Day 6 – The Voice from Within the Chest
As Zeynep walked between the stone walls of the cellar, the echo of her footsteps felt like a breath coming to her from another time. The air was heavy, humid, but strangely familiar. It was as if she had been here before... or someone else’s memories had seeped into her.
When she reached the chest, her hands were trembling.
The inscription still gleamed:
“Let only those who carry hope open me.”
Zeynep closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
She whispered a prayer in her heart:
> “My Lord, the keys to the doors of truth are in Your hands.
Lead me only to goodness…”
She slowly lifted the lid of the chest.
And at that moment…
A sound was heard.
Strange, a deep whisper. Neither the wind nor a product of imagination.
A woman’s voice, drawing near to her ear, said:
“Don’t forget me.”
Zeynep wanted to step back, but her knees wouldn’t move.
The chest was not empty.
Inside…
There was a lacy notebook with burnt edges.
One word was written on it in black ink:
“Memoir.”
The moment Zeynep took the notebook in her hands, the whisper ceased.
As if it had been waiting for her touch.
She opened the first page:
Fatıma’s Diary – Page 1
March 13, 1945
“Today I saw him for the last time. Mehmed Sâbit…
His words burned my heart, but his eyes…
He looked at me like a verse from the Qur’an.
‘Even if we part, my heart will remain sealed within you,’ he said.
I stayed silent.
Because love is not something to speak of, but to carry with patience.
And sometimes the greatest hope is not even being able to make a sound.”
Zeynep pressed the notebook to her chest.
For the first time, she felt Fatıma’s emotions this closely.
Just then, a shadow appeared on the wall of the cellar.
There was someone in the darkness.
Zeynep froze.
And that person approached slowly.
An old woman in a pitch-black coat.
Her face wrinkled, her hands trembling… but her eyes were full of life.
The woman looked at Zeynep and said:
“Only you can read that notebook. Because you carry her blood.”
Zeynep’s eyes widened.
“What do you mean?”
The woman didn’t answer.
She only placed her hand on her heart, then withdrew into the darkness.
Zeynep wanted to run after her, but her feet felt nailed to the ground.
Now, all she could hear was her own heartbeat.
And in F
atıma’s notebook, dozens of pages awaited to be opened.
To be continued…
