Song Guantang: “…”

He had never personally taken care of anyone like this in his entire life.

And he had only said two words, and he believed his tone wasn’t harsh at all, not even cold.Full novel: Bestie Turns Foe? Marry the Villain, She Runs, I Run Too. — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Yet his little wife started shedding tears as soon as he spoke, as if he had been mistreating her.

“I wasn’t scolding you.”

Song Guantang sounded somewhat helpless, but more than that, he was indulgent.

He set the bowl aside, gently pressing his thumb against the corner of her eye to wipe away the tears that had welled up there.

“If you don’t want to eat, just sleep.”

Actually, Meng Tang hadn’t intended to cry, but when she was sick, her emotions were harder to control.

What surprised her was that Song Guantang, who was usually so forceful in everything he did, didn’t push her further. Instead, he gave in and went along with her wishes.

What a strange and unpredictable villain.

With red-rimmed eyes, Meng Tang retreated back under the covers.

Song Guantang tucked the edges of the blanket snugly around her, making sure she was properly covered.

Only her slightly tousled head peeked out from under the blanket. She blinked her almond-shaped eyes, which were still hazy with unshed tears, and looked at him.

“Aren’t you going to work yet?”

Song Guantang was a complete workaholic. The group held its routine morning meeting at seven every day, and he woke up at six.

Even during her college entrance exams, Meng Tang had never gotten up that early. Waking up early was impossible for her—absolutely impossible in this lifetime.

So, most of the time, when Meng Tang woke up, the spot beside her was already cold.

It was rare for her to wake up and find Song Guantang still at home, even staying by her side, instead of heading to the group.

Could it be… that Song Guantang had deliberately stayed behind to keep her company?

Meng Tang felt a slight flutter in her heart.

“I’m not going to…”

Before Song Guantang could finish, Assistant Zhou knocked on the door outside.

“Mr. Song, Chairman Song and the others have already arrived at the police station. Are you heading out now?”

Today was the agreed-upon day for transferring the shares.

The tiny flicker of emotion that had stirred in Meng Tang’s heart vanished instantly at those words.

She spoke considerately, “Go ahead and focus on your work. The servants are here at home, so everything will be fine.”

In truth, she was just being polite, trying to come across as a sensible and virtuous wife.

After all, it was impossible for Song Guantang to abandon his work for her.

The likelihood of that happening was about as high as a sudden, violent storm on a perfectly clear day—practically nonexistent.

Sure enough, Song Guantang stood up and turned to instruct the servant, “Keep an eye on the saline drip. Once it’s finished, take her temperature again.”

“Yes, sir.”

After giving his instructions, Song Guantang lowered his head again, as if he wanted to say something more to Meng Tang.

But Meng Tang turned away first, presenting the back of her head to him.

If he was leaving, he should just go. Why pretend to be considerate? She didn’t need his fake concern. As long as the money was paid, she didn’t care about any of this.

A soft sigh seemed to echo behind her, followed by the sound of footsteps gradually fading away.

When Meng Tang slowly turned back, only the attendant servant remained in the bedroom. Song Guantang was already gone.

A faint ache lingered in her chest.

Just a tiny one.

She attributed it to the fact that the money hadn’t been paid yet. After all, her fever this time was all because of Song Guantang.

And all he had given her was a bowl of porridge. She wasn’t some “porridge girl”—all she wanted was money, cold, hard cash!

Who knows? Maybe the sound of money hitting her account would instantly make her bounce back to life, curing all her ailments.

Jerk.

Before drifting off into a heavy sleep, Meng Tang cursed under her breath.Song Guantang got into the car and glanced back at the villa twice more.

“Mr. Song, you have a site inspection at ten for the newly acquired land, a business negotiation at one in the afternoon, and a meeting scheduled at three…”

Assistant Zhou was still reporting the day’s work arrangements when he was coldly interrupted by Song Guantang.

“After transferring the shares this morning, postpone all other offline work for today until tomorrow or later. Change the meetings to online.”

Song Guantang glanced at his wristwatch. “Schedule the video conference to start at ten.”

Assistant Zhou’s shock was still evident on his face, and for a moment, he didn’t respond.

Song Guantang looked up at him. “Any problem?”

“No problem, I’ll arrange it right away.”

This was the first time Mr. Song had skipped a morning meeting—to take care of his wife.

And the first time he had postponed work until the next day… also for his wife, right?

Assistant Zhou thought uncertainly.

Meng Tang slept in a daze, having chaotic dreams.

She felt herself sweating, sticky and uncomfortable.

Then she sensed what seemed like a slightly cool hand resting on her forehead.

Her body was hot, so instinctively, she leaned toward that cool, jade-like temperature.

“The saline drip is finished. Have the doctor come in to remove the needle.”

Only when she heard that familiar, cool tone did Meng Tang groggily open her eyes.

When she saw the figure moving before her, she was completely stunned.

The hand covering her forehead belonged to Song Guantang.

He was sitting by the bed, close at hand. As she looked over, as if sensing she was awake, he glanced down at her.

“Awake? Still dizzy?”

Meng Tang was still a bit dazed. “You… didn’t you go to work? When did you come back? Is it already dark?”

In Meng Tang’s subconscious, she believed Song Guantang would only return home after finishing work, and that it must already be very late.

She glanced toward the window—bright sunshine—and the clock on the wall showed only nine-thirty.

Just then, the family doctor came in to remove Meng Tang’s needle. Song Guanting reached out again, covering her eyes as he had before.

After taking her temperature again, it had dropped, though still slightly higher than normal.

The family doctor said she was fine now and just needed to take some medicine.

After everyone had left, Song Guanting replied calmly, “I finished work, so naturally, I came back.”

Meng Tang belatedly realized that Song Guanting seemed to have specifically come back to stay with her.

She pursed her lips, thinking she shouldn’t smile, but the corners of her mouth couldn’t help but curl upward.

It seemed her sugar daddy wasn’t so cold and heartless after all. Besides being generous with money, he had some redeeming qualities.

“Drink the porridge.”

After her fever subsided, Meng Tang finally felt hungry. She sat up halfway and obediently drank the porridge.

“Mr. Song, it’s almost time.”

Just as Meng Tang finished the porridge, Assistant Zhou knocked on the door to remind him.

Song Guanting hummed in acknowledgment. “I’ll be in the study. Call me if you need anything.”

Meng Tang nodded like a little green onion, watching Song Guanting’s back disappear from sight before touching her chin in reflection.

So, Song Guanting had brought his work home?

A warm feeling flowed through her heart.

He did show a bit of consideration as a husband.

Even if he was just a plastic husband.

While Song Guanting was busy with work, Meng Tang, having sweated, wanted to take a bath. But the maid stopped her from washing up. “Madam, you’ve just recovered from a fever. If you take a bath right away, you might get a fever again. Sir would be unhappy if he found out. Please bear with it a little longer.”

At this moment, Meng Tang felt that having Song Guantang at home was truly annoying.

Always controlling her—this isn’t allowed, that isn’t permitted!

“If he agrees, then I can take a bath, right?”

Meng Tang threw off the covers, slipped on her slippers, and ran to the study.

“Husband, I’m all sweaty and sticky—it’s so uncomfortable. I really, really want to take a bath~”
