Fear tightened Bai Zhou’s chest, making each breath feel heavy. He lifted his hand stiffly, hanging it midair as the atmosphere around them suddenly grew unnervingly quiet.
In Fu Linchen’s soundless silence, the light in his eyes dimmed little by little.
“You… What are you talking about? What task?”
His voice trembled, like he hoped desperately that he had misheard, that maybe what he imagined and what Fu Linchen meant were two different things.
But heaven clearly refused to grant him that mercy.
“Back in the Kitchen. The deep-blue little figure and the task.” Fu Linchen nestled into Bai Zhou’s neck, his voice quiet and soft.
All of Bai Zhou’s fragile hopes instantly shattered.
Weren’t other people’s systems all supposed to be invisible to everyone else? Why was his system not only visible but also touchable and even audible? Was it because they were both “data,” the kind who instantly recognized a fellow hometown soul?
Silence stretched again, suffocating. Fu Linchen’s heart ached faintly and he could only hug Bai Zhou tighter, as if he could find some sense of reality through the embrace.
“Was the puppy… also a task?” His voice rasped faintly, a hoarse, hesitant question.
“No.”
He didn’t know why but Bai Zhou’s voice was slightly choked too.
Fu Linchen let out a very soft laugh, brushing his breath against Bai Zhou’s ear. “Thank you.”
Bai Zhou lowered his eyes. His lashes, thin as cicada wings, trembled faintly. He didn’t respond to Fu Linchen’s gratitude.
The warm table lamp cast its glow on the vivid cake decorations, creating faint shadows across the white tablecloth.
“So that time before… it was a task too?” Fu Linchen never said it directly but Bai Zhou understood. And in silence, he acknowledged it.
Fu Linchen rose to his feet, reached out and rubbed gently over Bai Zhou’s bowed head. “You’ve worked so hard, Zhouzhou.”
Bai Zhou’s head snapped up in disbelief. He had done something wrong, what was there to praise?
“You’re… not angry?”
“Why should I be angry?” Fu Linchen’s voice remained gentle, as if he feared raising it even slightly would break the fragile dream surrounding them.
“I… I used you.” Bai Zhou’s voice grew smaller and smaller.
“That said, our Zhouzhou could be healthy only if he completes all tasks … So is Zhouzhou sick?” Fu Linchen’s tone was slow, steady, like a calming hand brushing down his heart.
Bai Zhou’s chest tightened with an indescribable ache. He didn’t understand why he felt that way.
It was like a child who had done something wrong, returned home expecting punishment, only to have someone gently ask if he had been wronged.
He lowered his head, thumb pressing anxiously into the flesh of his other hand, like he wanted to retreat from communication entirely.
But Fu Linchen showed no impatience whatsoever. Instead, he crouched down in front of Bai Zhou, lifting his head to meet the boy’s eyes from below.
“My Zhouzhou tries so hard just to stay alive. How could I ever be angry with you?”
He gently pried apart Bai Zhou’s fingers, placing the hand in his own warm palm. “You don’t belong to this world, do you?”
“…Mm.” Bai Zhou made a tiny noise in response within the warmth of his hand.
“I kept wondering just now… which one of us was fake. Because this whole thing makes no sense. But the moment you walked into the room, I suddenly felt like… what’s the point of thinking so hard?”
He placed Bai Zhou’s hand against his own chest. “Zhouzhou, I’m real.”
A strong, steady heartbeat pulsed against Bai Zhou’s palm, spreading through his fingertips, along his nerves and echoing in his own chest.
“And you’re real too.” Fu Linchen guided Bai Zhou’s hand back to his own chest. Feeling his heartbeat, Bai Zhou’s fingers curled inward instinctively, his body flinching back.
“Even if it had nothing to do with the task… you still came all the way here just to celebrate my birthday. My Zhouzhou is a very, very sincere treasure.”
Fu Linchen continued murmuring to him, like Bai Zhou was the one who’d been lied to all along.
His gentle voice wrapped around Bai Zhou’s unease, so warm that the boy didn’t even have the strength to run away. “What can I do to help you?”
Bai Zhou shook his head.
“Is it that there’s nothing I can help with… or that there are simply no more tasks here?”
