The day had finally come to an end.
A chorus of voices echoed across the soundstage as the assistant director called the final wrap.
“That’s a wrap for today!” Applause broke out among parts of the crew.
Someone cheered.
Another groaned dramatically about tomorrow’s call time.
The massive studio that had buzzed with relentless energy since sunrise slowly transformed into organized chaos.
Light stands were lowered.
Cameras disappeared into padded cases.
Set decorators carefully removed props while wardrobe assistants hurried costumes toward the trailers before anything could go missing.
The harsh white filming lights dimmed one by one.
In their place, the evening sun poured through the open studio doors.
Everything was bathed in warm golden light.
For a brief moment…
The set almost looked peaceful.
I quietly gathered my belongings.
My tablet slid neatly into my shoulder bag.
The day’s shooting schedule disappeared into my leather portfolio.
Pens.
Sticky notes.
Headset.
Chargers.
Everything had its place.
Keeping things organized had always helped clear my mind.
Today…
Not even perfect organization could untangle the knot in my chest.
Almost without thinking, my eyes wandered across the studio.
Timothy stood near the director, still dressed in costume except for the loosened tie hanging around his neck.
The two of them appeared to be discussing tomorrow’s shooting schedule.
The director was gesturing enthusiastically.
Timothy listened attentively, nodding every so often.
Anyone watching would assume he was completely focused on work.
I knew better.
Even from this distance…
His eyes searched the room every few seconds.
Searching for me.
Every single time.
Our gazes almost met twice before I looked away.
Not because I was angry.
Because I knew if our eyes locked for too long…
I’d probably walk over and hug him right in the middle of the studio.
And that wasn’t exactly ideal with half the entertainment press lurking outside the gates.
“Hey.” A familiar voice pulled me from my thoughts.
Before I could even turn- Strong arms wrapped around me.
“Lena.” I laughed softly, returning the hug.
She squeezed me tighter than usual.
Not painfully.
Protectively.
Like she’d already decided she wasn’t letting me carry today alone.
We’d met during film school.
Back when neither of us had money.
Back when surviving on instant noodles and caffeine counted as dinner.
She’d become one of the industry’s most talented freelance editors.
I’d become a talent manager.
Life had taken us in different directions.
Friendship hadn’t changed at all.
She finally pulled back.
Her platinum-blonde hair was tied into the usual messy bun that somehow always looked intentional.
An oversized denim jacket hung loosely over a black T-shirt, paired with worn combat boots that clicked confidently against the concrete floor.
Classic Lena.
She studied my face for several long seconds.
Long enough to make me self-conscious.
“…You look exhausted.” “I’ve looked worse.” “You have.” She nodded matter-of-factly.
“But usually after seventy-two hours of nonstop editing.” Her expression softened.
“This is different.” I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because she already knew.
Her eyes shifted toward Timothy.
Then farther beyond him…
Toward Elara.
The actress stood laughing with a few crew members as though nothing unusual had happened today.
Lena’s jaw tightened.
“…I watched the monitor.” Of course she had.
Editors watched everything.
She noticed details most people missed.
“I know.” She looked back at me.
“…She crossed the line.” I didn’t answer.
I didn’t need to.
Lena reached over and quietly linked her arm through mine.
Such a tiny gesture.
Yet somehow…
It loosened something inside my chest.
It said everything without words.
I’m here.
You’re not alone.
I saw what happened.
And no, you are not imagining it.
I hadn’t realized how badly I needed someone to acknowledge that until that moment.
She leaned closer.
“So…” Her voice lowered conspiratorially.
“On a scale from one to prison sentence…” I blinked.
“…How much do you want me to accidentally spill coffee on her designer outfit tomorrow morning?” Despite everything…
A laugh escaped me.
A real one.
Small.
But genuine.
Lena grinned triumphantly.
“There she is.” “I am not letting you assault an actress with coffee.” “It wouldn’t be assault.” She sounded deeply offended.
“It would be…
beverage-based karma.” I rolled my eyes.
“You’ve been watching too many legal dramas.” “I edit legal dramas.” “Exactly.” She laughed.
For the first time all day…
So did I.
Across the room, Timothy’s head turned.
His eyes found us almost instantly.
He paused midsentence while the director continued talking.
Even from here…
I saw the relief flicker across his face.
Not because I was laughing with him.
Because I was laughing at all.
Lena noticed.
“Oh.” She followed my gaze.
“He keeps checking on you.” I sighed.
“I know.” “No.” She shook her head.
“I don’t think you do.” I looked back toward Timothy.
He wasn’t even pretending anymore.
Every few moments, his attention drifted away from the conversation and returned to me.
Making sure I was okay.
Making sure I hadn’t left.
Making sure I hadn’t shut him out.
Lena folded her arms.
“You know…” She spoke thoughtfully.
“I’ve met plenty of actors.” “Occupational hazard.” She continued watching Timothy.
“Most would’ve leaned into the attention.” I stayed silent.
“Your idiot looked like he’d rather wrestle a bear than film another romantic scene with that woman.” I couldn’t help smiling.
“My idiot?” She shrugged.
“He married my best friend.” A mischievous grin spread across her face.
“That makes him my idiot too.” I laughed again.
This time a little louder.
Timothy heard it.
His shoulders visibly relaxed before he caught himself and returned his attention to the director.
Lena watched the exchange with folded arms.
“…See that?” “What?” “He breathes easier when you’re smiling.” I looked down, suddenly embarrassed.
“I hate how obvious we are.” “No.” She nudged my shoulder gently.
“I think it’s nice.” For a moment, neither of us spoke.
We simply stood there together while the last rays of sunlight stretched across the emptying soundstage.
Crew members wished one another good night.
Equipment cases rolled toward waiting trucks.
Tomorrow…
We’d all be back here again.
Another early call time.
Another day in front of cameras.
Another day pretending fiction and reality never blurred together.
Lena squeezed my arm one last time.
“Come on.” She smiled warmly.
“Let’s get you home.” My eyes drifted toward Timothy once more.
He was finally finishing his conversation with the director.
And almost as if he could feel me looking…
He looked back.
This time…
Neither of us looked away.
