A zombie wearing a high school uniform suddenly appeared behind the off-road vehicle, lunging toward Lu Chuan.
“Zombie behind you, dodge!”
Tang Yun’s breath hitched, and she immediately slid down the climbing rope.
Just as the zombie tried to sink its teeth into Lu Chuan’s neck, he dodged in time.
Tang Yun’s trekking pole pierced a hole through the zombie’s head. The bloody zombie collapsed backward, and the stench of rot and blood filled the air.
She picked up Lu Chuan’s mountaineering axe and struggled to break open the door on the first floor of the building. “Let’s go.”
Tang Yun helped the injured Lu Chuan inside. Behind them, the zombies went into a frenzy, their roars echoing continuously.
Lu Chuan was tall and heavy, and Tang Yun gritted her teeth as she supported him. Stumbling, the two made their way up to the rooftop, kicked the door shut, and blocked the pursuing zombies behind it.
Tang Yun took out a first-aid kit and handed it to Lu Chuan before turning away and sitting to the side, catching her breath. “Dr. Lu, you’re injured again.”
Lu Chuan began treating his wound without a word. The injury was on his thigh, with a piece of glass still embedded in the flesh.
“Still, it’s fortunate you weren’t infected with the Zombie Virus.”
Soon, he bandaged the wound and thanked Tang Yun sincerely.
Seeing his pale lips from blood loss, Tang Yun asked, “What’s the plan now?”
Lu Chuan’s Adam’s apple bobbed. “The wound isn’t serious. I couldn’t move earlier because, like you last time, I was knocked unconscious.”
This was a stroke of luck amid the chaos.
Tang Yun took out a can of beef to heat up, lost in thought.
This was the fifth day since she bound the Apocalypse Survival System. She had to reach City A Shelter No. 3 within twenty-five days.
Would she really die if she didn’t enter the safe haven within the allotted time?
Even in this apocalyptic world, as long as she made it to the safe haven, the nation’s strength would ensure hope for post-disaster reconstruction.
Thinking this way, was it really necessary to arrive on time?
With so many unexpected events on the road, she couldn’t be sure she’d succeed.
[Warning! E01 must adopt a proper attitude toward the game. Do not circumvent the rules. Failure to complete the mission will result in elimination!]
Elimination?
Survival of the fittest, the weak will be erased?
Could this be the Human Reduction Plan?
The system’s electric voice sent a shiver down Tang Yun’s spine. Her actions were already being monitored.
After finishing the canned food, Lu Chuan rested for a few hours while Tang Yun kept watch. The commotion outside had quieted down significantly.
Earlier, when a group of zombies in high school uniforms suddenly appeared, Lu Chuan’s expression had turned grim.
G Town High School had likely fallen, and those working there were probably in grave danger.
On the fifth day of the apocalypse, around 2 p.m., Tang Yun and Lu Chuan prepared to set off again.
Just then, shouts echoed from the surroundings.
“Is anyone there?”
“Are there any survivors? Come out quickly!”
Tang Yun and Lu Chuan exchanged glances and hid on the rooftop, observing the direction of the voices.
On the road not far away, several zombies in high school uniforms were wandering but were soon cut down by a few young men in protective suits armed with weapons.
“We’re from the G Town High School Protection Station. If anyone’s alive, make a sound. We’ll take you to G Town High School for shelter.”
At first, no one responded, but the noise gradually drew out more zombies.
As the zombies were nearly eliminated and the men in protective suits were about to leave, a few people quickly emerged from between the buildings.
With this beginning, more survivors soon came out.
Tang Yun looked at Lu Chuan. “Should we follow along as well?”
Lu Chuan nodded. “Let’s go take a look. After all, our destination is G Town High School anyway.”
The two joined the group and soon learned that most of the people in protective suits were former teachers and security guards from the school.
This protective station had been organized and established by Principal Liu of G Town High School, and it still housed many surviving students and teachers.
Tang Yun saw that most of the school’s facilities had already been damaged. The open grounds and flower beds had been dug up to plant vegetables, and the surviving students were currently hoeing the soil and planting potatoes in the vegetable patches.
“Fortunately, the school is situated on relatively high ground, and the courtyard walls are sturdy, which allowed this protective station to be established,” explained the middle-aged man leading the team in a protective suit. His surname was Fan, and his name was Fan Zhuo.
He was somewhat overly attentive toward Tang Yun, deliberately walking beside her to explain the situation at the school’s protective station.
“The school has no electricity, but there is a diesel generator that provides power for a short while during critical moments.”
“The protective station has people patrolling twenty-four hours a day.”
Fan Zhuo glanced at the composed woman beside him. Her clothes were neat, her complexion fair, and in this apocalyptic world, she possessed a breathtaking beauty that made it hard to look away.
Tang Yun gave a faint nod, truly not wanting to engage with this person.
From start to finish, Fan Zhuo exuded an air of lewdness and lust. This kind of blatant gaze was amplified infinitely in the apocalypse, as there were no longer any legal constraints at this point.
“Miss, you can stay at this protective station from now on. With me protecting you, it’s much better than that so-called Shelter No. 3.”
“If you go to those large safe havens, you’ll have no one to rely on. How could that be as safe as staying in your hometown? Besides, as long as you follow me, you can stay in an assigned room instead of squeezing into a large communal bunk with others.”
Tang Yun shot him a cold glance. “Mr. Fan, please show some self-respect.”
Fan Zhuo’s face flushed with anger. Just then, Lu Chuan walked over and positioned himself between Fan Zhuo and Tang Yun.
Lu Chuan’s gaze was icy, and his tall stature exuded an intimidating presence that put pressure on Fan Zhuo.
Reluctant to cause a scene in front of his teammates, Fan Zhuo snorted a few times before walking away.
The rescue team brought the survivors back to the school’s protective station, and the school’s personnel department began arranging accommodations for those they had rescued.
Before entering the protective station, half of the supplies they had brought had to be handed over. Moreover, everyone entering the protective station was required to work.
Farming, patrolling, or being sent out to search for survivors and supplies—this was the current operational method of the protective station.
Unlike the other survivors, Tang Yun and Lu Chuan did not stay in the large communal bunk. Instead, they found an empty classroom to settle in.
The others had no blankets, not even thicker clothing, and could only squeeze into the large communal bunk where dozens of people lay together.
To avoid drawing attention to their wealth, Tang Yun and Lu Chuan only ate some compressed biscuits with bottled water.
“This protective station is a bit strange,” Tang Yun whispered. “The students farming are too numb. I didn’t even see fear in their eyes.”
“It’s only the fifth day of the apocalypse. It’s impossible for there to be no fear.”
Lu Chuan turned to one side to change the dressing on his leg. The wound had become slightly infected, but there were no antibiotics left in the medical kit.
After simply bandaging the wound, he turned and tugged lightly on Tang Yun’s sleeve. “I’m going to the protective station’s exchange area to get some medicine. While I’m gone, be careful and stay safe.”
Tang Yun glanced at his long legs, took supplies from her space, stuffed them into a backpack, and handed it to Lu Chuan. “Alright, you be careful too.”
Not long after Lu Chuan left, there came a knock at the door.
Tang Yun stood behind the door and listened carefully. It wasn’t Lu Chuan—if it were him, he would have spoken up already.
