Watching the mother and son walk farther away, Jiang Li turned around, about to pick up the things on the ground, when she saw Gu Jin approaching from not too far away.
“I heard the commotion and came over to take a look. I was about to step in and help, but then I saw you beat them all down.”
“You don’t think I’m ruthless?” She had killed three people in the blink of an eye. Most people would probably think that was cruel.
“No.” Gu Jin shook his head. “What you did was right. People like that don’t deserve mercy. If you hadn’t killed them, they would’ve continued harming even more people.”
Gu Jin did not think Jiang Li had done anything wrong. On the contrary, he admired this side of her character.
“And your fighting skills were impressive too.”
“Thanks. I learned some basic training before.” For some reason, hearing him say that made her feel relieved, and even a little happy.
Gu Jin coughed lightly. “Uh… here, you should take this. I think you might need it.”
He handed Jiang Li a black plastic bag. The man who had been perfectly normal just moments ago suddenly had reddened ears, and he did not even dare look directly at her.
Jiang Li accepted it in confusion. The bag was quite full and surprisingly heavy.
“What is it—”
Before she could finish speaking, even someone as calm as Jiang Li instantly blushed after seeing what was inside. The entire bag was filled with sanitary pads.
“Um… thank you…” Jiang Li thanked him awkwardly. Then she glanced at the watch on her wrist. “It’s almost twelve. Have you eaten yet? Why don’t we find a place to sit and eat something?”
“Sure. I haven’t eaten either.”
The two found a folding table inside one of the stores, moved over two small stools, and sat down to eat. The table was probably normally used by employees for their meals.
Jiang Li took out two boxed lunches from her backpack and handed one to Gu Jin. She had placed them in the bag earlier, so they had already gone cold. If she had taken them directly out of her space while they were still hot, it would have been far too suspicious. Although she could have just eaten bread, Jiang Li still did not want to mistreat herself.
“I made these myself. The taste should be pretty good, though they’ve gotten a bit cold. If you don’t mind, you can eat this.”
Gu Jin glanced at the boxed lunch in front of him, then at the compressed biscuits in his own hand, and decisively chose the boxed lunch instead.
“Thank you.”
After accepting the lunch box, Gu Jin took out a carton of pure milk from his bag and handed it to Jiang Li.
“This is for you.”
Jiang Li glanced at the milk, reached out to accept it, and thanked him.
After finishing their meal, the two continued searching the mall for supplies. In the end, both of them had to make several trips carrying things before finally driving back home.
When they returned downstairs to the residential complex, Jiang Li immediately noticed many malicious gazes directed at them. Still, the drive into the underground garage went very smoothly. Jiang Li had thought they might run into trouble on the way back, but unexpectedly, everything had gone without incident.
In reality, some people in the complex were simply observing, while others did not dare act. After all, those three men had previously caused a death, and many people had seen them go looking for Jiang Li and Gu Jin. Yet afterward, no one ever saw the three of them again. Everyone knew they had definitely been dealt with.
At the time, people had seen the three men enter the building, but no one knew which exact floor they had gone to. In the entire building, the only person who seemed capable of handling them was Gu Jin. Jiang Li herself had been completely overlooked. No one believed a young woman could have such ability, so no one dared casually provoke Gu Jin.
Jiang Li did not know that because of Gu Jin, she had already avoided a lot of trouble. Of course, even if trouble came, she was not afraid. After surviving six years in the apocalypse, she definitely possessed combat ability. Although after being reborn her current body could not compare to her previous life’s condition, she had still been training continuously over the past six months. Combined with all the survival experience she had from the apocalypse, dealing with ordinary people was absolutely not a problem for her.
After parking the car, Jiang Li and Gu Jin carried the supplies from the vehicle back upstairs. Unexpectedly, they had not run into any trouble downstairs, but ended up encountering some after returning.
The moment Jiang Li saw Chen Sisi at the stairwell, her first thought was: here she comes again, bringing along all her sugary, pretentious talk. Although this time, at least she obediently was not wearing a white dress anymore.
Sure enough, the moment Chen Sisi opened her mouth, she said, “Big brother, you brought back so many things. Could you maybe give me a little? I really haven’t eaten in a long time. Can’t you pity me a bit?” Chen Sisi spoke to Gu Jin in a deliberately cutesy voice.
Chen Sisi had already seen them when they came back, so she had been waiting at the stairwell the whole time, which led to the current scene.
Jiang Li felt that maybe only magic could defeat magic, so she deliberately copied Chen Sisi’s tone and said,
“Big sister, no way, no way. Are you seriously asking us to give you the things we spent the entire day searching for under the blazing sun?”
“So, big sister, are you really that cruel? You want to freeload off the things we worked so hard to find?”
Hearing Jiang Li’s words, Chen Sisi became furious, yet could not openly lose her temper.
“I was talking to big brother, not you. Besides, I never said I wanted to take them for free.”
“Oh really? Then what are you planning to trade for them?” Jiang Li asked.
“I… Why do you care what I’m trading? Anyway, I’m not trading with you.” Of course, Chen Sisi had nothing she could actually use in exchange, but she was too embarrassed to admit it in front of Jiang Li.
“Oh really? Then why are you blocking my way? Move aside.”
Startled by Jiang Li’s sharp tone, Chen Sisi subconsciously stepped to the side, successfully allowing Jiang Li to pass.
Seeing that she had moved, Jiang Li simply carried her things upstairs and left, not caring about what happened behind her. Anyone wanting to freeload off her could forget about it.
However, Gu Jin was not as lucky. The step that Chen Sisi had moved aside on just happened to block his path.
“Big brother, I…” Chen Sisi was about to say something more when Gu Jin interrupted her.
“Don’t call me big brother. I don’t know you. Besides, you look older than me.” After saying that, he walked around her and strode upstairs.
Chen Sisi was so angry she kept stomping her foot. There was no time for her to say anything else, so she could only return to her room. She had always had people pursuing her before and was quite confident in her appearance, but she had unexpectedly hit a wall twice with them. She swore that next time, she would stay far away from them.
Upstairs, Jiang Li could not help but laugh when she heard what Gu Jin had said. She did not expect him to have such a sharp tongue.
When Jiang Li reached upstairs and was about to open the door, Gu Jin finally caught up. She said to him, “What you said just now was really good, direct and to the point. I guess she probably won’t show up in front of us again.”
“She was wearing too much white makeup. I really couldn’t tell her age.” Gu Jin replied seriously.
“Pfft, hahaha. You’re kind of cute,” Jiang Li said, finding him a bit blunt in a straight-male sort of way, but also unexpectedly cute.
Seeing Jiang Li laugh so happily and even call him cute, Gu Jin’s ears quietly turned red.
Of course, Jiang Li did not notice this.
The two of them had brought back a lot of things, so it took several trips to carry everything upstairs. After storing everything properly, they went back down again to continue. Fortunately, they did not run into Chen Sisi again afterward, nor did they encounter any other trouble.
