By the sixth week, the first real snow had dusted the higher ridges.

Allison stood on the porch with a mug of coffee and watched Derek move through the trees below the cabin, checking the new boundary markers the pack had placed after the Wraith’s defeat.

The deeper claim hummed quietly under her skin, a steady awareness of his location and the calm focus he carried while he worked.Full novel: Before the Full Moon Rises — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He looked up as if he had felt her attention and lifted a hand.

She returned the gesture.

Later, inside, they spread a fresh map on the table and redrew the territory lines with the knowledge that the old treaty needed updating.

The Wraith’s cycle had exposed weaknesses: places where the pack’s attention had thinned, trails that humans now used more frequently, gaps that could not be allowed to remain.

“We’ll need to meet with the neighboring territories in the spring,” Derek said, marking a ridge in pencil.

“Quiet conversations.

No formal summons.

Just enough to make sure everyone understands the cycle is longer than any of us like to admit.”

Allison leaned against his shoulder, studying the map.

“And the town?”

That’s the part of the treaty that still works.” He glanced at her.

“Your part is harder.

You’ve given up the story you came for.

What do you want instead?”

She considered the question the way she had been considering it for weeks.

“I want to keep writing.

Not the truth that would destroy the treaty something else.

Fiction, maybe.

Or local history that stops short of the things that have teeth.

And I want to stay.

Here.

With you.

For as long as it remains the right place.”

Derek set the pencil down and turned to face her fully.

The gold was absent; only the man looked back.

“Then we make it the right place,” he said.

“Every day.”

That night the snow fell harder, blanketing the clearing in soft white silence.

They built the fire high and left the curtains open so the new snow reflected the firelight into the room.

Derek took her apart slowly on the rug in front of the hearth, the deeper mark on her throat pressed to his mouth while he moved inside her, the claim singing between them with every thrust.

When she came, it was with his name on her lips and the certain knowledge that the boundary they had drawn was no longer only lines on a map.

It was the life they were choosing, one quiet night at a time.

Outside, the woods slept under fresh snow.

No unnatural howls rose.

No cold spots gathered in the hollows.

Only the ordinary dark, and the two of them inside it, still awake, still choosing each other.