Fu Linchen was impossibly perceptive; almost every time Bai Zhou fell silent, he could read the real answer hiding inside.
“Congratulations, Zhouzhou, you’re one step closer to being healthy.”
Despite saying that, his grip on Bai Zhou’s hand tightened unconsciously, his eyes turning slightly red.
“When you leave… Can you take the cup we made together?” The usually composed man lowered his head, quiet and pleading. “Even if it’s just a little souvenir from your travels… please bring it with you.”
Take that ugly cup.
So that when Bai Zhou saw it, he would think of him, even if only for a heartbeat.
His greed urged him to find any means necessary to keep the boy here, to trap him. He had even mapped out exactly what he could do.
But reason whispered that he must not become chains on Bai Zhou’s path. His feelings were insignificant compared to the boy’s health.
And yet… he still wanted to leave a trace in Bai Zhou’s journey. Something small but proof he existed.
Bai Zhou tightened his hold on Fu Linchen’s hand. “Okay.”
“You promise?”
Fu Linchen looked at him with a stubborn intensity, almost childlike.
Bai Zhou pressed his lips together, then reached out his hand on his own. “Let’s pinky swear.”
The boy’s pale fingertip extended toward him, just like that night in the storm, when Fu Linchen whispered a promise to a sleeping youth.
Fu Linchen hooked his pinky around Bai Zhou’s, tugged lightly and his low, hoarse voice murmured, “A hundred years without breaking it?”
Bai Zhou gave a serious answer. “A hundred years without breaking.”
Fu Linchen smiled, eyes curved with soft warmth. “Right. A hundred years without breaking.”
Their pinkies hooked, thumbs pressed together.
He would love Zhouzhou for a hundred years.
“I know your time is precious…” Fu Linchen paused, as if steadying the sour ache in his throat, then continued. “But I still want to ask… can you give me a little more of it?”
“Zhouzhou, leave after winter.”
Under his gentle voice and trembling eyes, Bai Zhou had nowhere to escape.
The lack of control made his heart twist. He leaned forward abruptly, burying himself in Fu Linchen’s arms, hiding his expression deep in the man’s chest.
Fu Linchen held him carefully, stroking his back. Under the cold white light, their overlapping silhouettes looked fragile and small.
“The winter in the capital is beautiful. We can go skiing, build snowmen, travel, see the snow mountains…”
He was desperate to come up with anything that might convince the boy to stay. But his voice grew softer.
Because none of the things he listed held true meaning for Bai Zhou. All the wealth and status he had in this world were utterly insignificant in the journey of someone who didn’t belong here.
He had watched countless romance sci-fi films, brushing off the tragedies of parallel worlds as mere dramatic fantasy.
He didn’t know until now that when this happened to him, it felt helpless. Sour. Crushing.
His eyes reddened. He rested his chin on Bai Zhou’s head, voice trembling as he repeated, “Leave after winter.”
Bai Zhou said nothing, only tightened his arms around Fu Linchen.
Just as he was about to speak, a sudden system notification pulled him back to reality.
【Final task: Confess to the protagonist shou. After being rejected, return alone to the countryside.】
【Detected abnormal data fluctuation. Final task parameters changed. Completion or failure will trigger forced logout.】
【Clearing abnormal data…】
【Clearance complete.】
Fu Linchen’s arm relaxed around him. Confusion flickered through his eyes for a moment, then quickly vanished like nothing had happened.
“I’ll take good care of it,” he said.
Bai Zhou released him, staring at the wood-carved puppy in Fu Linchen’s hand, the man’s face full of unbounded joy, as if everything just now had been nothing but Bai Zhou’s fantasy.
Just a piece of removable error data.
His one-sided affection looked so laughable.
Bai Zhou’s expression was still. “I’ll take good care of it too.”
“Take care of what?” Fu Linchen froze, confused.
Bai Zhou shook his head. “Nothing. Let’s eat the cake.”
Fu Linchen carefully lifted the tiny dinosaur and puppy from the top of the cake and placed them in the freezer, then cut up the rest.
The sweet cream melted in his mouth yet Bai Zhou tasted nothing.
He’d gotten too attached. He knew better than anyone that everything before him was fake and yet he still wavered.
