Arc 1: The Unnatural Predator

The first thing Daniel noticed was the smell.

And something else.

Something familiar.

It reminded him of the smell that lingered in a hospital room after someone had been dead for too long. Sweet, metallic, and sickeningly wrong.

The second thing he noticed was that the creature standing in front of them had a human face.

That was considerably worse.

It stood almost three meters tall, its pale skin stretched tightly over an unnaturally thin frame. Its arms hung nearly to its knees, and its fingers ended in blackened nails that scraped against the stone floor.

Its head tilted to one side.

A smile slowly spread across its face.

"Daniel Cross."

Daniel took a step backward.

"Nope."

The boy beside him glanced at Daniel.

"What do you mean, nope?"

"I mean absolutely not. Whatever this is, I'm not interested."

The creature's smile widened.

"You've grown."

Daniel stared at it.

"Have we met?"

The creature opened its mouth.

A wet clicking sound emerged from its throat.

Then it laughed.

Not loudly. Not hysterically.

It laughed like someone remembering a private joke.

"You really don't remember?"

Daniel's heartbeat hammered against his ribs.

"No. And I'd appreciate it if you stopped saying my full name like we're old friends."

The creature took one step forward.

The stone beneath its foot cracked.

Daniel immediately regretted every decision that had led him into this underground nightmare.

The boy grabbed his sleeve.

"We need to run."

For once, Daniel wholeheartedly agreed.

They turned.

The creature moved.

Daniel barely saw it happen.

One moment, it stood beside the broken door. The next, its elongated arm shot across the chamber and caught the boy around the waist.

The boy screamed.

His knife clattered to the floor.

"HEY!"

Daniel lunged forward and grabbed the boy's wrist.

For one absurd second, all three of them were connected.

Daniel pulled.

The creature pulled harder.

Something popped in Daniel's shoulder.

Pain exploded down his arm.

"LET HIM GO!"

The creature turned its head toward Daniel.

Its expression changed.

The amusement disappeared.

What replaced it was something that looked disturbingly like recognition.

"There you are," it whispered.

Then it flung the boy across the chamber.

He struck a wooden crate and collapsed in a shower of splinters.

Daniel froze.

The boy didn't move.

Something inside Daniel went cold.

He had known the kid for less than ten minutes.

He didn't even know his name.

But the sight of him lying motionless on the floor made Daniel's stomach twist with a rage that felt far too intense for such a short acquaintance.

The creature noticed.

"Oh," it murmured. "That's interesting."

Daniel slowly turned toward it.

"You're going to regret that."

The words came out quieter than he intended.

The creature grinned.

"Yes."

It lunged.

Daniel barely had time to raise his arms before a clawed hand slammed into his chest.

He flew backward.

His body struck the wall hard enough to drive the air from his lungs. Pain spread across his ribs, and for several seconds, he could do nothing except gasp.

The creature approached leisurely.

Its long fingers dragged across the stone.

"You smell different," it said.

Daniel struggled to stand.

"That's probably the blood."

"No."

The creature leaned closer.

"You smell like him."

Daniel's blood ran cold.

"Who?"

The creature's smile returned.

"The one who made you."

Before Daniel could respond, the system appeared.

[EMERGENCY COMBAT PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.]

[Threat Classification: Unknown.]

[Estimated Physical Strength: Superior to Current Host.]

[Recommended Action: Escape.]

Daniel stared at the notification.

"Escape? Brilliant idea. Why didn't I think of that?"

The creature suddenly accelerated.

Daniel threw himself sideways.

Its claws tore through the wall where his head had been a moment earlier.

Stone fragments struck his cheek.

He scrambled toward the opposite side of the chamber, searching desperately for anything that could serve as a weapon.

A broken wooden plank.

A rusted chain.

An overturned lantern.

Wonderful.

He was about to fight a nightmare with the contents of a condemned basement.

The creature pulled its claws free.

Daniel snatched up the chain.

"Come on, then."

The monster tilted its head.

Daniel swallowed.

"Preferably from a distance."

It charged.

Daniel swung the chain.

The metal struck the creature across the face with a sharp crack.

For one beautiful moment, Daniel felt hope.

Then the creature slowly turned its head back toward him.

A thin line of dark fluid trickled from its cheek.

It smiled.

Daniel lowered the chain.

"Right. So that didn't work."

The creature struck him across the face.

The world spun.

Daniel crashed to the floor, his ears ringing.

His vision blurred.

He could hear the creature approaching, but his body refused to respond quickly enough.

Then something changed.

