ROWAN “What else am I supposed to care about, Rowan?” Her words came through the phone without even a little bit of hesitation.
“What else?” she continued.
“Do you know how many times your father cheated on me?
Do you know how many times I forgave him?” “Why can’t you just be like me?” she asked.
“He cheated on you with just one person, and you are making such a big deal out of it.” I almost laughed.
Just one person?
Was she actually hearing herself?
You have to find a way in your heart to forgive him because I am not ready to let go of his money!” “He gives me anything I want, and I am enjoying every bit of that.
So you dare not spoil my fun.
Otherwise, I am going to make you regret ever thinking of leaving him in the first place.” I stared blankly at the wall in front of me.
Oh.
Wow.
So this was what we had become.
I was now being threatened because I made a decision about my own relationship.
A decision that was affecting my life.
And somehow, she was more worried about losing his money than she was about losing me.
“So, making my life miserable by not giving me love while I was little and caring about nothing but money, which eventually gave me an emotionally unavailable father, wasn’t enough?” My voice shook as I spoke.
“So you aren’t satisfied with that?
You also want to make my life miserable now that I am an adult by doing the same thing and caring about nothing but money?” She didn’t answer.
Of course she didn’t.
What was there to say?
I swallowed the lump in my throat and took another deep breath, trying to calm myself before I said something I would regret.
“Since you only care about the money and not about me or how I feel, why don’t I give you the go-ahead to give him to someone else?” There was silence.
“You definitely know someone you can link him with so they can get married.” I scoffed bitterly.
“With that, you can continue enjoying his richness for the rest of your life.” I paused.
“Or better still, you can just marry him yourself.” I couldn’t stop the sarcastic laugh that escaped my lips.
“I think that would be the best option.
That way, you would have direct access to all his money without having to go through anybody.” “Don’t you think that’s a good idea?” Still nothing.
I continued anyway.
“Never you dare speak to me about that bastard who took me for a fool again.” “As a matter of fact, never you dare call my number again.
The moment I end this call, I am blocking you.” “Speak directly to your future husband and get to know yourself.
And don’t worry, I promise I will attend the blessed union.” I rolled my eyes.
“Tados!” With that, I ended the call and immediately blacklisted her contact.
I stared at the screen for a few seconds before tossing my phone onto the bed.
A heavy sigh escaped my lips.
I felt exhausted both physically and emotionally..
It felt like everything and everyone around me was determined to make me feel like I was wrong for simply wanting to be loved properly.
I lay down on the bed and stared directly at the ceiling without blinking.
Why was my life like this?
Why did good things never seem to happen to me without something terrible following right behind them?
Every time something good wanted to enter my life, some bad news would suddenly appear from nowhere and completely overshadow it.
It was almost like I wasn’t allowed to be happy.
Was I cursed?
Had I offended someone in my past life?
Because honestly, what else was I supposed to think?
I felt my eyes burn as a few tears threatened to fall.
I quickly wiped them away with the back of my hand.
No.
I wasn’t going to cry again.
I had cried enough.
I took a deep breath and forced myself to sit up.
After a few seconds, I stood up and walked toward the door.
I opened it and stepped outside.
Kelvin wasn’t standing beside my bedroom door like he had been earlier.
I didn’t care where he was.
For all I cared, he could have left the house already.
I walked back into the living room and found him still on his knees, head bowed low.
Has he been kneeling here the whole time waiting for me?
I shoved the thought away the second it appeared.
I didn’t care.
“You should leave, Kelvin.
It’s getting late,” I said, even though it was nowhere near late.
I just wanted him gone.
He slowly raised his head.
His eyes were red, and his face looked tired from crying.
For a second, neither of us said anything.
Then he slowly pushed himself to his feet and He began walking toward me.
I didn’t step back.
I simply stood there, watching him as he came closer, wondering what the hell he was planning to say or do this time.
He finally reached me and without a word, he wrapped his arms around me.
He hugged me so tightly that I could barely breathe.
He started crying again and I stared at the wall in disbelief.
At this point, I couldn’t help but wonder if there was some kind of secret tank filled with water somewhere inside his body that allowed him to cry whenever he wanted.
Because how the hell was he still producing tears?
Wasn’t he tired?
I was tired just watching him.
“Please forgive me,” he pleaded again, his voice breaking.
“Please, Rowan.
Find a place in your heart to forgive me.
Please.” “I still love and would always love you.” He pulled back just enough to look at my face for a few seconds.
His eyes were still red, and his cheeks were wet from his tears.
“I know I hurt you,” he continued.
“And I know saying sorry won’t magically fix everything.
But please… just give me one chance to make things right.”
