Xia Longhui quickly said, “This is my wife, Lin Meng, and my son, Xia Yang. He started running a fever yesterday. We need medicine to reduce it.”
Ji Heng nodded, acknowledging, then turned and said, “Bai Qingyu, come over here.”
Bai Qingyu smiled and walked over. He had already noticed the commotion earlier and was waiting for the boss’s instructions.
“Take a look at him.”
“Okay, Boss.”
Xia Longhui and Lin Meng, seeing how gentle and polite he looked, assumed he was a doctor.
“Thank you, doctor.”
Bai Qingyu smiled and said, “I’m not a doctor. Let me check the child.”
Without hesitation, they handed the child over.
Bai Qingyu picked up a chair and laid the child flat. A supernatural ability formed in his hand.
A soft light appeared in his palm, warm yellow rays covering the child’s entire body.
A few minutes later, the child’s breathing gradually stabilized, and the flushed face returned to its normal color.
Xia Longhui and Lin Meng were stunned, watching in shock. Lin Meng was so emotional she nearly collapsed.
She had been tense for days, eating poorly and sleeping little, leaving her extremely weak. She leaned entirely against Xia Longhui.
Bai Qingyu retracted his supernatural ability and handed the child back to Xia Longhui.
“The child is fine. He’ll wake up soon. It’s best to give him something to eat.”
He glanced at the couple’s weakened state, hesitating to say more.
Xia Longhui was deeply moved. With such a supernatural ability, he didn’t even need medicine to treat his son.
With a team like this, he really should shamelessly try to join them.
But he also knew their family were all non-ability users, so the chances were slim.
“Daddy, I want to play with brother.”
Ji Tianyi, seeing Uncle Bai finish, lost interest in the keys in his hand and turned to find someone to play with.
“Xia Yang is still asleep; he can’t play with you,” Tian Le added.
“Then when he wakes up!”
Hearing this, everyone looked at Xia Yang. The child had just woken up and remained quiet at the sight of so many people.
“Yangyang, are you feeling better?” Lin Meng asked quickly.
“Mom, Dad, I’m fine.”
Judging from his voice and condition, the couple knew he was okay.
Ji Tianyi jumped down from the chair, carrying the bread in his hand, and walked over. He looked up at Xia Yang. “Brother, here’s some bread for you. You must be hungry.”
Xia Yang, seeing such a small younger brother offering food, didn’t dare take it at first—but his stomach rumbled loudly.
“You’re so hungry your stomach is growling,” Ji Tianyi said bluntly, ignoring the other’s embarrassment.
Ji Heng saw that the couple were decent and honest and that the child now had a playmate. He spoke, “Sit down and eat something.”
“Ji Tianyi, walk slowly, don’t wobble around.”
Hearing Ji Heng’s instructions, Tian Le quickly brought two chairs for them.
“Sit down, eat something, don’t be polite.”
After the boss spoke, the rest of the team smiled kindly.
Sun Ye handed a skewer of meat to Xia Longhui. “Here, try my skills, old Sun’s specialty.”
Xia Longhui gratefully accepted. “Thank you.”
He no longer hesitated and sat down with his wife and child to eat. They were extremely hungry.
Ji Tianyi tried to find Xia Yang to play, and Xia Yang immediately offered him a skewer from his own hand.
“Thank you, brother.” Ji Tianyi immediately stayed nearby and started eating, refusing to leave.
“You little rascal, eat less or you’ll get so heavy no one can carry you,” Ji Heng teased.
“Dad, I’m not fat at all. Aunt Qiao says I have baby fat, super cute.”
“Yes, and so squeezable,” he added, pinching Ji Tianyi playfully.
“Dad, bad!”
With their playful antics, Xia Longhui’s family relaxed and ate without restraint.
After three days of eating, Xia Longhui felt awkward staying any longer. He quickly asked, “When are you planning to go to the cellar?”
Ji Heng noticed the serious look on his face, and Lin Meng and Xia Yang beside him looked pale, hesitant.
“What? Is there a problem at the cellar?”
Tian Le noticed their strange mood and asked.
“Well…” Xia Longhui hesitated, then said, “A few people have tried to go to the cellar for supplies these past days, but there are so many zombies, most never return.”
“Oh? Just that?”
“Yes, isn’t that serious enough?”
Xia Longhui didn’t understand. They had been starving and avoiding going out to prevent becoming zombie food. Yet these people didn’t seem surprised at all; they even acted as if it were nothing.
This was the difference between those with strength and those without. He suddenly felt that going there might not be as hopeless as he feared.
“Husband, I’ll go with you.”
Lin Meng wanted to stick together. In such an apocalypse, if only she and the child remained, she didn’t know if she could survive.
“You still need to take care of Yangyang,” Xia Longhui said, his words weighted with meaning.
Lin Meng tried to feign misunderstanding. She didn’t want to endure staying behind alone with the child. But how could she abandon Xia Yang?
“Okay.”
“Dad, I can go too. I’m not afraid of the monsters outside.”
Xia Yang understood the danger outside and didn’t want Xia Longhui to take risks. But this time, Dad had to go because he was sick. How could he be so helpless?
“Yangyang, you’re already a boy now. When Dad isn’t home, you need to help take care of Mom. Didn’t you forget?”
“Alright then.”
Seeing the family reluctantly preparing, Ji Heng decided to recruit the three into the team—it would save him from having to escort them back later.
They wouldn’t return here after departure.
Meanwhile, the others in the warehouse, who had been jealous while the family ate, now looked with sympathy and pity upon hearing Xia Longhui mention the cellar, as if watching someone’s last meal before execution.
“You three will go together,” Ji Heng announced.
“What? This…”
Xia Longhui wanted to refuse. He thought even if he died, at least his wife and child could survive. He couldn’t think further.
But glancing at Ji Heng’s team, all calm and composed, he realized that with so many ability users, they could probably trust them.
It might not be as dangerous as he feared.
“Husband, let’s stay together as a family.”
Lin Meng firmly held his hand, silently saying with her eyes that they would die together if it came to that.
“Okay.” Xia Longhui no longer hesitated.
