The first thing Kael noticed was the silence.

Not the absence of sound—but the kind that pressed against your ears, as if the world itself was holding its breath.

He stood at the edge of the Abyss.Full novel: AFTERMATH: The Weight of Choice — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Behind him, the world still made sense.

Wind moved.

Leaves rustled.

People lied to themselves about control.

In front of him— Nothing moved.

The Abyss did not breathe.

It did not shift.

It simply was.

Endless.

Patient.

Waiting.

“Still time to turn back.” The voice came from behind.

Cairos.

Kael didn’t turn.

“If I turn back,” Kael said quietly, “nothing changes.” “That’s the point,” Cairos replied.

“You live.” Kael almost smiled.

Almost.

“I’m not trying to live.” That answer hung between them longer than it should have.

Cairos stepped closer, boots crunching against gravel that felt too loud for this place.

“You think going down there fixes anything?” he asked.

“The Abyss doesn’t solve problems.

It eats them.” Kael finally looked over his shoulder.

“Good,” he said.

Cairos frowned.

“Good?” “Then maybe it’ll choke.” For a second—just a second—Cairos didn’t have a response.

That was how this always went.

Kael wasn’t reckless.

He was worse.

He was decided.

“…You won’t come back the same,” Cairos said finally.

Kael nodded once.

“That’s the point.” Silence returned.

Real silence this time.

Cairos exhaled sharply.

“Then at least tell me this isn’t about revenge.” Kael looked back at the Abyss.

Dark.

Infinite.

Honest.

“It’s not,” he said.

That was the truth.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Without another word, Kael stepped forward.

The moment his foot crossed the threshold— The world changed.

Not visually.

Fundamentally.

Sound didn’t disappear.

It stopped mattering.

Gravity didn’t shift.

It lost authority.

Kael felt it immediately.

The Abyss wasn’t a place.

It was a condition.

A state where meaning had to be earned—or it didn’t exist at all.

The ground beneath him wasn’t ground.

It was something pretending to be solid because he expected it to be.

That expectation wavered.

So did the ground.

Kael didn’t panic.

Panic assumed rules.

There were none here.

He took another step.

And the Abyss noticed.

It wasn’t a creature.

Not a presence.

But something observed him anyway.

Not with eyes.

With relevance.

Kael felt himself being measured.

Not his strength.

Not his skill.

Something deeper.

Something worse.

Why are you here?

The question didn’t echo.

It existed.

Kael didn’t hesitate.

“Because no one else will stay.” For the first time— The Abyss responded.

The ground stabilized.

The darkness deepened.

And something shifted far below.

Not awakening.

Not moving.

Just… interested.

Kael exhaled slowly.

“Good,” he murmured.

His shadow stretched unnaturally behind him.

Then forward.

Then around him.

Not obeying.

Aligning.

The deeper he walked, the less the world resembled anything familiar.

Shapes existed without form.

Distance folded incorrectly.

Time felt like it was deciding whether to pass or not.

And still— Kael kept going.

Minutes passed.

Or hours.

Or neither.

Eventually, the Abyss decided he had gone far enough.

The ground cracked.

Not violently.

Intentionally.

Something rose from below—not a creature, not fully.

A fragment of will given shape.

A test.

Kael didn’t draw a weapon.

He didn’t have one.

The thing lunged anyway.

Fast.

Too fast.

Kael didn’t dodge.

He moved just enough.

The attack missed.

Not because he was faster— But because the Abyss allowed the mistake.

Kael understood immediately.

“This isn’t about winning,” he said.

The thing paused.

“…It’s about whether I stay.” The Abyss did not confirm.

It didn’t need to.

The next attack came harder.

Closer.

More precise.

Kael stumbled.

Fell to one knee.

Pain exploded through his ribs.

Real pain.

Honest pain.

He tasted blood.

And smiled.

“Finally,” he whispered.

The thing attacked again.

Kael didn’t block.

Didn’t run.

He endured.

Each hit heavier than the last.

Each mistake punished without mercy.

Minutes blurred.

Bones cracked.

Breathing became optional.

But Kael didn’t leave.

Didn’t beg.

Didn’t break.

Eventually— The attacks stopped.

Not because he won.

Because he remained.

The Abyss shifted again.

And this time… It accepted him.

Not as master.

Not as equal.

But as something far more dangerous.

Someone who would not run.

Kael collapsed onto his back, staring into a sky that wasn’t there.

His chest rose slowly.

Pain anchored him.

Existence returned.

Barely.

“…So this is how it starts,” he muttered.

The Abyss answered—not with words, but with presence.

And deep below— Something ancient turned its attention fully toward him.

Not with hunger.

Not with rage.

But with a quiet, terrible curiosity.

Kael closed his eyes.

And for the first time since stepping forward— He understood one simple truth.

He had not entered the Abyss.

The Abyss had accepted his invitation.

And it was coming to see what he would do next.

This is only the beginning of Kael’s journey.

Things may seem unclear now, but every detail has a purpose.

Thanks for giving my story a chance.