His lashes lowered. Emotions churned in his chest, then quietly settled into stillness, as if nothing had happened.
No one here would be angry at him. No one minded being used. Because there was no one here except him in the first place.
Fu Linchen sensed something was wrong with his mood. “What’s wrong? Do you feel unwell?”
“No… just a little tired.”
“Then why don’t you stay here tonight?” Fu Linchen held a fork, trying to sound casual but the hope in his eyes betrayed him.
“Okay.”
Bai Zhou agreed without hesitation.
The final task seemed simple yet it created two impossible problems.
If he confessed to Chi Shuyi now, Chi wouldn’t reject him. He’d probably drag him straight to the marriage registry.
And after confessing… could he really go back to the countryside alone?
Therefore, he needed someone who would have to reject him. Someone he could force into refusal.
And who else was more suitable than Fu Linchen?
As for the forced logout… Bai Zhou didn’t know whether the task setter was careless or had done it on purpose.
It was practically a bug visible to the naked eye.
The forced-logout trigger required the mission to be completed. If Bai Zhou didn’t want to leave, he could simply choose never to finish it, let the mission hover forever in that state where it was neither completed nor failed.
Rather than urging him to leave, it felt more like giving him a layer of protection.
Humans would die eventually. When the day came, whether it was Chi Shuyi or any of them who died first, the mission would naturally shift back into a failed state.
At that time, no matter whether Bai Zhou died by accident or chose to die for love and never return to reality, the system would forcibly log him out.
But Bai Zhou no longer wished to stay.
Fu Linchen’s eyes lit up, the corners of his lips rising uncontrollably.
“Bai Zhou, I…”
“Let’s be together,” Bai Zhou raised his head and cut off Fu Linchen’s excited stammering. A faint smile lifted his delicate lips, so beautiful it made Fu Linchen dizzy.
Fu Linchen felt like he must be dreaming. How could such a huge blessing drop directly on his head? Could it be that his birthday wish from earlier had really been answered?
Oh great Cake Fairy, he would definitely offer annual tribute candles from now on.
His overjoyed brain went blank for quite a while. Then he suddenly jumped up from his chair, so abruptly that the chair leg screeched against the floor.
“Bai Zhou, you, you really like me?”
Bai Zhou didn’t answer. He simply stepped forward and, just like that night, leaned up and kissed him first.
The sweet, sticky cream melted between their lips, spreading warmth throughout Fu Linchen’s entire body. His body tensed and in the end he failed to restrain himself, closing his eyes completely as he sank into the softness of that affection.
Arms tightened around him, pressing their bodies seamlessly together.
The man holding the boy quickly seized control, one hand cupping the back of Bai Zhou’s head, the other gripping his slender waist as he deepened the kiss. Compared to Bai Zhou’s gentle touch,
Fu Linchen kissed like he was devouring him, rough, hungry, without the slightest restraint, barely giving the boy a chance to breathe.
Bai Zhou struggled lightly and turned his face away to gasp for air but the next second the man gripped his chin firmly, forcing him back to continue enduring the storm-like assault.
His tongue was repeatedly chased down, his soft lips endlessly tasted. Tableware clattered to the floor as Fu Linchen swept everything aside, pinning Bai Zhou onto the dining table and tilting up his chin.
The boy’s muffled whimpers and shaky breaths were all captured by the man without mercy.
Outside the window, the humid night gave way to a fine drizzle, rain tapping steadily against the glass, sending gentle ripples into the air.
Later, Bai Zhou lay face-down on the bed, enduring the man’s obsessive kisses trailing up his nape. His skin, flushed from heat, bloomed with tiny marks, light, dense traces of affection. From his fingertips to the center of his back, not a spot escaped the man’s craving touch.
“Zhouzhou…”
The man’s voice was hoarse as he whispered his name, his movements harsh yet one hand still stroked Bai Zhou’s face as if soothing his trembling body. “Don’t be afraid. I won’t go inside.”
Bai Zhou’s beautiful face was tinted a deep, lingering red. His eyes brimmed with tears. He had no strength left yet stubbornly turned his face away.
In his heart, he silently cheered himself on. Everything was for the mission.
He buried his face in the pillow, letting out a faint, suppressed hum.
