“Thank you.”
Su Wanyin looked at the ordinary-looking, thin old lady in front of her and only felt that she was comforting her. Still, a warm feeling quietly rose in her heart.
At that moment, several train attendants suddenly walked through the carriage holding a large gift box. Under everyone’s shocked gaze, they stopped in front of Su Wanyin and announced loudly:
“Comrade, thank you for helping us catch the thief, for helping everyone recover their stolen belongings, and for bravely using your medical skills to save the elderly!”
After speaking, they raised their hands and applauded in unison.
A few seconds later, the passengers in the carriage reacted and followed with loud applause.
Su Wanyin was stunned by the thunderous clapping. With the old lady’s reminder, she slowly accepted the gift box the attendants had been holding out, calm and composed.
“No need to thank me. I was just doing what I should.”
The conductor happened to enter this carriage and heard her calm reply. He looked at her with admiration and turned to instruct his subordinates:
“Good! Even such a young girl already has this level of awareness. You all should learn from her!”
“Yes!”
After praising her a few more times, the conductor left with his team.
After they left, the passengers in the carriage felt somewhat ashamed and looked at Su Wanyin with guilt—especially those who had previously been afraid to help.
A few of them discussed and eventually took out grain coupons or food as they walked toward her.
“Little girl, we’re really sorry. This is a small token of appreciation.”
Su Wanyin glanced at them and shook her head lightly. “No need.”
Then she said calmly:
“It’s not wrong to protect your own safety. But if everyone thinks like this, then when it’s your turn to be in trouble and everyone just watches, how would you feel?”
The elderly passengers were instantly embarrassed and flushed with shame.
In the end, they still forced the grain coupons into her hands and quickly returned to their seats.
“They’re thanking you, just take it,” the old lady said kindly. “Without you, they might have suffered for a long time.”
In truth, it wasn’t just suffering—it could have meant disaster.
Su Wanyin understood this too. After looking at the small stack of grain coupons, she accepted them.
After all, she really did need money now, and she was no longer the wealthy philanthropist she had once been.
……
On the other side, Huo Wei watched the entire turn of events in shock.
“Commander, she’s amazing…”
She could treat patients, think quickly, and also be kind-hearted.
Fu Shimò glanced at his subordinate’s admiring expression, then looked at the girl in front row who was chatting with the old lady, her lips curved like a crescent moon. His dark eyes flickered with a deep, unreadable light.
“Do you really think an ordinary rural girl could do all this?” he said coldly.
Huo Wei immediately tensed up and swallowed his praise. Doubt crept into his heart as well.
……
That night, the train arrived at the station. Su Wanyin helped the old lady off the train.
After exchanging addresses, they parted ways.
A black car was already waiting. Fu Shimò handed the luggage to Huo Wei and gave him a few quiet instructions before turning and leaving.
Huo Wei hesitated, wanting to speak but not daring to.
“Is something wrong?” Su Wanyin asked from the car.
“Nothing,” Huo Wei said quickly.
After loading the luggage, he still didn’t get in.
“Comrade Su, please go to the Fu residence first. We have a mission and I need to leave.”
“Alright,” Su Wanyin nodded.
Huo Wei left almost as if fleeing.
Su Wanyin watched his hurried figure and frowned slightly.
Something felt off.
……
When she arrived at the mansion, she was slightly surprised.
The Fu family’s residence was far more wealthy and imposing than she had imagined.
She walked up the stone path and knocked on the iron gate.
A middle-aged maid looked at her and said impatiently:
“The master is not home. Come back another day.”
Su Wanyin calmly replied:
“Hello, I am Su Wanyin, Fu Shimò’s fiancée. Please inform them.”
The maid’s expression changed immediately.
After a short while, she came back and opened the door.
Inside the living room, a well-dressed middle-aged woman and a young girl were seated.
The girl looked at her with obvious disgust.
Su Wanyin greeted them politely and calmly, showing no sign of embarrassment.
The young girl suddenly stood up and shouted:
“I don’t acknowledge some village girl as my sister!”
Then she stormed upstairs.
The woman sighed and smiled apologetically:
“My daughter is spoiled. Please don’t mind her.”
Su Wanyin smiled faintly.
“I won’t.”
She raised her eyes—and met the girl upstairs deliberately making a mocking face at her.
