The days following the media frenzy were anything but peaceful.

Every newspaper seemed to have a different version of the story.

Some claimed Lily was Damian Wayne’s secret girlfriend.Full novel: Beneath His Walls — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Others insisted she was only an ambitious employee trying to climb the corporate ladder.

Lily stopped reading the articles altogether.

She buried herself in work instead.

It was the only place where she still felt in control.

A New Assignment

Wednesday morning began with another packed schedule.

Lily entered Damian’s office carrying several folders.

“Good morning, sir.”

“Morning.”

Damian looked up from his laptop.

“You have a meeting with the board at ten, lunch with the banking committee at one, and the Wayne Foundation Charity Gala tonight.”

Lily placed the final file on his desk.

“I’ve already confirmed everything.”

Damian nodded approvingly.

“There has been one change.”

She looked at him.

“I want you to attend the gala with me.”

Lily blinked.

“As your assistant?”

“Yes.”

“You’ll be coordinating the guest list and helping with the foundation’s presentations.”

She smiled.

“I’d be honored.”

Preparing for the Evening

By late afternoon, the company stylist arrived with several formal outfits for the executive team.

Lily had never worn an evening gown before.

She stared at the elegant dresses in disbelief.

“I don’t think these are for me.”

The stylist laughed.

“They’re exactly for you.”

After much persuasion, Lily chose a simple emerald-green gown.

It was elegant without being flashy.

She kept her makeup natural and wore her hair in soft waves.

When she looked in the mirror, she barely recognized herself.

Damian’s Reaction

That evening, Damian waited in the hotel lobby where the gala guests were gathering.

As the elevator doors opened, Lily stepped out.

The lobby seemed to fall silent.

She walked gracefully toward him.

Damian looked at her for a long moment.

“You look…”

He paused.

Lily smiled nervously.

“Terrible?”

“No.”

A faint smile appeared on his face.

“You look beautiful.”

Lily felt warmth rush to her cheeks.

“Thank you.”

For a second, neither of them spoke.

Then Damian offered his arm.

“Shall we?”

She nodded.

Together, they walked into the grand ballroom.

The Gala

The charity gala was hosted by the Wayne Foundation to raise funds for children’s education and community health programs. Find the original chapter at g.com.

Business leaders, politicians, celebrities, and journalists filled the room.

Damian was greeted everywhere he went.

“Mr. Wayne.”

“It’s an honor.”

Lily stayed close, making sure every detail of the evening ran smoothly.

She greeted guests, coordinated the program, and quietly solved problems before anyone noticed them.

More than once, Damian caught himself watching her.

She handled pressure with calm confidence.

She made difficult tasks look effortless.

An Unexpected Announcement

Just as dinner was about to be served, the master of ceremonies stepped onto the stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen…”

“We have a special guest this evening.”

The ballroom doors opened.

Victoria Harrington entered wearing a stunning silver gown.

Every camera immediately turned toward her.

She smiled confidently as she walked across the room.

Lily felt a knot form in her stomach.

Victoria took the microphone.

“Good evening, everyone.”

“I won’t keep you long.”

She looked directly at Damian.

“Many of you know Damian and I have shared a long history.”

The room became very quiet.

“I came here tonight because I believe some misunderstandings should be cleared up.”

Reporters leaned forward eagerly.

Victoria smiled.

“I still love Damian Wayne.”

A wave of murmurs swept through the ballroom.

She continued before anyone could react.

“And I’m willing to fight for the man I want.”

Every eye turned toward Damian.

Then toward Lily.

Cameras flashed nonstop.

Lily stood frozen.

She hadn’t expected something so personal to unfold at a charity event.

The atmosphere became tense.

Damian slowly walked onto the stage.

He took the microphone from Victoria.

His expression was calm, but his voice carried authority.

“This evening is about raising money for people in need.”

He looked around the room.

“It is not the place for personal declarations.”

The audience fell silent.

He handed the microphone back to the host.

“The program will continue as planned.”

The orchestra resumed playing.

Conversations slowly returned.

But the whispers had only just begun.

Outside the Ballroom

Lily quietly stepped onto the balcony to catch her breath.

The cool night air helped calm her racing heart.

She stared at the city lights below.

“You always disappear when things become overwhelming.”

She turned.

Damian stood beside her.

“I didn’t want to cause a scene.”

“You didn’t.”

She looked down.

“I feel like everything around you is complicated.”

He gave a quiet, almost tired smile.

“It usually is.”

For a few moments, they stood in comfortable silence.

Then Damian spoke again.

“I owe you an apology.”

“For what?”

“For bringing you into this.”

Lily shook her head gently.

“You didn’t.”

“I’m here because I chose this job.”

“And because I believe in this company.”

Damian looked at her with quiet admiration.

Few people stood beside him when things became difficult.

Lily had.

Without hesitation.

Before he could say another word, his phone rang.

Marcus Reed’s name appeared on the screen.

Damian answered.

“Marcus?”

His expression changed instantly.

“What happened?”

Lily watched concern fill his face.

“I’ll be there immediately.”

He lowered the phone slowly.

“What is it?” Lily asked.

Damian’s voice was tight.

“My grandmother collapsed again.”

The warmth of the evening disappeared in an instant.

Without another word, Damian hurried toward the exit.

Lily followed close behind.

Neither of them noticed Victoria watching from inside the ballroom.

Her declaration hadn’t brought Damian back to her.

Instead…

He had walked away.

And the one person he hadn’t left behind…

Was Lily.

Victoria’s smile vanished.

She whispered to herself,

“If she won’t leave willingly…”

“I’ll make sure she has no choice.”
