Marigold instantly paled when the strange fox man’s attention turned toward her.

She desperately shook her head.

“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Ren paused for a few seconds before finally saying, “The white fox you killed…Full novel: Court of Moonlight: Fated to Four Beast Kings — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

that was my spouse.” The statement caught both Marigold and her father off guard, but not Lily.

She had already known something was off the moment Marigold killed that extremely rare white fox.

“Well, I don’t really care whether she’s dead or not.

She was just an ungrateful runaway anyway,” Ren said arrogantly.

“But I can’t enter the Court of Moonlight alone.

That would be shameful, no?” “So…

I want a replacement.” Ren’s gaze settled on Marigold as he pointed at her with his free hand.

“Since you killed her, then you must come with me.” Blue flames flickered around Ren’s finger, and Marigold suddenly felt her body begin to move on its own, slowly pulling her toward the Fox Lord.

She looked at Ren in horror before screaming as loudly as she could.

“Daddy!

Daddy, save me!

Daddy, HELP!” BANG!

The loud sound of a musket firing filled the air, followed by a bullet shooting directly toward Ren’s head.

The Fox Lord raised a brow and slowly turned toward the bald old man who had just attacked him.

The bullet could not even touch his skin.

It stopped in midair before falling harmlessly to the ground.

“Filthy low species, do you really think you can harm me?” Ren then shifted his gaze toward the musket in Jack’s hands.

The weapon began to grow hotter with each passing second until Jack grunted in pain and threw it away.

A second later, the musket exploded on its own, sending shrapnel flying everywhere.

One of the pieces flew toward Marigold and grazed her cheek.

“Daddy!” Marigold shrieked in pain.

“M-Mari!” Jack grew desperate.

He had fired at the mythical fox creature out of reflex when his beloved daughter screamed for help, but now he finally realized that he was completely powerless against him.

Thus, in a desperate move, Jack quickly fell to his knees in front of the mythical creature and prostrated himself until his forehead hit the ground.

“B-benevolent master, please spare my daughter!

She is innocent!” Jack begged.

“Innocent?

She has stained her hands with my kin’s blood.

Even if that woman has no value to me, she is still my kin, no?

Blood should be paid with blood,” Ren stated.

“I-it wasn’t her intention!” Jack bluffed, desperately trying to save his daughter’s life.

“Someone told her to do it!” “Then tell me, who instructed her?” Ren asked.

Jack was about to say, I did.

He would do anything to save his only daughter, the jewel of his life.

Yet before he could open his mouth, he imagined all the cruel things this creature might do to him.

Would this mythical fox, akin to a demon, torture him with his strange powers until Jack wished for death?

Or would he enslave Jack until he was reduced to nothing but skin and bones?

The vivid images of such torture were too terrifying, and Jack felt his body tremble before he realized that he had begun pissing himself.

Met with nothing but silence, Ren demanded, “Speak, or I’ll leave with your daughter.” “Daddy!

I don’t want to die!” Marigold desperately cried.

“It’s her!” Jack suddenly shouted, pointing at Lily, who had remained silent the entire time while Ren gripped her nape.

Jack lifted his head and glared viciously at Lily.

“My daughter had only just learned how to hunt.

It was Lily who spotted the white fox and told my daughter to shoot it!

She said the fox was weak!” Seeing a way out, Marigold quickly added, “Y-yes!

I didn’t want to shoot a weak fox at first, but Lily told me that a white fox was very rare and that its fur could sell for a high price!

T-that’s why I shot it.

She forced me to do it!” “Is that true?” Ren asked gently as he stared at Lily, yet there was not the slightest trace of kindness in his eyes.

Lily was stunned.

She knew that Jack and Marigold did not see her as family.

Even after ten years of working herself to the bone in the barn and serving as their housekeeper, they had never treated her kindly.

Yet, she never expected them to be so treacherous that they would throw her away to save their own lives.

Faced with the fox man’s question, Lily wanted to tell him that it had all been Marigold’s doing and that she had nothing to do with it.

But then she remembered Gareth and how he had kept reminding her not to take anything from the forest.

The fox man had told her that Gareth’s scent was all over her.

Perhaps, his target had always been Gareth, and the white fox was merely an excuse to take a hostage and lure Gareth into the forest.

Lily looked at Marigold and recalled all the ridiculous things she had done in the past.

Marigold was spoiled rotten and cared for no one but herself.

If Gareth came to rescue her later, it was entirely possible that she would only drag him down instead.

At least, with herself as the hostage, Lily would be less of a burden than Marigold.

She was also more than prepared to sacrifice herself if she ever became a liability to Gareth.

She did not know if Gareth could even fight this fox man, but she knew that Gareth would come for her no matter what.

Thus, Lily took a deep breath to gather her courage and claimed, “I did it.

I killed the white fox.” Ren was bewildered.

Obviously, he knew that she was lying.

He had merely been playing along, hoping to see these humans turn against each other and fight like the filthy low species they were.

But he did not expect Gareth’s woman to lie just to protect those treacherous people.

The corners of his lips curled upward even further, while the fox ears on his head twitched with excitement.

Heh, what a foolish woman, he thought.

He wanted to see what kind of stupid decisions she would make next.

Perhaps she would entertain him throughout the dull event at the Court of Moonlight.

Besides, the West Wolf Pack had been missing their Alpha for months.

They would surely be indebted to the East Fox Clan once he lured Gareth back into their territory.

“Then, you have to accompany me to the court as my spouse,” Ren said with a cold smile.

He released his control over Marigold, and she immediately fell beside her kneeling father.

“This woman is mine now.

If that mutt, Gareth, comes looking for her, tell him to attend the Court of Moonlight, as he should.” Ren then carried Lily into his arms before flying back into the forest, disappearing into the darkness.
