The image of Elara looking directly at me while kissing my husband.

None of it belonged on a professional set.

Not when hundreds of people depended on us to keep the day moving.

I took a slow breath, straightened the stack of script pages in my hands, and walked toward Timothy.

He’d just finished toweling the fake rain from his hair, though a few damp strands still clung stubbornly to his forehead.

His costume department had already begun fussing over his jacket, brushing away imaginary lint while the makeup artist prepared to reset the glycerin for the next scene.

The moment he noticed me approaching, he dismissed everyone around him with a quiet nod.

Our eyes met.

For a heartbeat…

It was just us.

Not the country’s most famous actor.

Not one of the industry’s busiest talent managers.

Just a husband…

Looking at his wife.

I forced my lips into a small professional smile.

“Honey,” I said, surprised by how steady my own voice sounded.

“This is the next scene.” I held out the fresh script pages.

“Hope you’re ready.” The words were ordinary.

Routine.

The kind I’d spoken hundreds of times throughout his career.

Yet somehow…

They felt painfully unfamiliar.

Timothy accepted the pages carefully.

His fingers brushed mine for only the briefest second.

Warm.

Gentle.

Almost hesitant.

Normally, he would’ve squeezed my hand.

Maybe stolen a playful smile.

Whispered something cheesy enough to make me roll my eyes.

Today…

He merely held my fingertips for a fraction longer than necessary before letting go.

I didn’t pull away.

But I couldn’t bring myself to reach for him either.

The tiny distance between us suddenly felt impossibly large.

His jaw tightened.

I knew that expression.

He’d noticed.

Of course he had.

He always noticed.

Around us, the film set continued as though nothing had happened.

Electricians adjusted overhead lights.

Production assistants hurried between departments carrying clipboards.

Someone yelled for wardrobe.

The director discussed camera angles with the cinematographer.

Life moved forward.

But for Timothy…

His attention never left me.

I could almost see him studying every detail.

The way I held the clipboard a little tighter than usual.

The faint crease forming between my eyebrows.

The smile that didn’t quite reach my eyes.

I hated that he knew me so well.

Because it meant he knew exactly how much I was hurting.

“Thanks,” he said quietly.

The word was so soft I nearly missed it.

Not the playful “Thanks, sweetheart.” Not the teasing “You’re saving my life again.” Just…

“Thanks.” Then, as though remembering where we were, he lifted his voice enough for everyone nearby to hear.

“I’m ready.” Professional.

Reliable.

Exactly what everyone expected from Timothy Zion.

Across the set, I caught Elara watching us.

She leaned comfortably against one of the scenery walls while makeup touched up her lipstick.

There it was again.

That smug little smile.

She thought she’d won something.

Poor woman.

She didn’t understand our marriage at all.

She saw one kiss.

She didn’t see the years behind it.

The nights spent memorizing scripts together.

The countless flights.

The award ceremonies.

The failed auditions before success ever came.

The quiet mornings drinking coffee before sunrise.

She could imitate intimacy.

She couldn’t replace history.

The assistant director called for everyone to prepare.

The crew immediately shifted into motion.

I glanced toward the refreshments table before looking back at Timothy.

“Hey…” He looked at me immediately.

“Do you need anything to drink before the next scene?” For a moment…

He simply stared.

As though I’d asked him something impossible.

His eyes softened with an emotion I couldn’t quite describe.

Regret.

Love.

Maybe both.

I realized what I’d sounded like.

Not like a wife.

Like a manager checking on her client.

Professional.

Polite.

Carefully distant.

His expression faltered almost imperceptibly.

If anyone else had been watching, they would’ve missed it.

I didn’t.

He looked…

Heartbroken.

As though he’d rather I’d shouted at him.

As though my calm hurt far more than anger ever could.

A long second passed.

“Yeah,” he answered quietly.

“So…

water would be great.” His voice carried just enough for nearby crew members to hear.

One of the production assistants immediately nodded.

“I’ll grab one.” She hurried toward craft services.

Before she’d taken more than two steps, Timothy moved.

Only one small step.

Barely enough for anyone else to notice.

But enough to bring him just a little closer to me.

Close enough that his next words belonged only to us.

“…And maybe…” His voice had dropped to a whisper.

“…see me after this take?” I looked up.

Really looked at him.

The confident actor everyone admired had vanished.

Standing in front of me was simply my husband.

There was no arrogance.

No expectation.

No attempt to defend himself.

Only quiet hope.

His eyes searched mine with an honesty that almost made my carefully built composure crumble.

He wasn’t asking because he thought he’d done something wrong.

He was asking because he knew I’d been hurt.

Because even though neither of us could change what the script demanded…

He still wanted to make sure I wasn’t facing those feelings alone.

His expression silently pleaded with me.

Please don’t shut me out.

Please let me explain.

Please let me hold you when this is over.

My throat tightened.

Part of me wanted to throw my arms around him right there in front of everyone.

To remind the entire set—including one particularly overconfident actress—that this man came home with me every single night.

Instead…

I drew in a slow breath and gave him the smallest nod.

“After the take,” I murmured.

My voice was barely audible.

“We’ll talk.” The relief that flashed across Timothy’s face lasted less than a second before he masked it beneath the calm professionalism everyone expected.

But I saw it.

I always would.

Because no matter how convincing he was in front of a camera…

No performance could ever fool the woman who had fallen in love with the man behind it.
