The deeper claim changed the air in small ways.

The pack noticed first.

When Mara stopped by three days later, her nostrils flared, and her eyebrows rose.Full novel: Before the Full Moon Rises — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

She said nothing, but the look she gave Derek carried reluctant respect.

Cal and Rian started treating Allison with a casual protectiveness that had not been there before.

Elias simply nodded once when he caught the scent and continued his report on boundary markers as if nothing had shifted.

Allison felt it most clearly at night.

The bond did not allow her to read Derek’s thoughts, but it made his presence a constant low awareness at the edge of her mind: direction, distance, the rough shape of his mood.

When he left for the shop, she could sense the moment he crossed out of easy range.

When he returned, the awareness settled again like a hand at the small of her back.

One evening in the fourth week, Derek found her at the kitchen table surrounded by the old newspaper clippings she had copied from the library.

“You’re digging again,” he said, not accusing.

“I’m trying to understand the cycles.

How many times the Wraith has risen.

How the pack survived each one.” She tapped a yellowed article from 1978.

‘Hale’ isn’t only you.

There was another.”

Derek’s expression closed for a moment, then opened again with visible effort.

He pulled out the chair opposite her and sat.

“My father,” he said.

“Alpha before me.

The 1994 cycle was his last.

The Wraith took him the night the moon peaked.

I was twenty-three.

I finished the fight he started, and the pack named me alpha before the blood was dry.”

Allison reached across the table and covered his hand.

“There wasn’t a reason to until now.” He turned his palm up so their fingers could lace.

“He made the same choice I did: kept a human close during a rising cycle.

She didn’t survive.

I spent a long time believing that was the inevitable cost.

You proved me wrong.”

The quiet that followed was heavy but not painful.

Allison squeezed his hand.

“I’m still here,” she said.

“I know.” Derek’s thumb brushed the inside of her wrist, right over the pulse.

“That’s why I’m telling you.

The past doesn’t get to decide the future.

Not anymore.”

They burned the oldest clippings in the fireplace that night not to erase history, but to release the weight of it.

The smoke rose clean and disappeared into the dark.
