Recently, the climate in Antarctica has been deteriorating rapidly. As an amateur turnip farmer, I have had to take notice of the immense impact this change has on the Antarctic farming industry, and indeed the global farming industry as a whole. What we can say for certain is that once this trend of climate deterioration becomes a reality, the tidal waves and tsunamis caused by melting glaciers will have an irreversible impact on global agriculture. This is a grave threat that every farmer must face. Therefore, on a personal level, I feel honor-bound to support the cause of environmental protection and climate improvement.
There have been many professional discussions and strategic suggestions regarding the advancement of this cause, and I welcome all of you to pay it your attention and support. But as this should be a matter of personal will and freedom, I will not make any calls to action here. As for this book, I must admit that I am rather fortunate. Because the seeds were sown relatively early, this season’s crop has not been significantly affected by the current weather. And regardless of how the climate may change in the future, this book will proceed according to its original plan—unless some greater force majeure causes me to permanently exit this industry, or this planet.
On this subject, I have also noticed that many turnip consumers have raised concerns about the relationship between product sales and future production. I sincerely thank you all for your support and concern, but I must also explain that such worries are unnecessary. I am different from the many excellent farmers you may be familiar with, because I am now—and expect to remain—a non-professional enthusiast. I believe that turning something into a profession to make a living greatly risks diminishing the joy of the activity itself. For that reason, I have decided to choose another, less interesting but stable, profession to support myself.
Based on this position, I can confidently announce to you all that the current climate change will have a minimal impact on this book. And if changes do occur in the future, they will be limited to replacing some equipment and farmland. There is no need for you to worry excessively about this farmer’s survival.
However, I must also admit that, looking at the development of the global farming industry, the situation for most practitioners is not the same as mine. This means the changes in climate will very likely cause widespread downsizing, bankruptcy, and career changes. Out of solidarity with my fellow farmers, I ought to provide what support and aid I can. This may cause one or two production delays or rescheduling, for which I must apologize to all you consumers. At the same time, I feel the need to justify why I continue to focus on my own work amidst this severe climatic trend, seemingly ignoring the calls of my peers.
To put it simply, ladies and gentlemen, I love to create. Without the free expression of imagination, the mortal world we inhabit becomes a heavy shackle. It has nothing to do with money or fame. Even in a deserted wilderness, one who wishes to sing will still sing. It is simply the nature of our kind. For me, on my busiest days, I can only carve out two or three hours to work on this book, and that has become the happiest part of my day. Without the support of this joy, I truly don’t know how I would continue to face the tedious and chaotic reality of life. And for the farming industry as a whole, I believe this kind of passion is also crucial. True, storms can gather without warning, but no matter how the times change, the consumption of food will always be a fundamental necessity. And no matter how barren the year, there is never a reason to let the fields lie fallow and wait for death. If the climate situation does not improve in the future, I will naturally find a way forward, be it pioneering a new path toward Atlantis or seeking a path to agricultural revolution from my own balcony, all to ensure my farming hobby can continue as usual.
In summary, to show solidarity with my peers, I plan to suspend operations for one day on the fifth of this month. The products scheduled for that day will be delivered one day in advance to ensure the interests of all you consumers are protected.
