21 – Speechless, why is she so easily provoked?
Sheng Baicheng now lay quietly in the special care unit of the intensive care ward.
He was breathing, but his eyes remained tightly shut.
His body was connected to various tubes for treatment and life support.
Sheng Xingyang visited him every week, but each visit left her heart aching a little more.
Perhaps as the closest blood relative she had in this world, her inability to save him immediately, forced to watch him lie there like this, was a pain no one else could truly understand.
After bringing Fu Siyan inside, Sheng Xingyang first went to the suite’s bathroom to fill a basin with warm water.
She placed a clean towel inside.
Letting it soak for a moment, she then wrung it out and began gently wiping Sheng Baicheng’s face and hands.
Fu Siyan watched the young man on the bed intently, his dark eyes unmoving.
Sheng Baicheng’s features truly resembled Sheng Xingyang’s, but as a comatose patient, deprived of sunlight for years, his skin was unnaturally pale for a man.
Like a sheet of white paper.
Looking closely, one could even see the fine, downy hairs on his skin.
“If my brother hadn’t had that accident, he’d be a freshman in law school now, with a bright future ahead—destined for the courts or to become a lawyer,” Sheng Xingyang said softly, having finished carefully wiping his hands, turning to Fu Siyan.
Listening, Fu Siyan felt he could resonate with the ache and sorrow in Sheng Xingyang’s heart.
To have your closest kin lying there like a corpse.
Anyone would be crushed.
“Don’t worry, sister. Miracles might happen,” Fu Siyan said gently, reaching out to lightly pat her shoulder.
Sheng Xingyang nodded. For now, hoping for a miracle was all she could do.
Because given the current state of medical science.
Easily treating comatose patients—remained a medical challenge.
Sheng Xingyang placed the towel back in the basin and said, “Actually, the reason I agreed to bring you to see my brother today was also to let you know about these two burdens I carry.” Aside from raising a baby with an unknown father, she also had this comatose brother to care for.
So, to put it bluntly.
Sheng Xingyang still didn’t fully trust him.
Fu Siyan understood this in his heart, but he didn’t blame her. The two ‘burdens’ she spoke of might indeed be too much for an ordinary person to bear.
Not to mention raising Xiao Yu’er, just the daily medical expenses for Sheng Baicheng’s hospitalization ranged from thousands to tens of thousands.
An ordinary person truly couldn’t manage it, but he was different. He had more money than they could spend in several lifetimes; taking care of both of them would be effortless.
No real obstacles.
“Sister, you don’t need to hint at anything. I understand.”
Sheng Xingyang hummed in acknowledgment and didn’t say more, continuing to wipe Sheng Baicheng’s body.
After all, she had said what needed to be said. If he was willing to give it a try, then so be it. If not, she wouldn’t force him. They could part amicably when the time came.
Fu Siyan glanced at her and said quietly, “Sister, I’m going out to make a call.”
Sheng Xingyang: “Alright, go ahead.”
Fu Siyan took out his phone and walked out of the ward. In the white corridor filled with the scent of disinfectant, he scrolled through his contact list.
He tapped on a name labeled 【Yan Chenyue】.
And dialed.
Within a minute of the call connecting, Yan Chenyue’s clear voice came through: “What’s up?”
Fu Siyan lowered his gaze: “Yeah. I heard your latest medical research results are about to be published. Can you help me save someone?”
“He’s been in a vegetative state for three years.”
Upon hearing this, Yan Chenyue fell silent for a second on the other end of the phone before letting out a low chuckle the next moment. “For Young Master Fu to ask me for help, this person must be really important?”
“Yes, more important than my life,” Fu Siyan admitted earnestly. “Will you help? Can you wake him up?”
“Male or female?” Yan Chenyue asked, gripping his phone.
Fu Siyan replied, “A boy, about my age.”
Yan Chenyue teased, “You’re interested in men?”
Fu Siyan: “…”
“No, he’s her younger brother. So, help me wake him up, and you can name any condition.”
Yan Chenyue understood, a slight smile curling his lips. “I can’t guarantee a hundred percent success because there’s still some risk with this research, but… since you asked, I’ll do my best to help.”
Fu Siyan breathed a sigh of relief. “Good, thanks.”
Yan Chenyue waved off his gratitude. “I want your Wind Shadow. Is that okay?”
