Red and blue emergency lights flashed across the Wayne Corporation parking lot.

Police officers surrounded the captured kidnapper while detectives photographed the scene.

Lily sat in the back of an ambulance as a paramedic checked the bruises on her wrist.Full novel: Beneath His Walls — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“You were lucky,” the paramedic said gently.

“The bruising isn’t serious, but you should rest.”

Lily nodded absentmindedly.

Her hands were still trembling.

Every time she closed her eyes, she could still feel the stranger’s hand over her mouth.

She shivered.

A warm suit jacket was suddenly draped over her shoulders.

She looked up.

Damian.

“You’ll catch a cold.”

She gave him a small smile.

“You always worry.”

“I have a reason to.”

Their eyes met.

For a moment, the noise of the police officers faded into the background.

The Confession

Captain James Holloway approached, carrying the kidnapper’s phone in an evidence bag.

“The detectives have recovered all the messages.”

Damian stood.

“Anything useful?”

Captain Holloway nodded.

“More than useful.”

He handed over a printed report.

“There are weeks of conversations.”

“Payments.”

“Instructions.”

“And several messages signed only with the initials ‘V.H.'”

Marcus Reed joined them.

“The police have already started tracing the bank transfers.”

Lily listened quietly.

“So…”

“It really wasn’t my imagination.”

Damian turned to her.

“No.”

“You were being targeted.”

For the first time since everything had begun, Lily allowed herself to believe the truth.

She hadn’t been overreacting.

Someone had truly wanted to destroy her.

Victoria’s Panic

Across the city, Victoria paced through her penthouse apartment.

Her assistant rushed inside, breathing heavily.

“The police arrested one of the men.”

Victoria froze.

“What?”

“He didn’t escape.”

“They have his phone.”

For the first time in years…

Fear crossed Victoria’s face.

“No…”

She grabbed her handbag.

“We’re leaving.”

“Tonight.”

Her assistant looked confused.

“Leaving where?”

“Anywhere.”

“Before they come for me.”

The Judge’s Signature

The anonymous letters.

The edited photographs.

The financial transfers.

The messages.

The attempted kidnapping.

After carefully reviewing the file, the judge signed a document.

The lead detective looked at it before folding it into the case file.

“We now have a warrant for the arrest of Victoria Harrington.”

The investigation had officially become a criminal case.

Eleanor’s Smile

Later that afternoon, Damian visited his grandmother at St.

Victoria Hospital.

Eleanor looked much stronger than she had a few days before.

When Damian entered, she immediately noticed the exhaustion in his face.

“You haven’t been sleeping.”

He smiled faintly.

“I’ve been busy.”

She reached for his hand.

“No.”

“You’ve been worried.”

He didn’t deny it.

Eleanor studied him for a moment.

“Is it because of Lily?”

Damian looked away.

His silence answered the question.

Eleanor chuckled softly.

“I knew it.”

He sighed.

“Grandmother…”

“You love her.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

The words he had been avoiding suddenly felt impossible to ignore.

After a long silence…

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“I do.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with happy tears.

“I’ve waited a long time to hear you admit that.”

A Quiet Evening

That evening, Lily remained in the office finishing reports.

The building was almost empty.

She rubbed her bruised wrist absentmindedly.

A knock sounded at the door.

“Come in.”

Damian entered carrying two cups of hot chocolate instead of coffee.

“You remembered.”

“You said hot chocolate helps when you’re stressed.”

He handed her one of the cups.

She wrapped her hands around the warm mug.

“Thank you.”

For several moments, they sat in comfortable silence.

Finally, Damian spoke.

“Lily…”

She looked at him.

“I need to tell you something.”

Her heart began beating faster.

“What is it?”

He stood and slowly walked toward the window.

“For years…”

“I believed caring about someone made you weak.”

“I built walls around myself.”

“So no one could hurt me again.”

He turned to face her.

“Then you walked into my office carrying a notebook and a cup of coffee.”

A small smile appeared on Lily’s face.

“And somehow…”

“You changed everything.”

She stared at him, speechless.

Damian took a slow breath.

“I don’t know what happens after the investigation.”

“I don’t know what tomorrow looks like.”

“But I know one thing.”

He stepped closer.

“I’ve fallen in love with you.”

The room became perfectly silent.

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

She had imagined hearing those words countless times.

Yet now that they were real…

She couldn’t speak.

Damian gently reached for her hand.

“You don’t have to answer now.”

“I just couldn’t keep pretending anymore.”

A single tear rolled down Lily’s cheek.

She smiled through it.

“I thought…”

She whispered.

“I was the only one.”

Before Damian could respond—

Marcus burst through the office door.

“Damian!”

Both turned immediately.

Marcus was breathing heavily.

“They found Victoria’s apartment.”

“It was empty.”

Damian’s expression hardened.

“She’s gone.”

Marcus nodded grimly.

“And according to the police…”

“She may already be trying to leave the country.”

The confession that had changed everything would have to wait.

Because Victoria Harrington had disappeared.

And a desperate fugitive…

Was often at her most dangerous.