Receiving no response, the man’s gaze darkened. He flipped Bai Zhou over, giving him no chance to evade.
Hovering over the boy’s chest, he helped himself liberally; worse, he insisted on Bai Zhou holding him while doing so. When Bai Zhou didn’t move, he moved for him.
Bai Zhou dazedly wrapped his arms around the man’s head, looking as if he were offering himself up to be loved.
For once, Bai Zhou’s sluggish mind stirred. At this moment, it didn’t feel like he was the one using Fu Linchen. It felt more like Fu Linchen was the one using him, completely.
But soon, he lost the ability to think altogether. The man’s large hands dragged him deeper into the whirlpool of desire.
By the time dawn arrived, Bai Zhou was asleep in the man’s broad arms, the bedroom an absolute mess.
Fu Linchen traced the boy’s cheek with a fingertip, as if engraving the moment into his memory forever.
[He won’t stay.]
In the pale golden morning light, the system’s electronic voice intruded abruptly, cold, stiff, like an unwelcome outsider.
The previous so-called “abnormal data clearance” had been nothing but a lie meant to fool him.
Fu Linchen responded in his mind, almost certain: [You did it on purpose.]
On purpose to let him hear. On purpose to let him see.
He tightened his arms around the boy, his gaze sinking into unfathomable depths.
He had never told the boy that, back in the kitchen, he had not only overheard their conversation, he had also seen the deep-blue humanoid figure standing behind the boy, out of Bai Zhou’s sight, casting a smile at him… one that was almost a taunt.
Fu Linchen’s lips curled, dripping with mockery. [What? I made you feel a sense of crisis? Is that why you jumped out so desperately, to prove something to me? Yet all you managed to do was break even further, because he wavered for my sake.]
The system’s electronic voice stiffened, completely emotionless: [He’s always soft-hearted.]
Fu Linchen replied coldly: [Do you really think Zhouzhou is someone who would waver just because he feels soft-hearted? You underestimate him far too much.]
System: […To him, you are merely data. Don’t be so confident.]
Fu Linchen let out a short laugh. [If I’m data, then what are you? A sewer rat drooling in the dark? Or a slimy parasite lurking in the drain?]
He continued: [You couldn’t even celebrate his birthday in front of him, only hidden away in corners. When the day comes that Zhouzhou completes his missions and returns to his own world, tell me, who will he remember? You, who can’t even maintain a full human form or me, the boyfriend he personally acknowledged?]
System: [Shut up! That was only for the mission!]
Its voice fluctuated wildly, as if it were sparking and short-circuiting. [I will take him away! I’ll accompany him through every world! You’ll be the one left behind forever!]
Fu Linchen lifted his gaze. There was nothing in front of him yet he stared forward as though locking eyes with the system’s phantom blue gaze.
[Is that so?]
System:
…
[Actually, I should thank you. You made me realize Zhouzhou cares about me, even if it was just a moment of emotion.]
System: [You’re imagining things. He doesn’t.]
Fu Linchen ignored the system’s stubbornness. He gently pulled up the quilt the boy had kicked away and tucked him in securely, then leaned over and kissed his forehead. [Just because I’m willing to be his stepping stone doesn’t mean you can order me around. As for you, I advise you to behave from now on. Stop scheming behind Zhouzhou’s back. Not every “him” will be as patient as I am. And if you ruin things, you will be the first one destroyed.]
The system stuttered: [You… What do you know?]
[Goodnight. Zhouzhou and I are sleeping.]
System:
…
The next morning,
“Zhouzhou, time to get up.”
A faint tickling sensation brushed his neck. Bai Zhou groaned, keeping his eyes shut, blindly reaching back and, ended up yanking the man up by his hair.
Fu Linchen, with his hair pulled, only smiled brightly at him.
Bai Zhou: …
Fu Linchen turned his head and kissed Bai Zhou’s fingertips. “Good morning, boyfriend.”
Bai Zhou’s hazy mind finally remembered what had happened the previous night. Thinking about how merciless the man had been, his face stiffened and he gave a small “mm.”
Fresh red marks still decorated his newly awakened face. His pink cheeks were soft, his milky-white neck dotted with bite marks, little “grass seeds” planted by the man.
