Claire Wilson and her family went to Kempinski for dinner while Wendell stayed at home, sulking.
He had believed it would be impossible for Claire to win the contract. Yet, to his surprise, it had taken her only half an hour to secure a sixty-million-dollar contract.
At that moment, Harold called him to complain.
As soon as Wendell answered, Harold shouted, “Hey, Wendell! What the hell? I gave you the opportunity to pursue my cousin, but you turned your back on me and helped her win the Emgrand Group contract. How could you do this to me?”
Wendell shook his head disdainfully.
“What are you talking about? I didn't do anything!”
Harold asked again, “Wendell, be honest with me. Did you sleep with my cousin?”
Wendell was too embarrassed to admit that he had nothing to do with Claire's success. If he did, wouldn't that mean admitting that he had failed?
He mumbled sheepishly, “Yeah, Harold. I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you whenever I get the chance.”
Harold sighed before quickly asking, “My cousin was a virgin, wasn't she? I don't believe she's ever slept with that loser.”
Claire was still a virgin.
Wendell realized that he could use the lie to make himself look powerful and further damage Claire's relationship with her husband.
A sly thought crossed his mind, and he gave a smug laugh.
“Yes, your cousin was a virgin. She was so charming that I couldn't resist her. Hahaha!”
Harold's bitter voice came through the phone.
“If that's true, please don't forget me whenever you get any opportunities in the future, okay, buddy?”
“Don't worry,” Wendell replied casually.
Just then, a panicked voice suddenly came from the other end of the phone.
“Wendell, we have a problem! The Emgrand Group has canceled all its projects with us!”
Wendell immediately fell silent.
What did this mean?
His family was about to suffer a huge loss!
He quickly asked, “Dad, what happened?”
His father sounded confused and incredulous.
“I don't know either! I've been at the office these past few days. I haven't met many people, let alone offended anyone.”
Wendell thought for a moment.
“Dad, could it be that Emgrand's new chairman is carrying out a major restructuring after taking over the company?”
Mr. Jones suddenly seemed to realize something.
“I've spoken with Doris Young several times, but she said that their chairman doesn't meet with visitors.”
“Then what should we do?”
Mr. Jones fell silent as he considered the situation.
After a moment, he said, “Oh, right! The Wilson family's banquet is tomorrow night. They said they've invited the chairman. Let's find an opportunity to meet him there.”
“All right!” Wendell immediately agreed. “Let's go together tomorrow!”
The next day, the entire Wilson family was overjoyed.
It was an extremely important moment for the family.
Overnight, news that the Wilson family had won the contract with Emgrand Group—and that the chairman had been invited to their banquet—had spread throughout Aurouss Hilll.
For the occasion, Charlie found his most expensive suit and wore it to the hotel where the banquet was being held.
As Charlie arrived, Wendell Jones, dressed in an expensive suit with his hair neatly styled, stepped out of his car.
Wendell noticed Charlie and immediately looked him up and down with contempt.
A trace of hostility flashed in his eyes as he sneered, “Where did you find that fake suit? You look like a dog trying to dress up like a gentleman.”
Charlie replied calmly, “What does that have to do with you?”
Wendell curled his lips into a mocking smile.
“You may have nothing to do with me, but your wife is a completely different story.”
Charlie frowned slightly.
“What story?”
Rumors had been circulating that Claire had secured the Emgrand Group contract because of her intimate relationship with Wendell.
Otherwise, people wondered, how could someone with Claire's limited experience—and the relatively weak Wilson Group—have won such an important contract?
Seeing that a crowd was gradually gathering around them, Wendell deliberately raised his voice.
“Why do you think Claire was able to win the contract with Emgrand Group?”
Charlie stared coldly at him.
“Why?”
Wendell's lips curled into an arrogant smile.
“Because of me, of course! Claire is my woman now, so I did everything I could to help her succeed in negotiations with Emgrand Group.”
He paused and looked directly at Charlie.
“If you have any dignity left, be a man and divorce her as soon as possible.”
Although some people had already suspected that this was the reason Claire had won the contract, they couldn't help but gasp when Wendell openly claimed it.
So it was because of him?
Had Claire really won the contract because of her relationship with Wendell Jones?
Charlie let out a cold laugh.
“Because of you?”
He looked at Wendell with disdain.
“Who do you think you are?”
