8 - The Valley of Echoes

Beast Sovereign - A New Journey Begins (Volume 2)

The ancient road wound through towering mountains.

For two days, Lyra, Umbra, and Pyron travelled without incident.

The further they journeyed from the Whispering Spirit Forest, the quieter the world became.

Even the birds no longer sang.

The Codex slowly opened.

Destination Ahead

Valley of Echoes

Guardian Blessing:

Verified

Estimated Threat:

Unknown

Warning:

The valley reflects not your appearance...

...but your heart.

Lyra glanced at Pyron.

"What does that mean?"

The Guardian of Flame smiled faintly.

"It means no one can lie there."

"Not even to themselves."

By sunset, they reached the entrance.

Two colossal stone statues stood on either side of the canyon.

One depicted a wolf.

The other, a dragon.

Both bowed toward the valley as if greeting an honoured guest.

As Lyra stepped between them, the emerald blessing left by Sylvan glowed softly on her forehead.

The stone gates rumbled open.

Mist rolled through the valley floor.

Strange voices drifted on the wind.

Some laughed.

Some cried.

Some whispered names long forgotten.

Umbra walked close beside Lyra.

Through Shared Instinct, she felt his unease.

Suddenly...

The mist thickened.

Pyron disappeared.

Umbra vanished.

Lyra found herself standing alone.

A familiar cottage stood before her.

The same cottage where the elderly man had lived.

Smoke rose peacefully from its chimney.

For a moment...

She forgot she was in the valley.

The old man stepped outside.

He smiled warmly.

"You're home."

Lyra's heart ached.

"I..."

"I've missed this place."

He opened the door.

"You don't have to keep travelling."

"The world already has heroes."

"You've done enough."

Lyra hesitated.

It was tempting.

No danger.

No battles.

No responsibility.

Just peace.

She took one step toward the cottage.

Then...

She noticed something.

There were no animal tracks around the house.

No birds perched on the roof.

No breeze carried the scent of pine.

It was perfect.

Too perfect.

She closed her eyes.

"The real home I left behind..."

"...was never this quiet."

She reached into her pocket and took out the small wooden wolf carving the rescued boy had given her.

"This reminds me why I left."

The cottage cracked like fragile glass.

The illusion shattered.

The Codex glowed brightly.

Trial of Resolve

Status:

Passed

Elsewhere in the valley...

Umbra faced his own trial.

Before him stood a pack of wolves.

They growled at Lyra.

A voice whispered,

"Leave the human."

"Return to your own kind."

"You belong with us."

Umbra looked toward the wolves.

Then toward the distant sound of Lyra's whistle.

Without hesitation...

He turned his back on the illusion.

The phantom pack dissolved into silver mist.

The golden thread connecting Lyra and Umbra blazed brighter than ever.

Synchronization rose without the Codex even announcing it.

At the heart of the valley, Pyron waited beside a crystal lake.

He smiled as Lyra and Umbra emerged from the mist together.

"I knew you'd make it."

Lyra looked around.

"Were those... memories?"

Pyron shook his head.

"No."

"They were your deepest wishes."

"The Valley of Echoes doesn't test your strength."

"It asks what you're willing to abandon."

Suddenly, the crystal lake rippled.

A figure rose from its surface.

She wore robes woven from flowing water.

Long silver-blue hair drifted like a river in the wind.

Her eyes shone with the calm light of the moon.

Every drop of water in the valley gathered around her.

Umbra lowered his head instinctively.

Pyron smiled.

"Our next Guardian has arrived."

The Codex shimmered.

Legendary Presence Detected

Nereus

Title:

Guardian of Tides

Status:

Observing

Nereus looked at Lyra for a long moment before speaking.

"The forest accepted your kindness."

"The valley accepted your resolve."

She raised one graceful hand.

"But water..."

"...reveals the truth hidden beneath both."

The surface of the crystal lake began to glow.

From its depths, a massive shadow slowly rose.

Not corrupted.

Not hostile.

Ancient.

A serpent of pure water, larger than an entire castle, opened its luminous eyes.

Nereus smiled gently.

"Welcome, Lyra."

"Your second Guardian Trial begins now."