He had been eyeing that one-of-a-kind limited edition sports car for a long time. The guy had always treated it like a girlfriend—no one was allowed to touch or drive it. He wanted to see if Fu Siyan would give it up.
Fu Siyan raised an eyebrow. This guy really knew how to take advantage of the situation. “You want it? Then take it, but only on the condition that you wake him up.”
This time, Yan Chenyue was surprised. Such a treasured car, given away just like that? It seemed that girl really meant a lot to him—more than his beloved car.
“Deal. I’ll return to the country next month,” Yan Chenyue said. “The research results will be refined by then.”
Fu Siyan nodded. “Alright.”
He could wait a month.
After their conversation, Fu Siyan felt completely at ease and slipped his phone into his pocket. As long as Sheng Baicheng woke up, his sister should be able to relax and let go of her worries.
Returning to the intensive care unit, he found Sheng Xingyang washing Sheng Baicheng’s soiled hospital gowns in the attached bathroom. Although the hospital provided nursing staff, no one could care for him as well as she could.
Fu Siyan gently pushed the door open and saw her bent over the sink, scrubbing the gowns. He paused for a moment before walking over and softly taking her slender wrist in his hand. “Sister, leave the laundry to the nursing staff. A girl’s hands shouldn’t get wet—it can make the skin wrinkle.”
Sheng Xingyang wasn’t that delicate or fussy, but his concern touched her deeply. “It’s fine. I want to wash his clothes myself.”
She tried to gently pull her hand back, but Fu Siyan wouldn’t let go—or rather, he couldn’t bear to. “Sister, I just… talked to a friend of mine who’s a doctor about your brother’s condition.”
Sheng Xingyang blinked at him, somewhat incredulous at how quickly he had acted. She had thought he was just saying nice things to comfort her, but he had actually gone outside to seek help from a friend?
“What… did he say?”
Fu Siyan looked down, his gaze gentle. “He said he happens to have research related to comatose patients and will return next month.”
Sheng Xingyang was taken aback, a flicker of hope shining in her eyes. “Really?”
“If you don’t believe me, I’ll bring him here next month,” Fu Siyan assured her. “He’s a professor at an internationally top-tier medical school—the youngest surgical professor in the world.”
He was also a childhood friend of his and wouldn’t lie to him.
“Sister, I wouldn’t joke about something as serious as a patient’s condition.”
Sheng Xingyang bit her lip, her eyes shimmering even more than before. After a moment of silence, she nodded. “Okay, thank you.”
“Then listen now, don’t wash, I’ll do it.” After saying this, Fu Siyan pulled her to the side of the sink and turned on the water.
He placed her fair fingers under the running water.
Patiently and meticulously rinsing away the laundry detergent foam from her palms and the backs of her hands.
“A girl’s hands are precious, they look best when fair and tender.” Fu Siyan carefully cleaned her fingers and said softly, “Don’t do household chores anymore.”
“I’ll take care of it.”
He spoke earnestly, and Sheng Xingyang gazed at him intently. The slight ripple in her heart, under his intense presence and gentle, breeze-like concern, gradually began to sway like a half-filled cup of water…
He seemed… indeed better than she had thought.
And he knew how to stir a woman’s heart.
“Actually… it’s fine.” Sheng Xingyang snapped back to reality, suppressing the surging flutter in her heart, and whispered softly.
But Fu Siyan didn’t care—he simply couldn’t bear to see her doing chores. He boldly pinched her soft earlobe, leaned in close, and murmured magnetically by her ear, “Be good, okay?”
He was warm, his breath fresh and scorching, mixed with that leg-weakening “be good.” No woman could resist it.
Including Sheng Xingyang herself. Her face flushed slightly, and fearing she might lose her composure, she quickly pulled her hand free and hurried out of the bathroom.
Only when she reached her brother’s bedside and saw his peacefully sleeping face did she calm down a little.
But as she gently touched her flushed cheek, it still felt warm. How ridiculous—why was she so easily swayed?
And by a man younger than her, no less?
No, she couldn’t let herself be so easily affected.
She still wasn’t sure whether he was just playing around or…
She couldn’t let herself fall first.
Sheng Xingyang composed herself for a moment, deciding not to overthink it, and continued tending to her brother.
