Chapters 3: Blood and Ice

Apocalypse Conquest: Isekaied With The Harem System

The cellar door creaked open, revealing a world choked in ash and ruin. Kael stepped out first, his tall frame silhouetted against the crimson sky. The air was thick with the stench of decay and the distant echoes of screams. Lyra followed close behind, her glacial ice sword shimmering faintly in the dim light. The once-proud streets of the capital were now a graveyard of shattered buildings and smoldering rubble.

"Stay sharp," Kael said, his voice low and commanding. "The Palace isn't far, but this place is crawling with scavengers and worse."

Lyra nodded, her piercing blue eyes scanning the devastation. "The Abyssal Horde has left nothing untouched. We'll need to cut through whatever's left standing."

Kael flexed his fingers, feeling the unfamiliar cold surge through him. The Frost Maiden bloodline pulsed within his Yang core, a new power waiting to be tested. 'Let's see what this can do,' he thought.

He raised his hand, and a sudden wave of frost erupted from his palm, freezing a patch of rubble solid. The ice spread rapidly, encasing debris in a crystalline shell before shattering it into dust. The chill lingered in the air, a stark contrast to the oppressive heat of the burning ruins.

[Bloodline Stabilized.]

[Frost Maiden Bloodline Synchronized.]

Lyra's eyes widened, a rare flicker of awe crossing her stern features. "You've already mastered it? That's… impressive, Master."

Kael smirked, flexing his hand again. The frost coiled around his fingers like a living thing. "Your bloodline suits me, Lyra. It's cold, precise, and devastating. Just like the woman who gave it to me."

Lyra's cheeks flushed faintly, but she quickly masked it with her usual stoic demeanor. "Save the flattery for when we're not surrounded by enemies."

They moved cautiously through the ruined streets, the silence broken only by the occasional crash of collapsing buildings. The crimson sky bled into the horizon, casting everything in an eerie red glow. Kael's Appraisal Eye flickered as he scanned the area, his sharp gaze catching every detail.

[Appraisal Complete: No immediate threats detected. Mana signatures remain faint.]

"Too quiet," Lyra muttered, her grip tightening on her ice sword. "Something doesn't feel right."

Kael nodded, his instincts screaming a warning. He stopped abruptly, raising a hand to halt Lyra. A faint ripple of mana brushed against his senses, sharp and malicious. His eyes narrowed. "Ambush. Stay close."

The ground beneath them exploded, sending shards of concrete flying. Kael shielded Lyra with a quick burst of Glacial Domain, freezing the debris midair. A dozen figures emerged from the shadows, their crimson-tinted armor marking them as Royal Guards. Their faces were twisted with corruption, their eyes glowing faintly with Abyssal energy.

"Surrender, intruders!" the lead guard snarled, his voice distorted and guttural. "The Palace is ours now. You're not getting past us."

Lyra stepped forward, her ice sword gleaming dangerously. "Traitors. You've sold your souls to the Abyss."

The guard laughed, a sickening sound. "Better the Abyss than a weak fool like you."

Kael cracked his neck, his Yang energy flaring to life. "Wrong answer." He lunged forward, his movements a blur of speed and precision. His fist connected with the lead guard's chest, freezing his armor solid before shattering it into pieces. The man screamed, collapsing in a heap of frost and blood.

Lyra joined the fray, her sword slicing through the air with deadly grace. She danced between the guards, each strike freezing limbs or severing arteries. The corrupted soldiers fell one by one, their cries of pain swallowed by the icy silence.

[Hostile Squad Eliminated.]

But as the last guard collapsed, the ground shook violently. A deep, guttural roar echoed through the ruins, sending chills down their spines. Kael and Lyra exchanged a glance, their instincts screaming danger.

[Abyssal Rift Detected.]

[Threat Assessment Updated.]

The air split apart, revealing a massive Abyssal portal. A towering figure stepped through, its grotesque form barely contained by the mortal plane. Gorek, an A-Rank Demon, stood before them, his jagged horns scraping the sky and his clawed hands dripping with gore. His skin was a patchwork of burnt flesh and pulsating veins, and his eyes burned with primal malice.

"Well, well," Gorek rumbled, his voice like grinding stone. "What do we have here? A couple of insects trying to play savior?"

Lyra's grip tightened on her sword, her expression grim. "An A-Rank… This isn't good."

Kael's Appraisal Eye activated instantly, analyzing the threat.

[Gorek: A-Rank Abyssal Demon

"Stay back," Kael ordered, his voice steady despite the rising tension. "This one's mine."

Lyra hesitated but nodded. "Be careful, Master. He's stronger than he looks."

Gorek laughed, his massive claws flexing. "Big words for such a tiny man. Let's see how long you last."

The demon lunged, his speed belying his size. Kael barely dodged, the ground cracking apart where Gorek's claws struck. The force of the blow sent shockwaves rippling through the air, forcing Lyra to shield herself with Glacial Domain.

