The following morning, the storm had finally passed.
Golden rays of sunlight streamed through the curtains of the executive suite, filling the room with warmth.
Lily was already awake.
She quietly organized the presentation files, checked her laptop, and reviewed the meeting agenda one last time.
She glanced toward the other side of the room.
Damian was still asleep.
For the first time since she had met him, he looked…
peaceful.
Without the sharp suit and serious expression, he looked less like the feared CEO of Wayne Corporation and more like an ordinary man carrying years of silent burdens.
Lily smiled faintly before turning away.
A few moments later, Damian stirred awake.
He noticed the neatly arranged documents on the table.
“You’ve been working already?”
Lily nodded.
“I wanted everything ready before breakfast.”
He looked at his watch.
“It’s only six-thirty.”
“I couldn’t sleep.”
He smiled slightly.
“You never stop, do you?”
She laughed softly.
“Not when something important is ahead.”
Arrival at the Conference Center
By nine o’clock, Damian and Lily arrived at the Mombasa International Business Centre.
The lobby was filled with executives from different companies across East Africa.
Reporters stood near the entrance taking photographs.
As Damian stepped out of the car, cameras immediately flashed.
“Mr. Wayne!”
“This way!”
“Any comments about the expansion project?”
Damian simply nodded politely and continued walking.
Lily followed closely behind, carrying the presentation case.
Inside the conference hall, representatives from several companies greeted Damian with respect.
“Mr. Wayne, welcome.”
“It’s good to see you again.”
“Thank you.”
One of the organizers smiled at Lily.
“And you must be Miss Carter.”
She nodded politely.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
An Unexpected Problem
Ten minutes before the presentation, Lily opened the presentation case.
Her heart skipped.
The flash drive containing the final presentation was missing.
She searched every pocket.
Every folder.
Nothing.
“No…”
“What is it?”
“The flash drive…”
“It’s gone.”
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Several executives looked in their direction.
“When did you last see it?” Damian asked.
“This morning.”
“I packed it myself.”
She searched again.
“It was here.”
A wave of panic threatened to overwhelm her.
Not again.
Trust
Damian placed a hand lightly on the conference table.
“Lily.”
She looked at him.
“Take a breath.”
She inhaled slowly.
He continued calmly.
“Did you prepare a backup?”
She blinked.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“My laptop.”
He nodded once.
“Then we use the laptop.”
Lily stared at him.
“You’re not angry?”
“I’d be angry if you came unprepared.”
“You didn’t.”
Relief washed over her.
For the first time, she realized something had changed.
A few weeks ago, Damian would have questioned her immediately.
Now…
He trusted her.
She smiled.
“Thank you.”
The Presentation
The conference room filled with investors, business leaders, and journalists.
Damian stood confidently at the front of the room.
“Ladies and gentlemen…”
“Thank you for joining us today.”
Lily managed the slides from her laptop flawlessly.
The presentation highlighted Wayne Corporation’s vision for expansion, job creation, and regional partnerships.
Every transition was smooth.
Every financial projection was clear.
At the end of the presentation, applause filled the room.
One investor stood.
“Excellent presentation.”
Another smiled.
“Wayne Corporation clearly came prepared.”
Damian glanced briefly toward Lily.
She returned a small smile.
Despite everything…
They had succeeded together.
The Dinner Invitation
Soft music played as guests mingled beneath elegant lights.
Lily stood near the balcony, admiring the waves.
“It’s beautiful.”
Damian joined her.
“You’ve never been here before?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“My family never had the chance to travel.”
He looked out at the water.
“My parents used to bring me here.”
His voice was quieter than usual.
“It’s strange.”
“What is?”
“I haven’t thought about those memories in years.”
Lily looked at him.
“Maybe you needed someone to remind you that not every memory has to hurt.”
He turned to her.
Before he could respond…
A familiar voice interrupted.
“There you are.”
Both turned.
Victoria stood a few steps away wearing an elegant black evening gown.
She smiled brightly.
“I thought I’d surprise you.”
Lily’s smile faded.
Damian frowned.
“Victoria.”
“What are you doing here?”
Victoria linked her arm casually through Damian’s.
“I was invited by one of the investors.”
She looked at Lily.
“I hope I’m not interrupting.”
Lily stepped back politely.
“Not at all.”
But inside…
Something tightened in her chest.
She couldn’t explain why.
She told herself it didn’t matter.
Damian was her boss.
Victoria had known him for years.
Yet watching them together stirred an unfamiliar feeling.
One she wasn’t ready to admit.
Across the ballroom, Victoria noticed the brief change in Lily’s expression.
A satisfied smile crossed her face.
“Good,” she thought.
“The first crack has appeared.”
She had come to the dinner for one reason.
To make Lily question her place in Damian’s life.
And judging by the look on Lily’s face…
Her plan had begun to work.