A strange sensation spread through his chest.

Heat.

Not the ordinary warmth of exertion.

This was deeper, as though something beneath his skin had awakened and begun searching for a way out.

The system flickered.

[HOST BIOLOGICAL STRESS LEVEL: CRITICAL.]

[Emergency transformation available.]

Daniel coughed blood onto the floor.

"Do it."

[Warning: Current condition may compromise transformation stability.]

"DO IT!"

For the first time since the system had appeared, it responded without delay.

[Emergency Transformation Initiated.]

Pain swallowed him.

His spine arched.

His muscles contracted violently, and a surge of heat erupted from his body. Steam flooded the chamber as his human form began to disappear beneath a rapidly forming mass of flesh and bone.

The creature stepped backward.

Its smile vanished.

Daniel's scream transformed into a roar.

The chamber shook.

Stone cracked beneath enormous feet.

Within seconds, a fifteen-meter Titan stood where Daniel had been.

Its body was leaner than he remembered, its proportions unnaturally balanced. Thick cords of muscle wrapped around its limbs, while steam rolled from its shoulders and back.

Its eyes opened.

For a moment, Daniel could see nothing but red.

Then the world sharpened.

He could hear water moving through cracks in the walls.

He could smell the injured boy's blood.

He could even hear the creature's heart beating.

Slow.

Steady.

Almost human.

Daniel looked down at his hands.

Massive fingers flexed at his command.

He had done it.

He had transformed again.

And this time, he was conscious enough to understand what he was looking at.

"Oh," he thought.

The thought sounded distant, distorted by the Titan's enormous body.

"Oh, this is going to be a problem."

The creature stared up at him.

Then it began to laugh.

"Magnificent."

Daniel's Titan lowered its head.

The creature spread its arms.

"Show me what you've become."

Daniel roared and charged.

The impact shook the entire chamber.

His fist struck the creature squarely in the chest, sending it crashing through the remnants of the iron door and into the corridor beyond.

Daniel followed, tearing through the stone entrance.

The tunnel was too narrow for his full height, forcing him to crouch as he advanced.

The creature rose from the rubble.

Its chest was already healing.

Flesh twisted.

Bone shifted.

The gaping wound began closing before Daniel's eyes.

He stared.

You have got to be kidding me.

The creature flexed its fingers.

"Your body is stronger than I expected."

Daniel charged again.

This time, the creature slipped beneath his fist and drove both hands into his abdomen.

Pain ripped through his Titan body.

Daniel stumbled backward.

The creature seized his arm and twisted.

Something snapped.

A deep, grinding sound echoed through the tunnel.

Daniel roared.

The creature leaned close to his face.

"Still fighting like an animal."

Daniel swung his free hand.

The creature ducked.

Its claws raked across Daniel's neck.

Hot blood sprayed against the walls.

The Titan staggered.

Daniel could feel the damage translating into a strange, distant agony that seemed to originate from somewhere behind his eyes.

The system flashed.

[WARNING: STRUCTURAL DAMAGE DETECTED.]

[Transformation Stability: 41%.]

[Current Evolution Points: 0.]

[Available Traits: Enhanced Olfactory Perception.]

Daniel's thoughts raced.

He had no claws.

No armor.

No specialized offensive abilities.

His opponent was faster, more experienced, and capable of regenerating from injuries that should have killed it.

In other words, he was screwed.

The creature lunged toward his throat.

Daniel twisted at the last moment.

Its teeth sank into his shoulder instead.

A horrible pressure tore through his Titan flesh.

Daniel screamed and slammed the creature against the tunnel wall.

Once.

Twice.

The third impact shattered part of the stonework.

The creature released him.

Daniel stumbled backward, breathing heavily.

Steam poured from the wounds across his body.

The creature's jaw hung at an unnatural angle.

It pushed the broken bones back into place with its fingers.

Then it laughed again.

"Yes. That's it."

Daniel's rage began giving way to something colder.

Fear.

Not the ordinary fear of being injured or killed.

The fear of realizing that the thing standing in front of him knew far more about his existence than he did.

The creature had recognized his name.

It had mentioned someone who made him.

And it seemed almost pleased by his transformation.

Daniel had spent his entire life believing that monsters belonged in stories.

Now he was one.

And something else had apparently been waiting for him.

The creature raised its hands.

Black veins spread beneath its pale skin.

Daniel's enhanced senses screamed a warning.

Something was wrong.

The air pressure changed.

The creature's body began to tremble.

Then its flesh split open.

Not from an injury.

From within.