Kael countered with a burst of Frost Maiden mana, freezing Gorek's arm solid. But the demon shattered the ice effortlessly, his laughter ringing through the ruins. "Is that all you've got?"

Kael gritted his teeth, his Yang energy surging. He launched a flurry of icy strikes, each one freezing patches of Gorek's flesh only for the demon to rip through them like paper. The sheer physical strength was overwhelming, and every clash sent Kael skidding backward.

Lyra joined the fight, her ice sword slicing through Gorek's leg. The demon roared in pain, but his gore-filled wounds quickly regenerated, his Demonic Resilience negating the damage.

"This isn't working!" Lyra shouted, her voice strained. "We need a new plan!"

Kael dodged another devastating swing, his mind racing. 'We're barely holding him off. We need to hit him harder.'

But Gorek wasn't giving them time to think. His Gore Field activated, transforming the battlefield into a nightmarish landscape of blood and ice. Tendrils of blood erupted from the ground, lashing out at Kael and Lyra with deadly precision.

Kael shielded them with a wall of frost, but the strain was starting to show. His mana was draining fast, and Gorek showed no signs of slowing down.

Lyra gritted her teeth, her resolve hardening. "We can't let him win, Master. Not here."

Kael nodded, his eyes blazing with determination. "Then we push harder. Together."

The two of them charged, their powers combining in a storm of frost and yang energy. But Gorek met their assault head-on, his massive claws tearing through their defenses like they were nothing.

Gorek's laughter echoed through the ruins, a guttural sound that vibrated in Kael's bones. The demon's claws dripped with fresh blood—Lyra's blood—from where he'd grazed her shoulder. The wound steamed in the cold air, her Frost Maiden bloodline already sealing it with a thin layer of ice.

Kael wiped a trickle of blood from his lip, tasting iron. 'This bastard's tough.' His Golden Yang energy pulsed, a furnace beneath his skin, but Gorek's Demonic Resilience was shrugging off their attacks like they were nothing.

Lyra adjusted her grip on her ice sword, her breath fogging in the frigid air. "We need to hit him harder. Together."

Kael nodded. "On my mark."

Gorek charged, his massive form a blur of muscle and malice. Kael met him head-on, their collision sending shockwaves through the ground. The demon's claws scraped against Kael's reinforced forearms, sparks flying as Frost Maiden mana clashed with Abyssal corruption.

"Now!" Kael roared.

Lyra moved like lightning, her sword plunging into Gorek's side. Frost spread from the wound, crawling up his ribs. The demon snarled, backhanding her away, but Kael was already pivoting. He channeled Golden Yang into his fist and drove it straight into Gorek's frozen flank.

The impact was catastrophic.

Gorek's ribcage shattered like glass, ice and bone exploding outward in a spray of gore. Arterial blood geysered from the wound, painting the ruins crimson. The demon staggered, his regenerative flesh struggling to knit itself back together—but Kael didn't let up.

He grabbed Gorek's remaining horn and wrenched his head down, kneeing him square in the jaw. Teeth shattered. The demon's skull cracked audibly, but still, he refused to die.

Lyra lunged again, her blade flashing. This time, she severed Gorek's arm at the elbow. The limb hit the ground with a wet thud, fingers twitching.

Gorek howled, swinging wildly with his remaining arm. Kael ducked under the blow and drove his fist into the demon's throat, crushing his windpipe. Gorek gagged, black blood bubbling from his lips.

"Finish him," Kael ordered.

Lyra didn't hesitate. She reversed her grip on her sword and plunged it upward through Gorek's jaw, into his brain. The demon's eyes bulged, his body seizing as frost erupted from within, encasing his skull in ice.

Kael delivered the final blow—a brutal stomp to Gorek's chest. The frozen demon shattered like a statue, chunks of flesh and ice scattering across the battlefield.

Kael exhaled, rolling his shoulders. The fight had taken more out of him than he'd expected. His knuckles were split, his muscles burned, and his mana reserves were dangerously low. But they weren't done yet.

He turned toward the surviving Royal Guards, the ones who had fled when Gorek appeared. They were scrambling to their feet, their faces pale with terror.

"Please—" one begged.

Kael didn't let him finish.

His hand shot out, Frost Maiden mana lancing through the air. The guard's scream was cut short as his body froze solid, his expression locked in eternal horror. Kael clenched his fist, and the ice shattered, reducing the man to bloody chunks.

The remaining guards turned to run.

Lyra moved like a silver blur, her sword carving through them with surgical precision. Heads rolled. Arteries burst. The stench of blood and voided bowels filled the air.

In seconds, it was over.

Kael stepped over the corpses, his boots leaving crimson prints in the ash. He wiped his hands on his pants, his breathing steadying. "No loose ends."

Lyra sheathed her sword, her expression unreadable. "They chose their side."

Kael glanced at the looming silhouette of the Royal Palace, its spires piercing the blood-red sky. "Now we choose ours."

Together, they walked forward, leaving the carnage behind.
