, she spots Shen Xingbai immediately.
He stands out—nearly 190 cm tall, dressed in worn, faded work clothes, yet strikingly handsome among the rugged laborers.
Ji Rou can’t help but wonder—someone like him could easily find an easier job. Why does every future big shot seem to start out hauling bricks at a construction site?
The thought almost makes her laugh.
At that moment, Shen Xingbai pushes a cart full of bricks into the base of a building reinforced with steel bars.
Ji Rou’s heart leaps into her throat.
Cursing under her breath, she sprints toward him at full speed. Just as she sees a steel bar falling from above, she reacts instinctively—shoving him away with all her strength while stumbling backward herself.
Bang!
A heavy steel bar crashes down from above.
Even though she was mentally prepared, the sound still makes her heart race.
Swallowing hard, she asks shakily, “Shen… Shen Xingbai, are you okay?”
“Cough… Ji Rou… my leg’s hurt,” his hoarse voice comes from ahead.
Her heart sinks.
Didn’t she push him away? Why is he still injured?
As the dust settles, she finally sees him lying on the ground.
She thought her push would move him to safety—but she miscalculated.
This isn’t her original body. She doesn’t have the strength she expected. That push only knocked herself off balance—it didn’t even move him a step.
Panicking, she helps him up. “How bad is it?”
“Cough… it’s nothing. Just got scraped by the falling steel,” Shen Xingbai says softly, trying to reassure her.
Looking at his bloodied leg, Ji Rou can’t tell how serious it is—but if he says it’s fine, then maybe it really is.
So… maybe he won’t be reborn now?
It seems her effort wasn’t completely useless. Otherwise, he wouldn’t even have the strength to speak.
Shen Xingbai looks at her with complicated emotions.
In his mind, Ji Rou was someone who valued cleanliness above all—she would never step foot in a place like a construction site.
Not far away, a coworker who just called the ambulance walks over and jokes, “Hey, Shen Xingbai, you’re lucky your girlfriend came today! If not, your leg might’ve been completely ruined!”
After all, a steel bar weighing dozens of kilos falling from such a height could easily cripple—or kill.
The other workers chime in agreement.
Shen Xingbai also realizes that without Ji Rou, he might not have survived. His gaze softens as he looks at her.
Ji Rou: …
He tries to stand, but suddenly his head throbs violently—like two souls tearing at each other.
With a dull thud, he collapses.
Ji Rou stares in shock, a sense of dread rising in her chest.
Don’t tell me… he’s still going to be reborn?
So even though she stopped his leg from being completely broken, she still couldn’t stop the plot from unfolding?
Ji Rou feels like cursing out loud.
