Day 21 – The Labyrinth of the Heart
Zeynep cast one last glance at Yusuf through the closing stones of the passage. The prayerful fear in his eyes solidified her decision:
"If I've come this far, I can't go back."
As the final stone fell into place, the passage was completely sealed. A dark silence descended. But this silence was no longer frightening. On the contrary, it was as if the noise within Zeynep had finally ceased. The outer world was closed off, but her inner world seemed to open for the first time.
She began to walk with cautious but determined steps. The passage twisted like a labyrinth. The walls were damp and cool, but on every turn, fragments of verses and old calligraphies were carved into the stone. Some were faded, some still glowed.
One caught her eye:
"Wa huwa ma'akum ayna ma kuntum."
(He is with you wherever you are.)
A warmth rose within Zeynep. She wasn't alone. Not even here, in the depths. This remembrance drew her in deeper.
Suddenly, the path split into two.
One side was narrow and lit, the other wide and dark. At the entrance of each path hung an old lantern; but only the lantern on the narrow path flickered with a weak light. The other was cloaked in pitch blackness, yet she could hear sweet whispers:
"Come... we know you... there's a place for you here..."
Zeynep paused. Her heart trembled again. Sometimes the dreams one sees in the dark are more alluring than what is seen in the light. But she took a breath. She placed her right hand over her heart. She closed her eyes.
"Ihdinas-siratal mustaqeem."
(Guide us to the straight path.)
And when she opened her eyes, she stepped onto the narrow, lit path.
Though the light dimmed as she went on, the writings on the walls became more distinct. This time, the words were not just read from the outside, but from within. It was as if each letter etched itself into her heart, whispering the pieces of the past she had never confronted.
She stopped by the edge of a wall. A sentence, drawn as if with charcoal, stood out:
"The heart is what you fill it with."
Seeing these words, Zeynep couldn’t untangle the knot in her throat. Love mixed with anger, compassion laced with jealousy, hope entangled with disappointment... They all flooded her heart at once. A few tears slipped from her eyes.
But this time, the tears didn’t feel heavy. They were cleansing, lightening.
Just then, the wall of the labyrinth began to crack.
As if another passage was opening from within. And this time, a voice came from beyond the door. A thin, familiar voice.
"Zeynep... do you remember me?"
She froze.
That voice... it was the one she used to hear in her dreams as a child, yet could never define. Sometimes it sounded like her mother, sometimes like herself... and sometimes like no one at all.
Zeynep took a step forward.
And…
