Day 24 – Footsteps

Zeynep’s heart fluttered like a bird in her chest. The footsteps coming from behind the door were heavy, deliberate. The person about to enter was either a truth from the past… or the final echo of an unending illusion.

Zeynep stepped back. She held the toy doll tightly in her hands. Her eyes were fixed on the door. The silhouette that entered was tall and slender. His face remained in the shadows, but the hesitation in his steps touched a feeling deep within her:

This was Yusuf.

Zeynep’s lips parted, and his name slipped out, almost in a whisper:

— Yusuf…?

The man paused. Then he slightly bowed his head. As his eyes adjusted to the light, Zeynep saw his face.

But this wasn’t Yusuf.

He looked very much like him, but older, with wearier eyes. A frown lined his brow, yet there was a familiar depth in his gaze.

— I’m Yusuf’s brother, said the man.

— My name is Sâlih. He wanted me to find you.

Zeynep’s knees gave way. She quietly sat down on the floor. She closed her eyes, then opened them again.

— Is Yusuf… alive?

Sâlih took a step forward. His old coat was covered in dust, his boots soaked. His voice trembled as he replied:

— Yes. But he’s far away. And he’s a very changed man now.

Zeynep took a breath. The exhaustion and hope of all those years suddenly weighed heavy on her shoulders.

Sâlih pulled an old handkerchief from his pocket. Wrapped inside was a small stone. On it, Arabic writing:

"He who comes with patience, stays with grace."

Zeynep shivered as she looked at the inscription.

— Is this Yusuf’s?

Sâlih nodded.

— He carried this stone for years. He wanted it to be given to you. But to find him, I first had to find you.

— But why now?

Sâlih stayed silent for a moment. Then he looked directly into Zeynep’s eyes.

— Because Yusuf had a dream. In it, he saw you walking in the dark, but holding a lantern. The flame was burning bright, but you didn’t notice it.

"He said, ‘If she sees the lantern, she’ll find me too.’"

Zeynep trembled. Her hand moved instinctively to her heart. That strange feeling that had enveloped her in recent days, that deep pulling sensation, that prayer burning through her chest…

Sâlih lowered his gaze.

— Now my task is done. I will show you the way. The rest is up to you.

Zeynep stood up. Still holding the stone, her eyes drifted to the notebook on the table. Yusuf’s handwriting was still there.

As if everything… was just beginning.

Sâlih turned toward the door.

— Be at the eastern gate tomorrow morning. A journey will begin. But be careful, Zeynep… This path is not walked with feet alone, but with the heart.

The door creaked again. As Sâlih left, he looked back one last time.

— And remember… Sometimes hope clings to a single name:

Allah.

The door closed. Zeynep sank to the floor with the stone in her hand.

Tears streamed down her face.

But for the first time…

Not from fear.

From hope.

To be continued…
