Day 11 – The Man with the Flat Cap

Zeynep took a step back.

At this hour in the morning, in a cemetery,Full novel: BORN THROUGH THE DARKNESS — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

and in front of her mother’s grave—a stranger...

Her heart began to race.

The man took his hands out of his pockets,

interlocked his fingers as if in prayer.

“Don’t be afraid,” he said.

“I’m not looking for you.

But I came to speak about the person you’re looking for.”

Şefika stepped forward:

“What are you doing here, Yakup?”

Zeynep turned her head in surprise.

Yakup?

She was hearing this name for the first time.

The man bowed his head slightly,

and spoke in a tired, cracked voice:

“The time has come, Şefika.

There’s nowhere left to hide.”

Yakup sat down on one of the stone benches by the grave.

He placed his palms on his knees,

and lowered his head.

“Do you know Fatıma didn’t run away?”

he said without looking at Zeynep.

“She walked toward a destiny.”

Zeynep stepped closer, cautiously:

“What do you mean? Who was she running from?”

Yakup lifted his eyes.

“Not just the past.

She ran from the fire inside her.

But most of all… she hid to protect you.”

Memories clashed in Zeynep’s mind.

Dim alleys, unknown prayers,

and a childhood question that had gone unanswered for years:

> “Why was I abandoned?”

Yakup pulled out an old, crumpled photo from his pocket.

In it were a young woman and a man.

The woman was Fatıma.

And the man beside her…

Yakup.

“She ran away with me,” he said in a husky voice.

“But because of you, she had to return.

Because she had left you behind in the middle of the night.

And it killed her every night.”

Zeynep’s eyes widened.

“You… you were the man she loved?”

Yakup lowered his head.

“No.

I was the regret she never spoke of.”

Şefika interrupted:

“That’s enough, Yakup. Don’t drown this girl in the penance of the past.”

But Zeynep didn’t stop:

“Go on.

I want to know everything.”

Yakup pointed to the gravestone.

“Under that grave,

there is a chest.

Inside that chest is both your birth

and her disappearance.”

Zeynep’s knees trembled.

A chest under the ground?

Yakup pulled out a small key from his pocket.

“This was her will.

She said, ‘Give it to Zeynep when she’s ready.’

Now you are.”

He placed the key in Zeynep’s palm.

Then he stood up

and walked away silently.

As Zeynep stared at the key in her hand,

her heart beat in two different rhythms.

One was fear,

the other was hope.

Şefika bowed her head quietly:

“We’ll dig the earth,” she said.

“But first, dig out your courage.”

Zeynep turned her eyes to the grave.

Fatıma’s name was no longer a secret—

it was a door to secrets.

And tonight, that door would open.

To be continued…
