The frost on Jiang Wangyue’s body was actually receding, bit by bit, and what shocked them even more was that Yun Miao’s raging mental power seemed to have been soothed along with it.
“How is that possible?!” Feng Yan blurted. “This woman is just a C-grade waste, how could she possibly soothe an SS-grade like Yun Miao?!”
SS-grade, huh…
Something seemed to occur to Lan Xue, and he suddenly smiled. If it really was her, then it wasn’t out of the question.
He dropped to one knee, his pale, slender fingers brushing gently over her ashen face. I hope this time you’re truly awake.
With no idea what was happening outside, Jiang Wangyue was busy building a snowman in Yun Miao’s mental sea. The blizzard had just stopped out of nowhere, she couldn’t leave, and she didn’t know how to soothe anything, so she figured she might as well build a snowman.
She was extremely optimistic like that.
It was only while hunting for something to use as the eyes that she noticed something off. That crimson slowly spreading across the distant mountain peak, what was it? She found herself taking a few steps forward, narrowing her eyes to peer into the distance. As the red grew and grew, she actually felt a trace of warmth.
Strange, this wasn’t a sign she was about to freeze to death, was it?
In the blink of an eye, an entire snow-mountain was carpeted in red. Looking down at the specks of waxy red around her feet, a slightly crazy guess took shape in her mind.
Could this be snow algae?
Would the interstellar beast world even have an alga like this?
As if to confirm her suspicion, the red showed signs of spreading toward the surrounding peaks. Some of the snow had melted. Jiang Wangyue stared, transfixed, eyes full of astonishment.
Suddenly a cold, snow-flecked wind blasted into her face. She instinctively shut her eyes, and sank into darkness once more.
In the living room, the three of them stared in shock at Jiang Wangyue, now completely back to normal. What shocked them more was that Yun Miao had also shifted from beast form back to human.
Feng Yan gripped the blade in his hand, disbelief filling his eyes. “Jiang Wangyue…” She’d actually soothed an SS-grade Yun Miao!
“No! It’s not that!” He bent down and snatched up the two empty syringes off the floor, his face ugly. “It might just be the suppressant working.”
Lan Xue glanced at him, the emotion in his eyes hard to read.
“How could Jiang Wangyue possibly have an ability like that?!”
Barely back to consciousness, before she could even open her eyes, Jiang Wangyue heard Feng Yan’s words brimming with malice and disgust.
Jiang Wangyue: Hey now, what did I do? I didn’t do anything! Big bro, you sure didn’t have this attitude back when you were biting me!
Sensing she’d woken, Lan Xue shifted slightly to block Feng Yan behind him and said softly, “It’s a mess in here. Let me take the Female master to rest first.”
The ice formed from the mental power had vanished without leaving a single mark on her, even her clothes were dry. His words made her instinctively look around, and she couldn’t help clicking her tongue.
So this was the destructive force of a mental-power rampage? The whole house looked like it had been hit by a tornado.
Moving her gaze from the staircase snapped in half, she saw Yun Miao sprawled unconscious on the floor, and her heart clenched. “Is he… going to be okay?”
“He’s fine. He’s stabilized,” Lan Xue answered in a low voice. “He’ll come to after he rests a while.”
“Oh, oh. That’s good, then.”
She looked at the two empty syringes in Feng Yan’s grip, after what had just happened, she naturally assumed Yun Miao had calmed down because of the injection too. After all, as if she knew any mental soothing.
Jiang Wangyue followed Lan Xue into a room on the ground floor. She had no idea what this house was built from, the outside was in that state, yet the rooms inside were completely unscathed. She walked to the desk and picked up a very crudely hand-sewn snow-leopard plushie sitting on it.
A beat too late, she realized this seemed to be Lan Xue’s room. She glanced back on instinct and met his faintly smiling eyes.
A little embarrassed, she set the plushie down. “Sorry.”
“It’s nothing. Rest well, Female master. Leave the outside to me.”
“Okay.”
The closing door sealed off the two spaces. Lan Xue’s room had a large bay window, Jiang Wangyue drew the curtains and was surprised to find such a big open lot outside.
“It’d be a real shame not to grow vegetables here,” she murmured.
Wait. Something suddenly struck her.
A courtyard this big, plus a three-story detached villa, there was no way the original host, a kid fresh out of the military’s orphanage and barely an adult, could afford this! And if the original host hadn’t bought it, then it was the beast husbands.
Jiang Wangyue promptly shed tears of envy.
This soft-rice feast the original host hadn’t known how to enjoy, let her enjoy it instead! Outside the door, Lan Xue walked back to Yun Miao’s side, took a brand-new syringe from the spatial storage band on his wrist, and, under the silent gaze of Feng Yan and Ji Li, drew a tube of Yun Miao’s blood.
“I’ll go run the tests. Feng Yan, come with me. I’ll leave things here to you, Ji Li, I’ll remember to send you a copy of the results.”
At his commanding tone, Feng Yan clicked his tongue impatiently, but still followed. As for Ji Li, a man of few words as ever, he had no objection to Lan Xue’s arrangement.
The living room fell quiet again. Jiang Wangyue had fallen asleep. Curled up in the bay window against the fluffier, finer snow-leopard plushie, she slipped into a deep slumber.
This time she dreamed. In the dream she seemed to be in some sealed space, now and then people in white coats walked back and forth before her, yet they acted as if they couldn’t see her, never pausing at all. She wanted to reach out, to make a sound to catch their attention, but her hands and feet seemed bound, and when she tried to open her mouth no sound would come.
So strange.
She knit her brows, straining to wake, and when she turned her head, caught off guard, she saw a flash of white. Unlike the white coats those people wore, this white looked utterly pure.
“Jiang Wangyue…”
An airy voice came from above. She jolted awake, bolting upright, clutching her chest and panting hard. The sky outside had gone dark, things like stars flickering endlessly in the night. A long while later, she finally steadied her breathing.
There was still only her in the room, but the snow-leopard plushie had kept her company the whole time. Tugging at the leopard’s long tail, she rubbed her growling stomach and headed for the door.
Behind her, the plushie she’d set down, its once-dull eyes suddenly turned lively.
In the basement, still waiting on the test results, Lan Xue, in a spot where Feng Yan couldn’t see, quietly went red at the ears.
He really shouldn’t have…
