As the sun slowly rose behind the cemetery trees,

everything was silent.

But inside her, there was a storm.

Şefika took the shovel.

“You have to dig,” she said.

“This path no longer belongs to your mother. It’s yours now.”

Zeynep nodded.

She began to dig with her fingers.

The wet, cool soil stuck to her palms,

filling the spaces under her nails.

With every scoop of earth,

another wall inside her seemed to crack.

An hour passed.

Finally, the sound of metal hitting stone was heard.

As Zeynep cleared more dirt,

a dark brown box with rusted iron corners appeared.

Its lid was chained shut.

Şefika knelt,

whispering the name of God under her breath.

Zeynep repeated the sacred words after her.

Then she placed the key in the lock.

“Bismillah…”

As the key turned,

a soft hissing sound escaped.

The lid creaked open.

The first thing she saw was a yellowed letter.

On it, in faded ink:

“Zeynep, read this when you’re grown.”

With trembling hands, she unfolded the paper:

> “My daughter,

I couldn’t be your mother.

But I never removed you from my heart.

I don’t want you to blame me.

Because if I had stayed by your side,

I might not be alive today.”

> “I didn’t run from life.

Or from my sins...

I just wanted to live for you.

But the world I lived in would have either destroyed me…

Or you.”

Zeynep’s hands shook.

She turned the page:

> “You were always in my prayers.

Maybe you didn’t grow up beside me,

but in every prostration, I entrusted you to God.”

> “I brought you into this world,

but I left you in God’s care to protect you in it.”

Tears rolled down Zeynep’s cheeks.

Part of her felt shattered,

but another part—

for the first time today—

felt seen.

Inside the chest was a tiny baby shoe,

embroidered with a single letter:

“Z”

Then, a copy of the Qur’an…

A note tucked inside:

> “The day you read your first letter,

maybe I will come alive again in your heart.”

At the bottom of the chest, Zeynep found a small necklace.

Inside was a black-and-white ID photo of her mother.

She was smiling.

But in that smile were

a thousand regrets,

a thousand prayers,

and a thousand hopes.

Zeynep put the necklace around her neck.

She closed her eyes,

knelt,

and raised her hands to the sky:

“My God...

Make me content with my mother.

And make her forgiven to me…”

Şefika wiped her tears and turned away.

But she knew:

This was more than a prayer.

It was a lifetime of silence finally falling into prostration.

Just then,

a phone rang from the entrance of the cemetery.

Zeynep reached for her bag.

An unknown number on the screen.

“You’ll regret it if you don’t answer,”

Şefika whispered.

Zeynep picked up the phone:

“Hello?”

The voice on the other end

opened a new door in this story:

“Are you Fatıma’s daughter?”

Zeynep’s hand froze.
