5 - The Ancient Stag King

Beast Sovereign - A New Journey Begins (Volume 2)

The Whispering Spirit Forest grew unnaturally still.

Not a leaf stirred.

Not a bird sang.

Even the wind seemed to wait.

Lyra stood protectively before the rescued boy while Umbra faced the darkness between the towering trees.

Two crimson eyes watched them.

Ancient.

Calm.

Patient.

The Codex slowly opened.

A deep voice echoed through the forest.

"You purified my children..."

"...instead of killing them."

A colossal figure stepped into the moonlight.

It was a magnificent white stag nearly four metres tall.

Its antlers resembled branches of crystal, covered in glowing blue flowers.

Golden vines wrapped around its legs, and every step caused new grass to bloom beneath its hooves.

The forest itself seemed to breathe with him.

The Codex flickered once more.

The rescued boy gasped.

"The Spirit King..."

He immediately knelt.

Lyra bowed respectfully.

"It is an honour to meet you."

Sylvan lowered his enormous head until his eyes met hers.

"I have watched countless hunters enter this forest."

"They sought trophies."

"They sought power."

"You sought only to save."

He turned his gaze toward the three Night Stalkers, now peacefully resting.

"They will remember your kindness."

Pyron stepped forward and inclined his head.

"It has been many years, old friend."

Sylvan smiled.

"And yet your flames still burn as brightly."

The two ancient beings greeted one another like companions reunited after a long journey.

Sylvan looked back at Lyra.

"The Codex has chosen well."

"But compassion without wisdom is dangerous."

He gently stamped one hoof.

The ground shimmered.

The entire clearing vanished.

Lyra suddenly found herself standing in another part of the forest.

No Pyron.

No Umbra.

No Codex.

Only silence.

A frightened rabbit hid beneath a bush.

From the opposite side emerged a starving wolf.

The wolf was painfully thin.

Its ribs were clearly visible.

The rabbit trembled.

Both creatures looked at Lyra.

Waiting.

A familiar golden screen appeared.

Trial of Wisdom

Only one life can be saved.

Choose.

Lyra's heart sank.

"This isn't fair."

The rabbit deserved to live.

The wolf deserved to eat.

Neither had done anything wrong.

She refused to answer.

"There has to be another way."

The forest remained silent.

Minutes passed.

Then Lyra noticed something.

Nearby grew a bush covered with bright red berries.

She remembered the old man's lessons.

"These berries..."

"They're poisonous."

She quickly gathered them and threw them away.

Behind the bush grew edible mountain fruit hidden beneath the leaves.

Lyra picked every fruit she could find and rolled them toward the starving wolf.

The wolf hesitated before eating.

Its hunger eased.

Then Lyra carefully lifted the rabbit and released it into a hollow tree.

Safe.

The golden screen dissolved.

The forest returned to normal.

Umbra ran to her side immediately.

The Codex glowed brightly.

Sylvan smiled warmly.

"Many believe wisdom is choosing between two answers."

"The greatest wisdom..."

"...is discovering the third."

He lowered one of his crystal antlers.

A tiny emerald leaf drifted into Lyra's hand.

It shimmered with ancient energy.

The Codex recognised it instantly.

Pyron nodded with satisfaction.

"Only one Guardian has acknowledged you so far."

Sylvan looked toward the distant horizon.

"Soon..."

"The others will begin their own trials."

His expression suddenly grew serious.

"The Void is moving again."

"It is searching."

Lyra tightened her grip on the emerald leaf.

"Searching for what?"

Sylvan gazed at her with solemn eyes.

"No..."

"It is searching for whom."

Far beyond the Whispering Spirit Forest, hidden beneath an abandoned mountain temple, a black crystal cracked open from within.

A voice whispered into the darkness.

"I have found the next Beast Sovereign."

Two crimson eyes slowly opened.