Long, black tendrils burst through its back, writhing like the legs of some enormous insect. They struck the walls and ceiling, anchoring themselves in the stone.

Daniel recoiled.

The creature's mouth stretched wider than a human jaw should allow.

"Let's see what the system has given you."

The tendrils snapped toward him.

Daniel tried to dodge.

One wrapped around his ankle.

Another caught his injured arm.

A third coiled around his neck.

The creature pulled.

Daniel crashed onto his back.

The impact sent cracks racing through the tunnel floor.

He struggled, but the tendrils tightened with terrifying strength.

The creature walked toward him.

"You don't understand," it said. "You were never supposed to awaken here."

Daniel clawed at the tendril around his neck.

His vision began to darken.

The system flashed frantically.

[WARNING: FOREIGN BIOLOGICAL MATERIAL DETECTED.]

[Attempting Analysis...]

[Analysis Failed.]

[WARNING: FOREIGN MATERIAL IS INTERFERING WITH SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.]

Daniel's Titan fingers trembled.

The creature knelt beside his head.

"You have no idea how long we've waited."

Daniel forced himself to look at it.

"Who... are you?"

For the first time, the creature's expression became serious.

It leaned close enough for Daniel to see tiny humanlike movements beneath its translucent skin.

Then it whispered:

"We are what remains of the first mistake."

Daniel's heart hammered.

The first mistake?

Before he could ask another question, the tendrils tightened.

Something inside his Titan body began to give way.

His vision went black around the edges.

The system produced one final notification.

[CRITICAL EVENT: UNAUTHORIZED EVOLUTION DETECTED.]

[A new trait is attempting to manifest.]

[Warning: This trait does not originate from an identified biological source.]

Daniel stared at the words.

A new trait?

He hadn't consumed anything.

He hadn't even earned a single evolution point.

Then why—

The creature suddenly recoiled.

Its eyes widened.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared on its face.

"No," it whispered.

The black tendrils began to shrivel.

The creature stumbled backward, clutching its chest.

"No. No, no, no. Not you."

Daniel felt something move beneath his skin.

Something vast.

Something hungry.

The system's interface shattered into flickering fragments of light.

Then a new message appeared.

[HIDDEN TRAIT AWAKENED.]

[TRAIT: PREDATORY ADAPTATION.]

[Effect: The host may develop temporary biological countermeasures against immediate threats under extreme survival conditions.]

[Warning: Adaptation is involuntary, unpredictable, and potentially damaging to the host.]

Daniel's Titan body convulsed.

The tendrils around his limbs disintegrated into black smoke.

His damaged shoulder twisted violently.

Bone shifted beneath the flesh.

His fingers elongated, and dark, jagged structures began forming along his forearms.

The pain was unbearable.

But Daniel was alive.

And for the first time since entering this world, he felt something other than helplessness.

He felt a chance.

The creature backed away.

"What are you?"

Daniel slowly rose to his feet.

Steam rolled from his shoulders.

His newly formed forearm structures glistened in the dim light.

He didn't know what the trait would do once the immediate danger passed.

He didn't know why it had awakened.

He didn't even know whether his body would survive the process.

But he knew one thing.

The creature was afraid of him now.

Daniel's Titan lips pulled into a grim smile.

"Honestly?"

He took a step forward.

"I'm still figuring that out."

Then he charged.

The creature screamed.

And somewhere deep beneath the ruins, something answered.

A second scream.

Then a third.

The entire underground structure began to shake.

Daniel stopped mid-charge.

The creature stared past him toward the darkness.

Its expression collapsed into absolute terror.

"They're waking up," it whispered.

Daniel turned slowly.

From the depths of the tunnel came the sound of chains breaking.

One after another.

Then the system appeared again.

[EMERGENCY QUEST UPDATED.]

[Objective: Survive the containment breach.]

[New Threats Detected: 12.]

[Recommended Action: FLEE IMMEDIATELY.]

Daniel looked at the twelve new threat indicators.

Then at the creature that had nearly killed him.

Then at the tunnel stretching into the darkness behind them.

He had two broken arms, a damaged Titan body, no evolution points, and absolutely no idea what was happening.

He had never wanted to go home so badly in his entire life.

"Right," Daniel muttered.

"Next time I wake up in a strange world, I'm checking for a return policy."

The first set of glowing eyes appeared in the darkness.

Then another.

And another.

The creature beside him began to scream.

Daniel realized, with a sinking feeling in his stomach, that the monster he'd been fighting might have been the least dangerous thing in this entire place.
