The voices eventually stopped.

The Abyss became quiet again.

Kael remained seated against the black stone wall, staring into the darkness.Full novel: AFTERMATH: The Weight of Choice — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Shade sat several feet away.

Neither had spoken for a long time.

Kael finally broke the silence.

“You’re avoiding me.” Shade looked at him.

“No.” “You’ve been doing that since we entered this place.” Shade lowered its head.

Kael sighed.

“I’m not asking what the Abyss knows.” He paused.

“I’m asking what you know.” Shade said nothing.

Kael looked at the creature carefully.

“You said you were made.” A slight nod.

“To replace something.” Another nod.

“What?” Shade’s fingers curled against the ground.

“I don’t know.” Kael frowned.

“Then what do you remember?” Shade closed its eyes.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then it whispered: “Dark.” Kael waited.

“Cold.” Another pause.

“Voices.” “Whose?” “I don’t know.” Shade touched its chest.

“Pain.” Kael’s expression softened.

“What did they call you?” Shade looked at him.

“They didn’t.” That answer stayed between them.

Kael looked away.

“So you didn’t have a name.” Shade shook its head.

“You didn’t have a purpose?” A pause.

“Purpose.” Shade seemed to struggle with the word.

Then it pointed at Kael.

“You.” Kael understood.

“They made you to become me.” Shade nodded.

Kael leaned his head against the wall.

For some reason, that bothered him more than he expected.

“Did you hate me?” Shade looked confused.

“Why?” “Because I was the thing you were supposed to replace.” Shade stared at him for several seconds.

Then shook its head.

“No.” “Why?” Shade moved closer.

It sat beside him.

“First…” It struggled to form the words.

“…thing I saw.” Kael looked at it.

“You saw me?” Shade nodded.

“Not face.” It touched its chest.

“Feeling.” Kael remained silent.

“Lonely.” Shade looked down.

“Afraid.” Then it looked at Kael.

“Same.” Kael didn’t know what to say.

Shade continued.

“Thought…” It paused.

“Thought if become you…” Its voice became quieter.

“…not alone.” Kael stared at the ground.

For once, he didn’t have an answer.

The Abyss had created Shade as a replacement.

But Shade hadn’t wanted to replace him.

It had wanted to belong somewhere.

Kael looked at the creature.

“Do you know what I think?” Shade shook its head.

“I think whoever made you got one thing wrong.” Shade waited.

“You don’t look like me.” Shade’s head tilted.

Kael smiled faintly.

“Not anymore.” Shade looked down at its hands.

“But…” Kael continued.

“…that’s not a bad thing.” Silence.

Then Shade asked: “What am I?” Kael thought about it.

The answer should have been easy.

A creature.

A copy.

An Abyssal creation.

But none of those felt right anymore.

“I don’t know.” Shade looked disappointed.

Kael continued.

“But you don’t have to know yet.” Shade stared at him.

“You don’t have to become me.” A pause.

“You don’t have to replace anyone.” Kael held out his hand.

“You can just be Shade.” The creature looked at his hand.

Then slowly placed its own against it.

Nothing happened.

No notification.

No Abyssal voice.

No system message.

Just two hands touching in the dark.

Shade looked at him.

“Shade.” Kael nodded.

“Yeah.” The creature repeated it.

“Shade.” For the first time, the name sounded like it belonged to someone.

Not something.

Someone.

Kael stood.

“We should keep moving.” Shade stood beside him.

“Where?” Kael looked ahead.

“I don’t know.” Shade waited.

Kael glanced at it.

“But wherever we end up…” He started walking.

“…we go together.” Shade followed.

They walked for hours.

No monsters came.

No visions.

No voices.

The Abyss simply allowed them to move.

Eventually, Kael noticed something strange.

The walls had changed.

The names were gone.

The cracks were gone.

Even the black stone beneath their feet looked different.

Almost peaceful.

Shade stopped.

Kael turned.

“What?” Shade pointed toward the ground.

A small white flower had grown through the stone.

Kael crouched.

He touched it carefully.

It didn’t disappear.

He stared at it.

“The Abyss can create something like this?” Shade shook its head.

Kael looked at it.

“Then who did?” Shade didn’t answer.

Kael smiled.

“Forget it.” He stood.

“One mystery at a time.” They continued walking.

Behind them, the flower slowly opened.

And for the first time in centuries, something living grew inside the deepest part of the Abyss.

Sometimes, characters need a moment to breathe.

Shade was created as a replacement.

But being created for a purpose doesn’t mean that purpose has to define you.

For the first time, Kael doesn’t see Shade as something the Abyss created.

He sees Shade as Shade.

And maybe that’s where their real story begins.