Wearing a stiff expression while looking that soft only made Fu Linchen pounce, hugging him tightly and refusing to let go even afterward.
Bai Zhou turned on his phone. All the missed calls and messages were from one person, Fu Linyi.
Fu Linchen rested his chin on Bai Zhou’s shoulder. Seeing the messages, he chuckled softly.
His big hand slipped under Bai Zhou’s shirt. “Zhouzhou, be a good boy and call my little brother back.”
Bai Zhou grabbed the wandering hand out from under his clothes but the moment he pulled that one away, the man used his other hand to click on the missed-call number and dial back.
“Zhouzhou! Why has your phone been off all night?! Where are you?! I’ll go pick you up!”
Fu Linyi’s anxious voice echoed loudly from the speaker.
“Zhouzhou is with me,” Fu Linchen answered lazily beside Bai Zhou’s ear. “You don’t need to worry.”
Fu Linyi’s grip on his phone tightened. It’s exactly because he’s with you that I’m worried!
He hadn’t slept the entire night, his mind spinning in circles imagining what they might be doing. Call after call went unanswered, each one feeling like a silent omen.
Now hearing Fu Linchen’s voice, he felt a strange sense of “I knew it.”
He suddenly didn’t want to continue the call, as if something he really didn’t want to hear was coming.
But Fu Linchen didn’t give him the chance.
“We’re together now,” Fu Linchen said, lowering his head to kiss Bai Zhou’s cheek. “Right, Zhouzhou?”
The call was cut.
Fu Linchen stretched, satisfied, ready to go prepare breakfast, when Bai Zhou suddenly pulled him back.
“If we’re already doing this,” Bai Zhou said calmly, “we might as well do all of it.”
“What?” Fu Linchen blinked.
Bai Zhou found Chi Shuyi’s number and dialed.
It rang twice before being picked up.
“Zhouzhou? What’s wrong?” Chi Shuyi sounded like he was in a meeting, his voice low. Footsteps shuffled and only then did he speak warmly. “Are you coming home today?”
“I’m not going back.”
The other end fell silent, as though he didn’t quite process the boy’s words. But he still responded gently, “Then next week I’ll come pick you up. I can help pack your things, ”
“I… I’m with Fu Linchen now.” Bai Zhou blurted it out and before Chi Shuyi could react, he pushed out the rest in one breath:
“I won’t be going back anymore. My things, please help me pack them when the time comes. Just mail everything directly to Fu Linchen’s place. We…” Bai Zhou lifted his eyes and glanced at the silent Fu Linchen before finishing, “We’re getting married.”
“Zhouzhou, today isn’t April Fool’s Day.” Chi Shuyi’s voice lost all trace of humor. His deep tone swept across the speaker like a sudden gust of cold wind, making Bai Zhou instinctively shrink back, almost flinching.
Chi Shuyi held the phone, his gaze dark and sharp, each word squeezed out through clenched teeth. “So don’t joke like that.”
It wasn’t just Chi Shuyi whose thoughts were thrown off balance by Bai Zhou’s calm statement, Fu Linchen himself was frozen on the spot, staring blankly, as if his mind couldn’t process the two simple words “get married.”
When he sensed Bai Zhou’s gaze, he almost mechanically took the phone from him. His voice was flat, emotionless. “Yes. We’re together and we’re… getting married.”
He hung up like he was completing a routine task, as natural as breathing, without any intention of hiding or explaining, even though he had just dropped a bomb into someone else’s life.
“Zhouzhou, you…” Fu Linchen’s voice shook. He caught Bai Zhou’s hand and pressed it to his own face, gripping it almost desperately. “Is that true? Are you really willing to marry me? I’m not dreaming, am I?”
Before Bai Zhou could respond, Fu Linchen grabbed the boy’s wrist and used his hand to slap himself across the cheek, a harsh, ringing sound melting into a scorch of pain.
After the slap landed, he noticed the redness on Bai Zhou’s palm and immediately leaned over to blow on it, his worry nearly frantic.
Bai Zhou pulled his hand back and shielded Fu Linchen’s trembling eyes, turning his face aside as he muttered softly, barely above a whisper, “Mm… we’re getting married.”
